Which would you prefer the U.S. to do in the Russia-Ukraine conflict -- try and end the conflict as quickly as possible, even if it means allowing Russia to keep territory it has captured from Ukraine, or support Ukraine in reclaiming territory Russia has captured, even if it results in a more prolonged conflict between the two nations? That poll stings. Hindsight is always 20/20. And I am the last person in the world to pretend to know anything about military or war strategies. But in retrospect W. was wrong and Milley was right.  W. is the easy US target to blame, for insisting that Ukraine had to be part of NATO. Lindsey Graham, somewhat incredibly, is still saying Ukraine should be in NATO, automatically, if Putin makes artificial peace and then invades again. Which of course means automatic World War 3. Stupid. All that said, Ukraine did not choose to start a genocide. Genocide Man started the war.  You won't agree, of course. But hey, it's a free country. The US is, I mean. Where Milley was right is that a deal perhaps could have been made after their fall offensive, when Milley suggested it. Ukraine was at its strongest, Russia was on its back foot, and support for Ukraine in America was strong. We'll never know what would have happened. Other than many lives would have been saved. And some of the most cruel things Genocide Man has done, like killing and stealing children on purpose, could have been avoided if he agreed to basic humanitarian norms. There is good news and bad news. The bad news is this is an utter and obvious betrayal of Ukraine, our allies, and the world. Once again, America is selfish and unreliable. That will of course be what Genocide Man says. But you don't need to say things that are obvious. I'm not sure if this stuff about minerals and rare earths is good news or bad news. Probably both. It is bad news in that it makes the US look greedy and mercenary. What a shocker! But at least some of what I've read suggests it was Ukraine's idea, at least in part. I think the logic has to be, "Hey Trump. You are a rapist. So, go ahead. Rape us. At least we survive." Too soon to say. There is good news for me, in sort of twisted ways. I've been anti-war most of my life. The two exceptions were Ukraine and Afghanistan. in both cases, it was self defense. In Afghanistan a terrorist group attacked us and killed Americans. As fucked up as that war was, I have no huge regrets. On an almost caveman level, what it did say is that if you attack us, you will suffer and die. I'd argue there was a net benefit to the whole world in saying that, and making it stick. Seems like the Taliban got the message, and decided we'll pick on girls but leave the rest of the world alone. Same thing in Ukraine.  You won't agree, but Genocide Man attacked without case and started a genocide. I have no regrets that the US and EU and much of the world took sides and backed Ukraine. That said, I'll repeat that Milley was probably right. So now I can just go back to my default, which is being anti-war. That's assuming some kind of weak and fragile deal is made. Since the Republicans were the ones that started Iraq, and were most supportive of the US taking whatever we wanted, it is actually nice that Trump at least pretends to be anti-war. I don't believe anything he says, including that. So his Gaza nonsense is no big surprise. But everyone is against that, thankfully. Trump will just focus on taking whatever he wants from Ukraine. As that poll above shows, this is now on Republicans. So we will see where it goes, and how it ends. But Democrats definitely said we oppose genocide, we oppose authoritarianism, and we will back Ukraine's fight for democracy against Genocide Man. In the long run, I think that is the winning side. But, for now, the bad guys won. Congratulations!  Quote
