Guest terrychris Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Dont you all think theres too many gay boards? Another has closed ,i wont post the link but a lot of abusive immaturity on it. Does it depend on what one is looking for? I do not like swearing or boards where posters are abusing each other. I enjoy trip reports, hotel reports etc. What do you look for in a forum? As far as I know there are perhaps 5 boards, although I must say I like the CFS board for sex reports,Sorry I have not posted the link. Are all board owners friendly towards each other? I like this board www.gaythailand.com www.sawatdee=gay=thailand.com www.gaybuttonthai.com www.gaytingtong.com Mods,if I cannot post the links I apologise please delete them. Quote
kokopelli Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 No, not too many forums. Each seem to serve its own niche and devotees. For me, I detest most of the juvenile posts on some other forums and further detest those posters who are known as "hydras" as well as the total phonys that exist only in cyberspace. Quote
Guest Jovianmoon Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I came to this board after lurking on it and a number of the others for some time, and found that this one is the only board that doesn't contain routine vitriolic abuse between members. Criticism, yes, and that's fine. But I have no use for a personal slagging match that goes nowhere. I did not join any of the other boards. Some enjoy slagging matches and boards with a different "flavour", and for them there are the other boards. So maybe, no, there aren't too many. Quote
williewillie Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 My problem with gaythailand.com is that so few threads are about gay Thailand. Of course we are more than just gay men but when I come to a forum called gayThailand, I think there should be topics and threads that are about gay Thailand. Obviously, most posters here do not agree. Only firecat regularly opens threads with gayThailand topics. Frankly, I find this forum bordering on a blog, dominated by a few active posters Quote
Guest Jovianmoon Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Those are fair points, williewillie. I have only recently become what you might call an 'active poster', but that can change - and I think it will change: my interest in all things Thailand tends to wax close to a trip over there, and wanes following that trip. So come late April/May this year I most likely won't be posting again for a while. I might check in to The Beer Bar from time to time, though. Now that you mention it, I would like to see more actual gay threads on this forum... I might start some of my own. Cheers. Quote
TotallyOz Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 One thing that I notice is that many people want to see and read gay threads but they don't want to post them. The best way to get those kinds of threads going on a regular basis is to start some. When I am in Thailand, I do start as many as I can about the places I visit and I wish others would as well. But, if you want to see something more actively discussed, it is as easy as Starting a New Topic. williewillie and kokopelli 2 Quote
Guest Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 One thing that I notice is that many people want to see and read gay threads but they don't want to post them.Very good advice. As for too many boards, well this is down to market forces. They all offer something different, so just participate in the ones you prefer. Quote
Guest timmberty Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 i find the boards get a bit boring after a short while. ive been posting here for a few months now and if it wasnt for 5 or 6 posters the board would be a picture of perfect whiteness. i dont mind the odd bit of slagging, ive posted a bit over on the bitchboard the last couple of days, but that board goes to far the other way, and is ruined by one or two posters we all know and care nowt about. this board is a little bit to straight laced, other than a couple of posters there never seems to be any homour on it. as for sgt and gg's board .. they have some intresting stuff, but far to many petty slanging matches, which now-a-days seem to be started by those who detest slanging !! Rogie Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Dont you all think theres too many gay boards? Personally no, not too many. I read several - not necessarily every day - but post mostly on this one. Frankly, I find this forum bordering on a blog, dominated by a few active posters A blog it is not, dear sir! A blogger holds the floor and says what he has to. He may allow his readers to make a comment, but in my experience a proper discussion isn't possible, at least not in the way it is on a Message Board such as this. I agree certain posters predominate, but IMO they don't dominate, although I suppose a person who doesn't hold any strong views of his own or, for reasons best known to himself, is reluctant to dive in and add his tuppence-worth of opinion might get that feeling. My guess is such a person, were he to take the plunge and 'dive in', would soon get to enjoy the experience, because, unless he was an out an out troll, he would be listened to with interest and consideration. He wouldn't be blasted out of the water, nobody here enjoys doing that, not even me! But, if you want to see something more actively discussed, it is as easy as Starting a New Topic. Well said, that man! i 1. this board is a little bit to straight laced, 2. other than a couple of posters there never seems to be any homour on it. 1. There are some 'earnest' discussions, certainly, but then again the topics that might be described in that way are the sort that attract serious debate. We have a number of very well-informed members contributing in this board, and it is only reasonable to expect that from time to time they may leave some of us (often me!) scratching our heads. If nothing else it's a good education . . . 2. Sorry, Timmberty, I cannot agree. TotallyOz 1 Quote
Guest timmberty Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 i did mean humour, only realised my latest mistake whilst i read your reply. i must admit i find the seriousness of the board a little to hard to take at times, but thats my fault and not any of yours of course. but as some say horses for courses, i shall read as i normally do and reply once in a while. maybe we have different types of humour rogie ? tho you where one of the ones i had down as a humourerererer. Quote
Rogie Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Timmberty, I read your post as humour (Brit) / humor (US) and that's what I responded to. I now see it could have been honour / honor. Humourerererer? Do you possess a stammer by any chance Timmberty? As for different types of humour, that's a minefield isn't it? it seems we can broadly generalise between nations, but within any one country there must be dozens of regional humours. Perhaps one could include 'in jokes' as a type of regional humour. An outsider will have difficulty getting the joke. Nothing worse than all around you guffawing (the legendary RoFL) and you're not. williewillie Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Sorry, I missed Michael when I wrote that firecat only starts gay threads. Michael does indeed start many when he is in Thailand but with fountainhall, tends to dominate the forum. Of course, it is an open forum and anyone can start a thread but there are times when it seems this forum takes on blog aspects with a majority of threads authored by fountainhall and michael. This is not criticism just how I see it. Agree with some of the above comments and there is a lack of humour and fun and threads can get very dry and have no relationship with anything gay (which is my basic point). Quote
Bob Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Out of curiosity, williewillie, what specific "gay" topics would you like discussed here? Information about the gay bars somewhere in Thailand, current off fees, or what? Quote
kokopelli Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 I have not been posting much about the gay life on this forum since so much of it is covered in some other forums but will try to do better. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Sorry, I missed Michael when I wrote that firecat only starts gay threads. Do you have me on ignore or what? I inject humor into everything (much to some's consternation). Most recently in the "Take Care" thread, Michael had this to say: TW: that post ranks at one of my all time favorite posts from any message board. Thank you for laughing so hard I almost broke my chair. What aspects of these threads resemble a blog, and what is wrong with having a few posters to get the ball rolling? Some people like Michael and FH are just more inclined to suggest topics than others. What's wrong with that? Are you saying you want Michael and Fountainhall to start fewer threads? Can you explain? As Bob pointed out, what topics do you want to discuss? It seems to me that if you want to suggest something, then just start a thread. I would love to read what you have to say and look forward to a constructive topic. I think you're a fine asset to this forum and hope you will consider this as an invitation to start your own new threads. I should be doing more, too. That is, of course-- once you take me off ignore so you can see them. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 have no relationship with anything gay (which is my basic point). I think that's a fair comment – but only to a certain extent. As Michael says, what is written in a Board is dependent 100% on its posters. If posters don’t wish to write posts similar to those found on cruising-for-sex, then you won’t find many here. Besides, sites like CFS have their own niche! Why bother making the same or similar posts here? As Rogie has pointed out, he reads various sites from time to time. I suspect many others do the same. Is there really a need to duplicate what is written elsewhere? Isn’t it better that each develops its own niche and its own style? It used to be the case that one or two posters occasionally posted exactly the same long posts on several Boards. Thankfully, that happens much less frequently now. In any case, surely the title ‘Gay’ does not necessarily imply the need always to discus the latest out-of-town massage place and the intimate detail of what constitutes “afters”? I noticed a very long recent discussion on Gaybutton’s Board on whether Chiang Mai could be called a gay destination. Some said the declining nightlife scene meant it could in no way be so described. Others added that nightlife is not what necessarily makes a gay destination. There are plenty of other places where young gay Thais hang out and that there is in any case so much for gay guys to see and do in and around Chiang Mai that of course it is a gay destination. So it’s surely horses for courses. If sex is primarily your thing, I’d agree this Board doesn’t quite fill the bill. If an overall experience of what Thailand has to offer, with a fair number of posts dealing with very specific gay matters, then I think this is the site for you. Yes, Michael and I make more posts here. I occasionally have posted elsewhere (Michael I think not). But I find this series of Boards is much more to my liking. And yes, as I have stated at the start of one or two posts, some – especially the travel ones (and I have posted a lot of these over time) – are more blog-type in nature. But unlike a blog, they are subject to comment, alternative views, criticism, what have you! I write them (i) because I enjoy writing them, and (ii) it seems some members also like to read them. If I was ever told they were boring and no-one did wish to read them, I’d stop at once. On the other hand, though, if you look through the titles of the threads that have been active only in the last 5 weeks or so, there is in fact a lot of gay content on this Board. Here’s a list loosely bracketed into 3 categories – Bar and Nightlife Scene Threads * Corner Bar Pattaya * Heart Beat Go Go and new Super A in BKK * Sunee Tonight * Boyz Boyz Boyz * Famous Soi VC Bar Looking to Hire Few Femmy Boys * Eros Bar in Sunee Plaza * Professionalism and conduct of Bar owners * Month-Long Drug Crackdown Starts at Sunee Plaza * What are Pattaya's Long-Term Prospects? * A New Perspective On Picking Companions * Street Trade in Bangkok * Getting Started: the basics * Soi Twilight Revisited * Boyz Boyz Boyz Club, Pattaya, Thailand * Tips for first time visitor to Sunee Plaza * Come In Bar in Sunee Plaza * Bar in Chiang Mai * Duc's Bar Sunee Plaza Pattaya General Gay Relevance Threads * Gay romeo.. and then it hit me ! * Songkran 2013 Bangkok G Circuit Parties * Thai Comments on Gay Romeo * Thais and "White Lies" * Tourist shot dead on Koh Phangan * Carrying Passport in Thailand * Should I pay his rent? * One Thai Infected with HIV Every Hour Accommodation and Travel likely to be of interest to Gay Readers * B&B recommendation in Pai * Special Lufthansa Fares BKK to Kuala Lumpur or Ho Chi Minh * Uncle John’s Italian Restaurant(s) in Bangkok * Don Mueng Airport to Pattaya * Cheap Flights BKK to Phnom Penh in February * A View from the Hilton Hotel in Pattaya * How to have cheap Day Trip while in Gay Thailand * Best Italian Restaurant In Pattaya? * Social Media in Gay Thailand * Bangkok Trip report * Does anyone know a reliable Taxi firm, Pattaya to BKK? * Restaurant at Ambiance Hotel in Boyztown: One of the best meals I have had in Thailand * Bangkok Cheap Accommodation * Babylon hotel - taxi * The Rose * Complimentary drinks and snack with Christmas presents at Magnolia Men/Gay Spa * Keeree Waree Seaside Villa & Spa Click on the Search button and there are hundreds more threads made in the last year. If these are not sufficient or detailed enough, what more do you wish to see? It really would help those of us who do tend to post more than others as we could then try and accommodate at least some of what you’d like to read about. Quote
williewillie Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 wow.. obviously there is a cadre of devoted posters here and somewhat thin skinned. I made it clear that my comments were not criticism and acknowledged the fact that the forum was open to all. Since the owner takes no positions or role, he leaves it to others to take the lead. Fountainhall is a natural leader but dry and conservative in his choices of topics. Not critcism, as some are interesting, just not gay... Michael is the other leader but sporatic and heavily posts/starts thread and then goes silent. Thaiworthy sense of humour not funny to me but hey, he tries. I would criticize TW as he does tend to brown nose and idolize a few of the heavy hitters, which can get tiresome. Man, I am impressed by the time and effort fountainhall puts into his responses. reminds me of beachlover somewhat. well, thats enough. Just remember this site is gayThailand Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 As Michael said above - "The best way to get those kinds of threads going on a regular basis is to start some." Anyone who is not happy with the threads and posts can easily start his own. Perhaps weewillie, having made a point, might start a few that are more what he wants to see on a gaythailand Board. obviously there is a cadre of devoted posters here and somewhat thin skinned Who is thin-skinned? You made a comment with which I did not agree and which I felt to be in part inaccurate. I responded with facts. What people expect of a gay destination may perhaps be at the root of weewillie's concerns. I don't know, but perhaps in addition to being mildly critical he might give us a list of some of the gay topics he would like to see here. I'll certainly be delighted to see it and hopefully contribute to some of them. Man, I am impressed by the time and effort fountainhall puts into his responses. reminds me of beachlover somewhat. That's a surprise! BL's posts were largely one- or two-liners - and no-one has ever pointed the finger of brevity at me before! I cannot recall many more than two BL posts that were of any length - reports of trips to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, which he posted on every Board of which he was then still permitted to be a member! Guest thaiworthy Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 If that wasn't criticism, willie, I'd hate to read something from you when you actually were being critical. I guess you can put me back on ignore now. And If I wasn't before, this would be a good time. As far as being thin-skinned, that's usually what posters say when they want to attack with impunity. And lastly, if getting brown-nosed is something you're really concerned about, rest assured, you will not be one of those among them. Quote
Guest Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Of course, it is an open forum and anyone can start a thread but there are times when it seems this forum takes on blog aspects with a majority of threads authored by fountainhall and michael. We have: 1 Many interesting threads started by Fountainhall and Michael. 2 A number of interesting threads started by other less active members. 3 Some boring or irrelevant threads, which quickly die out. 4 Some threads started by members with behavioural issues, which tend to get ignored. For examples: Members who are fakes or behave with no courtesy to others. If you would like more diverse sources of content, the way forward is for more members to start posting more content that fits category 2. Making implied criticism of the existing threads that interest other members and keep the forum alive will not help at all. Quote

But perhaps weewillie can tell us which of these threads he likes and which relate to gay thailand more than threads on this gaythailand board. Fountainhall is . . . dry and conservative in his choices of topics. Not critcism, as some are interesting, just not gay.. Thank you, but can you elaborate a bit more on this? Yes, I can indeed be 'dry' and I can indeed be 'conservative'. Guilty as charged! No discussion! But how can you possibly infer all my topics are not gay or gay related? Sorry weewillie; that is plain not true. In the last month alone, threads started by me and to which I contributed more than one post include reports on a visit to 2 Gogo bars in Bangkok, booking information for the G Circuit Songkran gay parties in Bangkok, local accommodation and travel tips, the drug crackdown in Pattaya bars, Pattaya's long-term prospects, Thais and White Lies, Thai Comments on gayromeo etc. . . I agree - most of these are not the sort of posts you will find on cruising for sex. But in all sincerity, specifically what sort of other gay and gay-related posts are you looking for? Quote
williewillie Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 FH, you have worn me down with all your research, fine detailing and exhaustive recaping. I don't think there is anything wrong with your threads or postings except they tend to run on and on. My point is and was that a gaythailand forum should be a GAY Thailand forum. I can go to thaivisa.com for much of what is posted here and of course I can go to cruisingforsex.com for the explcit sexual threads. I did not mean to insult thaiworthy. He is a sincere poster and an asset where he posts. Many posters brownnose the handful of thread starters/forum owners on all the gaythailand forums and it is harmless, just something akin to liking postings on facebook. Again not a bad thing but not very interesting,at least to me. I have been a fan of this forum from the moment heygay was banned and have been a frequent viewer and infrequent poster. I am surprised at the strong reaction to my comments and do not mean to insult anyone but only to express a viewpoint, which I have highlighed above. I almost forgot to add that my comment about beachlover resembling FH concerned the activity level and not the posting style and did not mean to infer that they were one and the same. God forbid Quote
Guest Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 One way to solve the "not gay enough" problem would be to start your own strictly gay forum and delete any threads that's don't qualify. Most of the existing forums would quite happily post links to a new site. Then we can leave it down to market forces to see what survives. And what doesn't. Quote

There aren't too many gay forums; they all serve a purpose - even the worst of them, and even if sometimes I can't for the life of me figure out why that sort of purpose is necessary in the first place. Would you rather have those hydras and trolls here? This forum could use a few more members starting threads, but the efforts of thaiworthy and Michael to start the ones they do isn't a bad thing at all. I'll make an effort to join in, too. I appreciate the overall tone here, myself. If someone wants "edgy" or "spirited and lively" forums there are a couple of them out there spewing on an hourly basis. My guess is that most here would prefer informative and conversational. williewillie, TotallyOz and kokopelli 3 Quote
