Guest voldemar Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I have to admit that I am extremely uncomfortable with mobile phones. I have my I-phone with me which is in roaming mode but with data mode switched off. The other day I wanted to show the boys pictures which I took in Roayal Garden Plaza of Arm wrestling competition (did not stay till the end but huge Philipino guy had a chance despite the obvious proThai bias). Anyway, I clicked on the button and suddenly the words Dave Man Club emerged on the background of a map. I vaguely remember that salesperson told me that the phone has GPS in it but I thought it would not work without data mode. I then tried to get my location again pushing on map button but could not. Can anybody explain how can I check my location using GPS in i-phone and what really happened? In any case, I do understand now why DSK "forgot" his mobile phone in Sofitel and now I realize that Big brother has a capacity tracking me even in Dave club... Quote

I am not an iPhones expert, so others may have a more authoritative answer. iPhone does have GPS, which can be very useful. I believe the "controls" for GPS settings and access are different then the generic data mode. You would have to turn off GPS services separately and additionally from the data setting. It may be able to determine your location through nearby WiFi points, so it would not use the SIM card / data plan in that instance. Perhaps when you tried to have it "find" your location, there were no available spots for it to access at that particular time. I am not sure how trying to access your photos brought up a map. Perhaps you just pushed the wrong "button". I could not tell from your post. If you would like to reliably use the GPS, you would need to either have an active SIM card or an active WiFi connection. GPS services would have to be "on" in the settings. It should then be active and very easy to use. Quote

Assuming you are using at least ios4.0+: If location services is turned on, photos and videos (iPhone 3GS or later) are tagged with location data Quote
Guest Patexpat Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 This was the basis of a recent 'scandal' with Apple, as it was found that iphones and ipads were collecting geographic data as outlined above and even automatically downloading it on to a PC when connected. Technically this could be accessed by Apple, and indeed it was something you 'agreed' to when you accepted the T&C's. Apple have since issued a fix that limits the storage of data to the last 7 days, or even allows you to turn it off ..... but most people weren't aware it was on in the first place! Quote
lexusgs Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Have some fun with your iPhone and download Grindr. Lots of hot guys on there especially at weekends from BKK. I hooked a rather hot young Arab guy last night who is on holiday with his friends Was quite a refreshing change Quote
Guest voldemar Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Thanks, guys. It was really useful information. I started using mobile phones quite recently and really need to learn how it works. Quote
