Earthquake felt in Bangkok

Recommended Posts

Posted

Just spoke with my guy in Bangkok. He was in his apartment near Quarter Hotel on Soi Tarntawan when his building began to shake strongly. On the way out he and another resident helped remove an 88-year-old man and got him outside. He now says many businesses are closing around Silom. Has not felt any aftershocks yet.

A building under construction in the Chatuchak district has collapsed following a significant earthquake, trapping 43 workers, according to the National Institute for Emergency Medicine.

Seven workers managed to escape the site, and the Narenthorn Emergency Medical Services Center, along with its rescue network, has been dispatched to provide immediate assistance.

In response to the incident, Army Spokesperson Major General  Winthai Suvaree announced that Army Commander-in-Chief General Pana Claewplodtook has ordered the immediate activation of the Army Disaster Relief Center for public assistance.

I didn't merely duplicate @bkkmfj2648; I posted before I noticed his post. I was relating what my guy had told me about his experience during the quake.

Apologies - duplicating was perhaps an unfortunate choice of word. But I still think if there is a major actual event happening anywhere in Thailland, with many posters living or visiting Bangkok there has to be a very good chance that someione else will also have picked up the information and might - stress might - have posted it in one of the sections. I'm sure you will agree that a quick check would avoid what could become two threads dealing with the same issue.

FYI, I did do a quick check, scanning for "eathquake" in the first few words of recent posts elsewhere. Since it appeared at end of subject I missed it entirely. So I don't agree with your rush to judgement, Peter. We're all unpaid contributors here and we're all going to make posts sooner or later that we could have done better. This is an unedited forum and duplicate posts are not uncommon.

Apologies - I did not really know where to post my post.  I just placed it in the Gay Thailand section, as I was not sure where to put it.

For future potential events like this is The Beer Bar a better place for these types of natural events?

I was experiencing this earthquake from Pattaya but I did not want to put it into the Gay Pattaya section, as I felt that this event was impacting ALL of Thailand.

Please advise?

The moderator, in the past, advised members not to worry about where they post. You placed your post in an entirely proper place as I did mine. There are no hard rules that I'm aware of except when it comes to photos.

This forum wouldn't exist if not for posters like yourself. Keep posting and don't worry. That's what's important.

Earthquake in Bangkok ? Is end really near ?

hope our boys are sound and safe. As veteran of few earthquakes I can say that scary part is that it's over before we fully realize what's going on so it's almost impossible to hide somewhere as often advised (under the table etc.)

as for duplication of posts and comments is almost impossible to avoid and I'm first guilty as often I read post , feel urge to comment immediately and than see down the thread others already said the same.

I'm surprised Bangkok suffered so much damage so far from the epicenter. Are the building inspectors corrupt, and open to bribes to certify buildings which don't meet building standards?

We'll have to agree to differ, the more so when the title of that other article not only mentions earthquake in the title but also in the main text - and the post includes a vdo!

It obviously gives you much pleasure to point out what you believe what others could have done better (aka, nitpicking).

I'm sure you're perfect in all your posts.

Have a wonderful day, Peter!

Nitpicking? Curious word to choose. I'd have thought the simple act of checking would be more approprite.

With less than two hours left in the day, I will enjoy it for sure. Thank you.

It isn't even true that there is a duplication! Both posted different responses according to their own individual or their partner's experiences and posted different links.

The more information the better, wherever it is posted.

As others have said, what's needed is more information on what's happening. I heartened to know that you and others in Bangkok were not injured.

Aside from the structures substandard build, I saw this video in regards to the type of land/soil Bangkok has, where it is more susceptible to the ground movement of sort. I don't know what's his qualifications are nor if his claims are backed up by science. Just sharing as a food for thought.

In the doorway is advised, especially  if there is an RSJ there. That's what we did in Lima, while keeping hold of our gin and tonic!

Absolutely agree. Much of the information at the start of an event like an earthquake is often speculation rather than fact - if only because facts are usually difficult to obtain. We can tell from reports here that some felt the earthquake was centred in or near Bangkok. Perfectly understandable given the videos we were seeing and the shaking most were feeling, Yet the fact that Bangkok is not on an earthquake fault line, unlike Chiang Mai and the north, was rarely mentioned in the early hours. Where Bangkok is susceptible to earthquakes is from relatively near fault lines. After living in the city for over 23 years, I can only recall one other earthquake emergency - from the massive 9.2 earthquake off Indonesia's Aceh Province in December 2004. That was roughly 1,250 kms away, yet apart from tall buildings swaying and evacuations, I cannot recall any deaths or disasters in Bangkok.

The epicentre of yesterday's quake in Myanmar was almost 1,000 ks away. Vitually the same distance. So one question that needs to be asked is: why did the Myanmar quake with a lesser magnitude of 7.7 compared to 9.2, the third most powerful the world had witnessed - greater even than the devastating 2011 quake off Japan, result in much greater damage in Bangkok? Perhaps it is partly the depths of the two quakes - Aceh being at a depth of approx, 30 kms underwater whereas yesterday's is estimated as a mere 10 kms below the surface.

Eventually the experts will inform us of the exact reasons. One thing  must surely be certain, though. If a quake 1,000 kms away on a recognised fault line can cause the damage and panic it did in Bangkok yesterday, building codes will need to be revised. How many of all the recent tall buildings constructed in the last 30 years or so are effectively earthquake proof? As we saw in Nepal in 2015, devastating earthquakes do not just happen years and decades apart. They can happen in consecutive months. Worrying!

And thank you @reader for your personal comment. I apologise for my earlier comments which may have cast doubts over your original posting.

That would be a feeling they'd be used to, given their customer base!    😂

Yes. Stand in the doorway of the smallest room in the house - I.e. the toilet - is the advice we were always given.

Unless you're in a hi-rise that's collapsing.
