Guest aussie Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 So, I am crossing a couple of borders that have been unfriendly to me in the past, and I have viewed over the internet but not saved a lot of porn (no minors I would think, but I do not know how that can be proved). I was thinking to do a system recovery on my hp,, which would take the computer back to original factory settings using a partition built into the hard drive, and then using the computer for a few days of boring web browsing, before heading home. Would this actually remove everything? Would it remove everything as far as the average customs office is concerned, presuming they don't send the hard drive to military intelligence? Is there something more or something else that I should do? The other option is to leave the laptop behind. Thanks Quote
Guest AKAHagrid Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 No need to do a system recovery: Delete all pictures and other data that you don't want seen. Fire up your browser and delete all the history and cache (typically under the under "OPTIONS" or "PREFERENCES" menu). Finally, download and install CCleaner (here), and run it--it's designed to clean out all the nooks and crannies. Be sure to enable the "wipe free disc space" option, as that will overwrite the deleted file data with random data, rendering it unrecoverable. One random wipe is sufficient for anything, all that DoD 35 pass junk is completely not necessary. I've crossed some of the most stringent checkpoints in the world having followed the above steps, and have never had an issue. Quote
