USD tips

I am on my way back to Bangkok. I have  a lot of small denomination  USD bills that I have built up. These are OK in Cambodia,  but I've not tried them in Bangkok.  Do boys accept these, as well as the red notes, etc? Via Vinapu tuck or otherwise!

USD are not in general circulation in Thailand the way they are used in parallel with riels in Cambodia. They can't be spent directly (e.g. in a 7-11), so by tipping USD you're giving the boy the hassle (albeit small) of exchanging them, which diminishes the value of the gesture. IMHO it would better to change them yourself and tip with real money.

agree, I  had a  case when I told guy I can give him 100 $ now or 3500 baht in the morning after I exchange money and he opted for second option.

Interestingly another boy from the same bar on the same trip asked me if I can tip him in USD , otherwise in the morning he must go and exchange some baht into it

If some member is in Bangkok and is planning trip to Cambodia soon I suggest to contact  you and buy those small USD's from you as in Cambodia they are very handy.

Totally agree.  The local currency is the Thai baht so why complicate things for such a small sum?  I once observed a Korean customer offer a masseur in Soi 6 some S Korean won as a tip & the masseur refused to take it.

this could be owing to unfamiliarity with currency, masseur  could suspect that customer is tricking him with some funny money even if Southern won can be easily and reasonably exchanged in Pattaya.

Once boy I offed was complaining that earlier in the bar customer gave him tip in some funny money and had eyes wide opened when I told him that 50 Brunei ringgit is the same like 50 Singapore dollars and instructed him to go to XOne and exchange it into baht easily .

Do not assume it's fate of only obscure currencies. For me fall of USD started back in Jun 2006 in small Ukrainian village Khotyn famouse for massive ancient castle. I wanted to buy beautiful, artistic  photo of that castle and being short of hryvnya, Ukrainian currency I offered 20 USD note which was even well over what seller wanted.  Guy on the market refused to take it and I knew that end of USD is near
