Some more happenings with Pattaya Players...

Road Trip To Bangkok...
We welcome you to join us on another one of our infamous Pattaya Players Road Trips to see Bangkok Community Theater's production of "Blithe Spirit."  BCT is a wonderful community theater organization that has been putting on fantastic shows for over 20 years!  In addition, the folks at BCT are a wonderful help and inspiration to all of us here at Pattaya Players!  We intend on renting a van and leaving Pattaya around 12:00 (noon) on Saturday, March 16th.  This should give us plenty of time to check in to the hotel, have a leisurely lunch and some pre-show cocktails before legging it over to the theater.  We will spend the night in a budget hotel within walking distance of the show and wake up Sunday morning for a little morning shopping at Chatuchak Market before returning home on the van.  We expect to return to Pattaya by early evening on March 17th.  Exact pricing may vary (depending on number of participants and rates at actual time of booking), however our project costs are...

1,200 Baht for Theater Ticket and Buffet Dinner (per person)
500 Baht for Van Rental - including tip for driver - (per person)
1,000 Baht for Hotel Room (based on two person occupancy)

FOR A GRAND TOTAL ESTIMATE OF:
2,200 Baht per person (Based on Double Occupancy)
2,700 Baht per person (Based on Single Occupancy)

Blithe Spirit, written by Noel Coward and directed by Mark Sobels, will be performed at The British Club in Bangkok. Blithe Spirit is a classic Coward comedy: while working on a novel about the occult, Charles Condomine decides to invite an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a séance at his house. When the ghost of Charles' first wife, Elvira, is inadvertently summoned, Charles second wife, Ruth, is not well pleased. Magic and mayhem follow as Elvira makes herself at home!  Noël Coward remains one of the most popular and entertaining writers in British history. Blithe Spirit was written in only five days during the Blitz in 1941, and when first produced in London, it broke the record for longest running non-musical British play. The play also did well on Broadway and was adapted for film in 1945. Since then, Blithe Spirit has seen countless revivals on both sides of the Atlantic as well as film and television productions.

If you are interested in joining us on this trip, please get back to me by Friday, February 1st with a final confirmation.  On February 2nd, I will re-confirm, send out final pricing and ask for payment by February 5th.  These dates are hard and fast -- so please plan accordingly!

Not being based in Pattaya, I have only been able to watch with interest the development of the Pattaya Players. I notice that most of the productions are what could be termed "lighter fare" - murder mysteries, pantomimes etc. and most take place in restaurants. I can understand that lack of proper facilities probably makes this inevitable - and I am not in any way criticising that. Indeed, a couple of decades ago I recall the famous British comic actor Derek Nimmo had a highly successful sideline of taking small cast full-length plays around the hotel dinner-theatre circuit in Asia and the Middle East. These were always packed.

Nimmo's repertoire was mostly reruns of popular West End plays or revivals, but similarly lighter fare. I just wonder if the Pattaya Players have any plans for more full-length, 'meaty' drama. Or will you stick to the tried and tested current format?

Hi Fountainhall.  Thanks for your post.  Much of what you say is true.  Lack of "real theaters", budget and varied talent limits us to putting on only one full length stage show per year.  This is always our June show and this year we will be producing "Divorce Sale" by Linda Stockham.  It will be held on June 14-15 in the main ballroom at Eastern Grand Palace Hotel.  We build a full stage and set for this once-a-year production and always have state-of-the-art professional sound and lighting to make it a true theater experience.  In the past, our June Productions have included such shows as "The Odd Couple" and "Rumors" by Neil Simon, "Play On" by Rick Abbot and "Loot" by Joe Orton.

Now, the common thread in all of these is that they are comedies.  The simple reason for this is that our audience doesn't seem to enjoy more serious dramas or shakesperean fare.  We have tried some of these with little to no turn out and all the surveys we put out indicate that people want to laugh.  I think it is just part of the Pattaya ethos.

That's our reasoning and so far our experience.  It doesn't mean it is one-hundred percent correct or that things won't change in the future.  However, in order for that to happen we need more feedback and more community involvement willing to tell us what they want...and most importantly, support us by coming out and buying a ticket.

Many thanks for the explanation - and lots of luck for your future development. I can understand that audiences are looking for lighter fare, and in that sense you are basically following Derek Nimmo's very successful formula.

I wish I had known about "Loot" (obviously didn't read the forums!). I love Joe Orton's plays. If you'd consider "Entertaining Mr. Sloane", I'd be in Pattaya like a shot! But then I expect every member of your audience has his own favourites.
