Guest fountainhall Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 A fire last night in a function room at the 3.5-star Grand Park Avenue Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 22 has resulted in a female tourist dying from suffocation. Another tourist is in intensive care. It seems most of the guests ran up to the top of the building, but firefighters could not get to them them as their ladders could only reach the 6th and 7th floors. They had to be led out another way. From a photo on another site, it seems the hotel has about 12 floors. http://www.news24.com/World/News/Tourist-dies-in-Bangkok-hotel-fire-20120309 Quote

Guest fountainhall Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 It seems that the hotel fire is yet another example of property owners making illegal alterations to buildings without official permits. The Bangkok Post reports that part of the car park was converted into a Banquet Room in 1994 and there was no sprinkler system installed! The hotel had only one fire escape which was too narrow, making evacuation difficult. He reports adds that 50 other major buildings will be inspected for illegal structures. If found, the owners will be given until September 30 to correct the problems. If they still have not been made by that date, owners will be subject to three months in jail and a fine of Bt. 60,000! Just Bt. 60,000 when lives could be at stake? Unbelievable! http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/283692/illegal-modifications-fingered-as-cause-of-deadly-hotel-blaze Quote
