Guest fountainhall Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 There was an article in the Bangkok Post yesterday about what looks like an interesting Journey of the Buddha Exhibition of Buddha Statues and Imagery. It's organised by King Power which in its wisdom has decided to charge farang Bt. 200 whereas Thais only pay Bt. 100. I am well aware that there is a double pricing policy at places like National Parks and so on. That's a different issue, as far as I am concerned. This one concerns a huge company which rips tourists off with outrageous prices at Suvarnabhumi and then charges them double to get in to see an Exhibition which should be of interest to many. The Exhibition is on at the VR Museum in the Crown Atrium of the King Power Duty Free Complex on Rang Nam Road. Daily from 10am-6pm. But try to find the location on the King Power main website - forget it! All you get is a message "Coming soon this late July, 2011". King Power is a disgrace! http://www.bangkokpost.com/arts-and-culture/art/249882/fascinating-and-beautiful-buddhist-imagery-on-show Photos from The Bangkok Post - photographer unattributed Quote
TotallyOz Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 But, the proceeds go to the King Power Foundation. I am sure the money raised will go to support the poor and underprivileged in Thailand. Right? Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 No idea! But I'd rather King Power, an organisation which makes a fortune from tourists, kept ticket prices the same for everyone, and instead donated a fraction more if its profits to the Foundation. Quote
Guest snapshot Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I'd rather King Power come clean about scamming and ripping off tourists who've been caught in its "shoplifting" scam. I buy a LOT of things from duty free airport shops around Asian but avoid King Power Duty Free shops in Thailand for this reason now. Quote
Guest Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 On the basis of what I see, I am inclined to avoid their duty free shops AND the exhibition. Quote
Guest takeaway77 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 These are all good points that have been raised, but the exhibit itself is stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit. Quote
Guest joseph44 Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 "Journey of the Buddha The VRMuseumis located in the Crown Atrium of the King PowerDuty FreeComplex on RangNamRoad. It opens daily from 10am-6pm. Admission fee is 100 baht for Thais and 200 baht for foreigners (20 baht for students and free for King Power members). Proceeds from the entrance fee will go to the King Power Foundation. For more information, call 02-677-8899" A rip-off? Why? It is clearly stated that the prices vary from THB 0 up to THB 200. It's up to the visitor to accept the fee. No rip-off, you do have a choice! Quote
Guest Geezer Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Tourists warned of Thailand airport scam http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8154497.stm Or Google: King Power Scam. Quote

No rip-off, you do have a choice! How many visitors, having heard about the Exhibition from one source or another, will go without being aware of the prices? Most, I expect, as this is very much an Exhibition for 'event-oriented' people rather than those who are 'price-oriented'. Admittedly the farang price is not high. So 'caveat emptor' indeed applies to some extent and you are therefore correct in that respect. The point I was making, though, is that King Power clearly makes mega profits by ripping off tourists at the airport - in previous threads I have outlined major price differences between BKK duty and other regional airports - and this, to me, seems yet another, albeit minor, case.
