Guest scottishguy Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 OK, I'll start by recounting these genuine conversations: #1 TB: Where you come from? Me: Scotland TB: Oh Scotlan - same Englan Me: (sharp intake of breath) No, not same - different - but not far (note how I adapt my speech!) TB: Oh? I'm think very cold in Scotlan Me: Yes, very cold - I think you die if you go there (always best to get that in quickly). TB: In Scotlan you have snow? Me: Yes, lots of snow TB: I never see snow, never see this. TB: Next time you come Thailan you bring me snow from Scotlan? Me: Can not bring snow - it become naam because hot TB: But you can put it in a box, then it ok. #2 Scene: Boy comes over to table with band-aid on cheek. TB: How are you tomorrow Me: I'm very good, how are you. TB: Im ok. But too hot. Me: You have problem with your face? You cut face? TB: No - I have pain in teeth. Me: Why you have Band-Aid on cheek TB: It take pain out. Give us you best tales. Quote
NIrishGuy Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 Actually I've had almost the same word for word conversation re the snow thing ( minus the box part) but When i say "I'm from Ireland" I then get the added confused "oh you from Iceland, ohhh it very cold" - I used to think the boys then knew at least where Iceland was but I've now figured "oh it very cold there" is their standard reply to basically anywhere that isn't Thailand !! :/) Also re the bandaid on the cheek - perhaps that's not as mad as it sounds as again I have had a similar story happen except the guy had a headache and was wearing a BIG plaster on his forehead which I gently laughed at suggesting it wouldn't actually help a headache - only to find out afterwards that the pharmacies and doctors DO in fact give out band aids for exactly that ! And they are strips with painkillers built in that soak straight into the skin for immediate and targeted pain relief and they are now also sold here in the UK actually as well - so perhaps your Thai friend wasn't as ting tong as he looked after all !?? :-) Quote
Guest scottishguy Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 Well possibly - but that was about 12yrs ago and I really think it was an ordinary band-aid, but it amused me anyway - as much as when an Amsterdam boy saw some souvenir wooden, painted tulips lying in a bag on the table in my hotel room and advised me "you must put them in water or they will die" It's the way they are deadly serious when they say these things, that is so sweet and amusing.
