reader Posted March 1 Posted March 1 The United States embassy in Thailand has issued the following alert: On 27 February 2025, the Royal Thai Government deported a group of 45 Uyghurs asylees to China. Similar deportations have prompted violent retaliatory attacks in the past. Most notably, in the wake of a 2015 deportation of Uyghurs from Thailand, improvised explosive devices detonated at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok killing 20 people and injuring 125 others as this shrine is heavily visited by tourists from China. Actions to Take: The U.S. Mission in Thailand advises U.S. citizens to Exercise increased caution and vigilance, especially in crowded locations frequented by tourists due to the potential for increased collateral risk Review personal security plans Follow the instructions of local authorities https://th.usembassy.gov/security-alert-u-s-embassy-bangkok-thailand/ =============== The United Kingdom embassy in Thailand has issued the following alert: There are regular terrorist attacks in the 4 provinces in the southern tip of Thailand by the border with Malaysia. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to these provinces. Martial law is in place in most areas in these provinces, which means security forces have greater security enforcement and investigative powers. See Regional risks. bkkmfj2648 Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Above mentioned Thai government unfortunate decisions and actions against the 45 Uyghur asylum seekers now has repercussions. Thailand goes on and on about protecting its prestigious image but then the same Thai government does things to harm its global image with the resulting negative affects on the Thai citizenry - very sad. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20250310IPR27234/human-rights-breaches-in-thailand-sudan-and-azerbaijan https://www.reuters.com/world/us-sanction-thai-officials-over-deportation-uyghurs-china-2025-03-14/ There might be "good" news on the horizon in Thai politics - as Prawit Wongsuwan will challenge the current Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra with a NO-Confidence vote in Parliament sometime around the 24th of March - this month. Get your popcorn ready.... https://thai.news/news/thailand/thailands-showdown-prawit-wongsuwan-vs-paetongtarn-shinawatra-in-high-stakes-no-confidence-debate I personally do not really like Prawit - but he is probably less worse than the current PM..... thoughts?
