LGBTQIA+

I'm wondering when did the LGBT that we all started to get to know towards the latter part of the last century become LGBTQIA+? Since I am from the generation when being called "queer" was a pejorative term and one most of us loathed, I remain unhappy at the includsion of Q but fully accept later generations have no issue with it. I am perfectly happy with T. But what do I and A stand for - and why a + sign?

I stands for intersex, A stands for asexual, + is added to hold space for the ever expanding alphabet soup.

Amd where will it end, I wonder? It's already too long in my view.

26 letters in the standard English alphabet.

Then there's symbols.

I am old enough to remember the controversy to accept the letter "B" to the existing LG acronym.

There were many worries to let the bi-sexuals into our "movement" for fear that the bi-sexuals were too closeted to help our movement and that it might be detrimental to our cause.

Those fears eventually subsided, and we became LGB.

Then the letter "T" presented themselves, and from what I can remember, they were accepted into the movement with less controversy than the letter "B".

By the time that the next letter "Q" came up for consideration, I was no longer a gay activist, as I had moved onto other issues.

With the addition of all the extra letters, activism has changed too. It is less now about loving who you want and more about being whatever you want.

The cutting edge of activism now would find the title of Bangkok Pride 2025 problematic: «Born this way» , because it implies that acceptance of LGBTQ+ activities and identities rests on biological immutability. Rather they would promote fluid genders and fluid sexualities only defined by choice, a liberationist framework rather than an immutability framework.

When I saw that they chose:

     LGBTQ+

Instead of the current full acronym:

      LGBTQQIP2SAA

or abbreviated version:

      LGBTQIA+

I was wondering if this would have any negative consequences on Thailand's objective to host the 2030 WorldPride event.

Not sure - as I am no longer involved in these activities.

Thoughts?

This is not really the full acronym outside of Canada as 2S in that acronym refers to 2 spirits, which the indigenous populations in Canada use as a designation of queer individuals. It does not make sense to use that globally.

I don’t think their choice of abbreviation really reflects any strong ideological leanings as I believe the applicants are just as confused about the real meanings as most other people outside of a small group.

I'm afraid it's  becoming too complex and convoluted for general population to accept or even acknowledge. Serious movement may start looking like party of weirdos

"Upon arrival, they noticed a strong, unpleasant odour and requested a spare key from the apartment owner to enter the room. Sakesan was shocked by the tragic scene and became suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Nai’s death.

Sakesan also noted that Nai always wore a gold necklace worth nearly 250,000 baht, but it was missing."

250k baht gold necklace! 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Since I have moved to Asia from the EU in September 2022 --> one of the cultural differences that I have noticed is for some Asians to wear their wealth on their body - especially people from India.

This is something that I have difficulty understanding - is to put such wealth at risk against the temptation of theft and/or bodily harm.

Any wealth that I might have will not be on my body but instead locked away at the bank or in a safety box.

To date, my 2 different primary Thai boyfriends wanted me to invest in expensive gold jewelry in the form of necklaces, bracelets, or rings.

Why is their this need to wear your wealth and put it at risk of theft?

What's the point of having wealth unless one shows off?

🤣

It's actually quite universal behaviour, only that the way we show off varies from one culture to another. In the West, it tends to be flashy cars and yachts, in Arabia, I think racing camels and falcons...

Remember the term "conspicuous consumption"?  The term wasn't invented in Asia.

According to a Thai friend, the gold necklace was not actual gold, but a replica of sorts.

Technically, it is not an acronym at all.
An acronym can be pronounced as a word.
I suppose it is an abbreviation.

Ok, out of all the things we can discuss on this forum … Ok, here’s the distinction:

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase (like “Dr.” for “Doctor” or “etc.” for et cetera).

An acronym is a type of abbreviation formed from the initial letters of a phrase, where those letters are often pronounced as a word (like “NASA”) — but even when the letters are pronounced individually (like “FBI”), it’s still often referred to as an acronym.

So, while LGBTQIA+ iis not pronounced as a single word, it’s still classified as an acronym because it’s made up of initial letters representing a longer phrase.
