Guest fountainhall Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 SInce there are many restaurant reviews now appearing, here's a quick 'plug' for one of Bangkok's best restaurants - Eat Me just off Soi Convent (before you come to Sauna Mania). This is now a Bangkok institution after opening more than 14 years ago. It's a small restaurant with art gallery. You reach it by going up one set of candle-lit stairs and are greeted by always smiling - and usually gorgeous-looking and superbly efficient - staff. The food is best described as Australian-fusion, and in 11 years of occasional visits, I have never been anything but excited by it. Open only for dinner and not cheap, it is a wonderful evening out. A couple of weeks ago, the bill for three of us after three-course meals plus a bottle of wine came to Bt. 4,800. Tripadviser has it No. 21 out of 1,509 Bangkok restaurants. http://www.eatmerestaurant.com/ Quote
Rogie Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Thanks to that excellent review I decided to go there last Friday. I hadn't booked but decided to go anyway. I had a reserve just in case I couldn't get in - Indigo restaurant, another place just off Convent Road. I made sure to arrive early and got there about 6.45pm. They managed to squeeze me in and I was ushered to a nice small table outside. The place was still quiet then but soon afterwards began filling up. I had a Beer Lao and just a main course. Food was fine, I wasn't pushing the boat out as IMO not much point in doing that when you're dining solo. I echo FH's comments re the staff. Quote
Guest Promsak Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I agree fully with Fountainhall's review. A nice cosy, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I haven't been there for a while but the last time I was, they had a small jazz combo playing on the terrace. If you go, ask if they still have the complimentary drink ----- vodka wizzed up with Mars Bars! Quote
Guest takeaway77 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I completely agree about this place. I wandered in one evening, had a drink at the bar and and was then escorted up to the dining room. It was indeed a fantastic experience. I had the burrimundi prepared Thai style with 3 glasses of Australian chardannay. My waiter could not be nicer. For certain I will go back next time. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 It must sound as though I spend my time eating in rather good restaurants. Far from it. Once a week at most, and more usually once a fortnight. But this week I have had several friends in town, and on Friday to celebrate a reunion with a friend from London whom I had not seen for around 3 decades(!), we went to Eat Me for dinner. For me, this restaurant never fails. On my last two visits, the cutest of the waiters had been having his day off and so I had not seen him since October. As soon as I entered, he came over, smiled broadly saying how nice it was to see me again and why had it been so long since my last visit!! The restaurant was packed and we were lucky to get a table at quite short notice. Our table waiter was another long serving member of the staff. He told us he's been there for 10 years (odd how I hadn't noticed him so regularly). I started with mountain bread nachos with gruyere and spicy salsa and followed that with a fig and blue cheese ravioli with walnuts and a butter sauce. My friend had the rocket, pear and roquefort salad with a risotto topped with black truffle and prawns to follow. We finished by sharing a large banana and passion fruit pavlova (with lovely crisp, slightly gooey meringue) and a fresh raspberry and coconut salad with various additional flavourings. All utterly delicious. The Australian owner, Darren, came over for a chat to ensure everything was to our satisfaction and to give us his thoughts on other restaurants he's visited recently. As usual, dinner was a joy - even though my favourite waiter was working other tables! As we left, he again came over to thank us and hoping I'd be back soon. Great service can help compensate a little for any faults in the cuisine. At Eat Me, I find it hard to fault anything, so you just get the best of both worlds! We paid full price for the meal! Sometimes at Eat Me you get a complimentary liqueur. This time we did not - and would have declined if offered. Quote

When good reviews come in from people I trust, I always try to make it to those places in future visits. Please keep eating at good places and sharing the details with us. Quote
