We can joke back if we know them eg. handing them a 500 note for the bill and saying 'one thousand'. To be serious it's often a good idea to say what banknote we're giving them so there is no dispute later.

On my trip last month, my BF overheard an entourage boy of a big spending farang try to encourage one of the the TB mamasan/waiters to pad the bill and they could split the difference

Mamasan was quite clear in telling the boy to "get f*cked" and said that if the farang wants to tip, he will tip

In my case attempt was by mamasan
