Safety around the Saunas

Hello fellow travelers,

I'm planning a month or two vacation in both Rio and Sao Paulo. Not my first trip, but this time I'm thinking about getting an Airbnb within a block of Point 202  and Lagoa so I can get in and out whenever in the mood. Stayed in the neighborhood before, so I'm aware its generally safe during the day walking around. Always took Uber at night before. Wanted to check whether anybody had any experience walking at night around the saunas for less than 5 minutes. Is it safe enough for a few minutes trek at night? Appreciate any insights. Thanks in advance.

I mean, hey it's Brazil so trouble can happen at any moment even during daytime - but that said, I usually walked from 202 to Copa and from 117 to Gloria metro, as well as from Lagoa to Rua Augusta. You do see some questionable characters on your way and you need to be aware of surroundings. I did a walk from 117 to Lapa (and vice versa) a lot of times too - I asked on several occasions a receptionist at 117 whether it's safe to walk - he usually glanced at the clock and said "for now, yes". I got a feeling it's ok until sort of 9pm-ish - and I very rarely left saunas later than that anyway

Me too. I have often walked those exact same Rio routes -- as well as regularly walking in SP from my hotel around Paulista Av. down to Lagoa.  And it has never "seemed" dangerous.

Forgive me if this seems to obvious but... It's crucial not to look like a target. So, zero jewelry, no watch, no bulging billfold. And dress down, not up.

Peter, cannot comment on SP, however, my apartment is in Bairro Peixoto. This is a small neighborhood 5 minutes from Point. It is a little gem in the middle of ugly Copa. Very quiet because there are no through streets. Older apartments surrounding a park that is used by the locals, with playground and the feira livre that travels around the city is there Wednesdays.  If you can find a place in Peixoto I don't think you will be disappointed.  (And, close to Siqueira Campos metro station so you can easily get to 117 or the better beaches of Ipanema.

Thanks to everyone who offered their personal experience. I'm definitely encouraged. Has anyone heard or experienced anything unpleasant?

Sao Paulo...a few times, woke up in an ambulance going to the hospital and another timed dropped off in the street in another part of the city, no idea where I was... my fault for being where I was well into the wee hours.

Never feed a Gremlin after midnight..... nothing good happens after midnight that you need to be on the streets or out at clubs at that time....since I've followed that rule, all good. Advice that Brazilians will agree is wise.

@floridarob for real? Your personal experience? I thought you go to bed early based on your previous posts. I normally get out before 10p. Fully understand the high crime rate in Brazil. Thank you Rob.

No, the opposite, Vampire life....I go to sleep still at 4-6am, wake up about noon....going out at 5pm is normal for me....I take whomever(s) I meet back to my hotel or apt and we hang out inside playing, talking, listening to music, fucking....etc...😉

You really need to become a day person☀️for your health sake.

It's obvious you were a person who perhaps worked night shift🌙🌙 or perhaps shift work so your body clock aligns with darkness ,and energy .
