reader Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago From Khaosod English Thailand’s population declined by 100,000 in 2024 to 65.95 million, marking a historic demographic shift as annual births fell below 500,000 for the first time since 1949, despite government efforts to promote childbearing through the “Having Children for the Nation” campaign. According to data released by the Department of Provincial Administration on January 8, 2025, Thailand’s total population stands at 65,951,210, with 64,953,661 Thai nationals and 997,549 non-Thai residents. Bangkok remains the most populous area with 5,455,020 residents. The country recorded 462,240 births against 571,646 deaths in 2024, continuing a four-year trend where deaths outnumber births. The marriage registry showed 263,087 new couples, while 147,621 couples divorced during the same period. https://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/2025/01/17/thailands-population-drops-below-66-million-as-births-hit-75-year-low/ Quote
bkkmfj2648 Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago Interesting statistic for Thailand. Being in the Pilippines, I went to Statista.com to see what the trend was for all of the ASEAN countries. It appears that there are 2 ASEAN countries that are still experiencing population growth; Vietnam and the Philippines. And when I am in these 2 countries you can definitely feel an abundance of youth. reader and 10tazione 1 1 Quote
Keithambrose Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Dies the Thai figure take into account net immigration, which, with refugees must be millions. Also no way Bangkok only has 5.45m people. Quote

It could be due to the fact that most Thai people don't update their National ID card with their actual address. For example, my Thai boyfriend's ID card still lists Sukhothai as his home address even though he has lived in Jomtien for many years. I asked him why he doesn't update it and he replied that he does not want to deal with the Thai bureacracy. Lastly, I asked him today why is the Thai population decreasing and he replied with these exact words: Thai people do not have more children because it increases many expenses. Thai people do not have children to reduce the burden. reader 1 Quote
