durian Posted Saturday at 04:18 PM Posted Saturday at 04:18 PM As far as I am aware grindr is not banned in Malaysia, I have seen others here using it without any problem. (without knowing thier service provider) Let me explain and see if you can help. We are currently in Penang. Hubby and I have 3 phones. 2 samsung galaxy S24 Ultra which we both use day to day. Service provided by Hotlink on both S24 phones. Our phones are updated at every opportunity, we know how to stay updated with our software. All of our phone apps are all updated very regularly 1 Samsung A15 which is our spare phone. Service provided by U mobile All prepaid, unlimited data month to month. We don't have any wifi or home internet, only phone data. We tried to sign up to grindr on the S24 phones and it always failed on the sign up page where you would enter your DOB I managed to create an account on the A15 in Malaysia using U mobile with out problem, but no thumbnails would appear and no images other than my profile photo. Other than that, grindr worked on the A15 phone. We went up to Thailand for Christmas and used AIS and everything worked perfectly on the S24 phones as you would expect. (we didn't take the A15 with us) Now we are back in Malaysia and both S24 phones can log in to grindr but again, no images at all, thumbs, profile pics nothing. We're getting messages and again, no images, so hotlink will let the grindr app run, just no images. We are a couple of old fossils with little phone tech knowledge with these apps but it would be nice to see who we're talking to if we're going to make some friends. I should also point out I am using the very gay Hornet app on my S24 and that works just fine, images all appearing as they should. I can see bums and cocks! I should also mention both S24 phones can log in to boyfriendtv website and we can watch gay porn with no problem at all using hotlink as the provider. If you have any advice we would be most grateful to hear form you in paragraphs that a 5yo can understand. Is this down to a phone setting? A security setting or a provider issue? I have emailed grindr support from the email account I created my grindr account with, on the A15, and android support at Grindr and apart from the fact a reply took over 12 days, the reply was are you using a vpn (no) send us a screen shot of the problem, re install the app, update the app, update your phone, and let us know if we can help. I mean really Sh*t tech support and we did explain in the email that if we could get it working on our S24 we would buy an annual subscription.... Many Thanks, Mike & Tris. Quote
durian Posted Saturday at 04:21 PM Author Posted Saturday at 04:21 PM Adding to this, hubby could not create a grindr account in malaysia on his S24 so he made one while in thailand, now he is back in penang, the app works for him but like me, no images at all in the app on our S24 phones or the A15 phone in malaysia. Both S24 still on Hotlink, A15 on U mobile. No images on any of the phones but logging in without issue. Quote

I am still amazed at how popular that Grindr is with the many negative comments that I read in many various forums. Also, their product is inferior when compared to the other gay apps that give you basic search capabilities and easy ways to remain in contact with previous guys that you would like to repeat with. Furthermore, Grindr has the most expensive subscription plans when compared to the other apps. How is Grindr able to: Treat its user community poorly, Command a high price, Have an inferior product, And remain to be so popular in the gay community? I don't get it. reader and floridarob 2 Quote

westernguy Posted yesterday at 12:40 AM Posted yesterday at 12:40 AM I use a VPN while in Malaysia....specifically Proton. It's free. Try downloading that. Grindr has no issues if I have the VPN turned on.....it doesn't work when i don't. Quote

I opened a Proton account to create the grindr account and among other things I was offered a vpn with the service so I will look in to giving that a a go. Grindr is certainly not my ideal choice but it seems to be very popular out here if you can sort the wheat from the chaff of messages that get sent. Hornet is much better in terms of useability and not throwing adverts at you every 4 fucking seconds. Quote

durian Posted yesterday at 02:49 AM Author Posted yesterday at 02:49 AM update Thanks to vinapu I've just subscribed for one month (to see how it goes) to proton vpn for the princely sum of £9 and grindr is now working as it should. This also means I can carry on downloading torrents and log in to chaturbate on the laptop again so double bonus there! We had been considering using a vpn but as yet hadn't got round to it. I can now spend the entire day learning how to get the best out of it on 2 phones and the laptop. Once I'm happy with it with it then I'll go for an annual sub. On a side note, we won't be subbing to grindr, that bit in the email to tech support was just there to try and drum up some f***ing help. The free version of that will suffice for our needs as we're not proper whores, we just like to know who's nearby out of morbid curiosity... Many Thanks vinapu. vinapu 1 Quote
durian Posted yesterday at 06:25 AM Author Posted yesterday at 06:25 AM A couple of hours later...... Both S24 phones now have proton vpn running and we can go places we never could before. Connecting via australia is a novelty. Got proton windows app on both laptops now, windows 11 pro and windows 11 home The 11 home laptop took some setting up with qbitorrent but that's working well now. Port Forwarding is something I know about but never had to use before, but that's all sorted with a bit of help from google and YT, as is telling qbit torrent to use proton as the network interface. The 11 pro laptop is now letting me listen to a radio station I was otherwise unable to hear since I came to Penang. Been able to check my messages at boyfriend tv at last and log in to a few other 'banned' websites I was used to when in the UK. All in all a very sucsessful morning, the only downside is I am having to tether thro' the A15 phone (unlimited data) I am only getting two bars signal on the phone due to the massive concrete building we live in and the phone mast being behind the flat we are in, so signal strength is pretty rubbish but I did manage to download a 500mb flac file in around 25 minutes, so it's not quite as bad as dial up. Without doubt I will be buying a yearly sub to proton vpn. khaolakguy and FunFifties 2 Quote
FunFifties Posted yesterday at 06:50 AM Posted yesterday at 06:50 AM Glad to see you found a solution. When I was travelling SE Asia in november 2023, I had an eSIM from a provider called MobiMatter. I paid 14 usd for 30 GB of data and Grindr worked without issue in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Quote

Oh Dear, the joy of being an old fossil...might be time to get my reading glasses checked... My apologies for getting that wrong, I can't go back and edit now so.... THANK YOU WESTERNGUY. Your suggestion has proved a perfect solution for more than one aspect of our internet lives here in Penang. We are both very happy now thanks to Proton VPN. Thanks also to khaolakguy for pointing out my shortcomings. cheers . Quote
