6 months in Siem Reap - gay scene has exhausted me

I lived there for the last 6 months. I’m exhausted from this gay crowd. Is it me or is it a little bit toxic? Fell for someone who then decided he was a money boy and needed quite a lot of cash. He owned a bar and a car and bought his parents house seemingly but only had $100 to his name suddenly. Anyway that didn’t work out but other guys I met didn’t want to be scene with a barang in public, only the gay bars, and no one there is interested in using condoms. Crazy.

I wish these guys would be upfront about being money boys. I had a fling with a 40 year old guy, quite out of shape etc who then wanted money in the morning after the deed was done. All really off putting. 
 

and I’m guessing drugs have something to do with this? Is Phnom Penh any better?

I only spent a few days in Siem Reap. I was there for the first time last year. I met a couple of guys on Grindr, sex was free. And a couple of paid money boys as well. But I get what you're saying about them not wanting to be seen in public with foreigners. I sensed there was a lot of public shame about being gay. And that people were always watching and gossiping.

I am coming back to Cambodia this fall to see a college-aged hottie who studies in Phnom Penh. We have quasi-romantic intentions with each other. He's refused any modest offer I've made to help him financially. He wants us to meet up in Siem Reap. He refused a plane ticket and refused to let me reimburse him for the bus ticket. Of course, I like him all the more for this reason. I'm curious if he'll always be this way.
