I know what do you mean. Somewhere in this forum there's my report from my first visit to Pattaya   in  Nov 2014 and I recorded my first impression that city seems to be full of sad looking farangs. I was ready to give up on Pattaya but some wise members advised me to give Pattaya a chance , I did and now see her advantages although I'm firmly in Bangkok camp. I don't like sea but like rivers

Too many of the expats here (Pattaya / Jomtien) forgot how to have fun, stay healthy, and create a positive attitude.

Dancing is good for your health and morale.  Sitting in those bar chairs night after night with the standard uninnovative and unexciting bar manager mantra of "farang sit and farang drink" is just SO boring.

@Olddaddy please open a cool fun dance place in Jomtien.

I know many of the readership prefer Bangkok - but there is no sea to look at and the air is so much fresher and healthier out here at the seaside.

Yes, add me to that list.  Pattaya and Jomtien as a paradise ... as a tourist ... heavily influenced my decision to retire here.

But the reality of living here is not a paradise ...

My original plan was to retire in Italy (as I also have an Italian passport).  But some years back on the gay Roman beach I saw some situations that turned me off of that idea to retire in Italy.  The elderly retired gay Italians on the gay beach are often despised by the non-elderly gays.  On some occasions, I saw with my own eyes old retirees who had sand kicked on them when they tried to strike up a conversation with the other younger gay Italians.

After I saw those incidents - I remembered that I NEVER saw this type of behavior in Thailand - especially at the gay Dongtan beach here in Jomtien.  The elderly are very welcome.

So, I guess our retirement locations have good and bad.  For me, living here is too transactional - but I would rather have that problem than having sand kicked on me because I am old and the young gays despise us gay elders - because their hostility towards us is their own fear of getting old.

Let's make one thing clear: I'm not trying to romanticize anything. I'm trying to tell things as it is. I don't even let myself be dragged into pretty pointless (to me) arguments, such as "what is real love" or "Transaction-based relationships are not real" blah blah. I never deny that money is important in JC "love stories". Please, those working boys come from poor family, of course, money always matters! To many of them, money is not just a means to achieve goals, money is the goal itself.

I always look at it this way, to quote my favorite character from my favorite show (The Big Bang Theory)

Bert: You guys are nice, but I'm just gonna buy Rebecca a Jet Ski and see if that gets her back.

Ask yourself this: why the boy chose me among paying fellow customers? Because of my good look? my personality? the way I care? I give him more money? Or because nobody else was interested? Or a little bit of everything?

Whatever the reason, you obviously have something to offer that others don't, at least, at that moment in time and place. So what if you entice the boy, first and foremost, with your money? At least, you have money. And later on, if he finds out about your other endearing qualities and grows more attached to you, doesn't it make it even better?

I once half-jokingly asked J. what else, apart from my money, made he fall in love with me. His answer is brief and, as clichéd as it may sound, still moves me "because of what I feel when I'm with you."

About two months ago (we were in a hotel in Vientiane at the time), in the middle of the night, J. suddenly turned to me and hugged me so tight, his whole body shaking, he woke me up (he was never a clingy type when he sleeps). Then he stopped and I went back to sleep. The next morning, I asked him about what happened. "I had a terrifying nightmare. Of course most are dying off now which isn't a bad thing as it brings in a newer modern generation

A week ago, a customer offed both J. and his friend from his bar in JC to continue partying in Boyztown. About 10 minutes after he arrived, J. sent me a message "I'm going back. I don't like it here". My first thought was: the customer forced J. to do something he didn't want? Should I be alarmed?
