Guest fountainhall Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Anyone looking for good old British-style pies in Bangkok can head for a pub or two, but there is one small shop that makes and sells excellent pies. Simply named The British Pie Shop, it is situated near the top of Soi Yen Akat (that's not far from the Malaysia and Ibis Hotels just to the right of the 7-11, about 300 meters along Sribumphen and then 50 meters down Yen Akat). I only heard about the shop because it came second in one of the BK Magazine tasting polls and thought I should try them. So a few weeks ago, I walked past in the late afternoon, but the only item they had left was good-sized sausage rolls for Bt. 80 for two. They were excellent. Yesterday at 5:00 pm, they had only Cornish Pasties (beef, potato and vegetables) at Bt. 100 and Apple and Blueberry Pies @ Bt. 50. Clearly you need to be there earlier for the full range on offer. The Cornish Pasty came with excellent gravy and was so filling I am waiting till this evening to try the fruit pie. The English owner told me they deliver quite far - even to Sukhumvit (although how far down Sukhumvit I did not ask). They have also started making different kinds of bread. And, very admirably, they donate their profits to charity. click to increase the size Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 A short follow-up. The Apple and Blueberry Pie was wonderful! I will be returning for more! Quote
Rogie Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 If I was in Bangkok right now I'd be sure to head over to this shop. Unfortunately I am in Pattaya and will be getting the airport bus direct to the airport next week. The list of pies looks wonderful and I'd definitely buy a few, although the prices look a bit steep, about UKP2 for a pie, which is more than you would pay 'back home', although I haven't seen them so they may be larger than they look in the photo. Of course, to be realistic, one has to factor in the costs of baking pies in a foreign country plus your restricted clientele. I don't suppose that many local Thai people are amongst the shop's customers. I tried to trace the Imagine Thailand Foundation referred to in the flyer. I wonder if it's the same as this one, called Imagine Thailand? http://imaginethailand.org/ Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 It's the same charity. You can see the logo on the Pie Shop's flyer. As for prices, I have not eaten many here in Thailand and so do not know how they compare. All I can say is that the sausage rolls and the cornish pasty were very filling. The apple and blueberry pie was smallish, but I thought very good value. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I'll try the pie shop as soon as I find my mittens since I have been a very naughty kitten. I have to go there anyway to check out Christmas decorations at Bangkok locales and then check some stupid logo with foreign writing near a gay hotel. I can't imagine why I am doing all this. Some serious business that if I don't do it, Kokopelli will jump two steps ahead of me and I can't let that happen. Then Kokopelli will be eating crow instead of pies. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 So Khun thaiworthy is getting 'on his bike', so to speak. Just remember the first question in the Quiz refers to last year. And what was current last year, may not be the same this year. Who knows? But enjoy your travels! Quote
