At least on a superficial level, it FEELS like we did not just lose a very important battle. We lost the whole fucking war. Emphasize the word FEEL. And the main reason I feel that way is Hegseth. I'm pretty sure, if not certain, that he said what he said about NATO with absolutely no diplomacy with our allies, and perhaps drunken impulses. One of my brothers is a recovered alcoholic. And, even though he has been sober for a decade, some of those reckless patterns stay even when the booze goes away. That said, I don't think we lost the war. And it is possible that Trump is a plus right now, in a weird way. He may keep Putin off balance, if only because Trump himself is always off balance and chaotic. By Nov. 2024 it was clear neither Ukraine nor Russia could win. So the basic idea, "Let's stop the bloodbath," makes sense. And the polls say that is mostly now where Ukraine is at. The whole mercenary thing about "give us your minerals" makes the US look like shit. John Mearsheimer, who I think is considered the #1 foreign policy realist, basically agrees with the idea that we need to focus on China, and end the unwinnable forever wars in Ukraine and Gaza. His point is that, so far, maybe Trump has good realist impulses. But it is horrific diplomacy, and there is no clue what the strategy is. If there is one. Even many of his strong supporters see "Gaza Riviera" as this bizarre distraction that mostly builds hatred toward America. I agree. That said, this is another reason why, so far, if I had to choose between W. and Trump I would take Trump in a heartbeat. W. arguably doomed Ukraine when he insisted they eventually have to be part of NATO. So Trump knows that. And I don't disagree with the idea that he will remove the thing that most irritates Putin. But it does leave Ukraine seemingly defenseless if Putin just rearms for Round Two. And the diplomacy is awful and weak. Do that concession in negotiations with allies, if you are going to do it at all. This is Trump's normal chaos, weakness, and inability to be the least bit diplomatic with our strongest allies. Quote

Agree with everything you said, Sis. But I will add one positive point. Which is that Trump is too stupid to fuck up America that badly. If he does go to the extreme, tries to become a dictator, and goes off into crazy shit from there, that would change my view. But, so far, as you say, he is just a weak and stupid man pretending he is not. Since this is above my pay grade, I will just lean on Mearsheimer. If anyone is interested, here is a brand new 30 minute interview of him. I think he is mostly right about most things. He, by the way, has been against the Ukraine war since it started. He would argue we unnecessarily antagonized Putin, going back to what I said about W. That said, Ukraine did not invade Russia. Putin invaded Ukraine. I am glad the US was with Ukraine when they asked for our help. I think in the long run it is one more reason Putin's corrupt Federation will collapse. in that interview I hyperlinked, Mearsheimer was asked whether the US is in decline. He basically said no. But the nuance matters. From other interviews, I know he feels that when the US really has to fight a hot war or cold war with Hitler or the USSR, we are likely to win. He thinks we have the strongest military in the world. Can Hegseth fuck that up? Probably not. So he says the biggest variable is our economic power. Right now, our economy is still the envy of the world. Can Trump fuck that up? I think even Mearsheimer thinks that is above his pay grade. My view is that Trump could only do that by bankrupting us. Like by somehow betting the US economy or the US Treasury on a Bitcoin bubble, to appease his special interest rich donors. That is what I think we most need to watch out for. As I mentioned above, Mearsheimer said Trump is flailing when it comes to diplomacy. Who would have guessed that? Since Mearsheimer is a realist, I am not sure how much he thinks USAID or "soft power" really matters. But he states clearly that we are at best confusing our allies, and perhaps alienating them, with awful diplomacy. Except for Putin, of course. 🥶 Quote

You could be right, though, and maybe he can't really fuck up America and maybe I'm just overreacting. I should probably have an early dinner and curl up with a good book. Sorry. This one is long, and hopefully thoughtful. It also involves blood. I mostly agree with you. I emphatically agree with one of your main points, which you have drilled in on for years. The main explanation for Trump's success is his authoritarianism. And the devotion of his authoritarian followers. It is not new. But, as you argue, Trump is particularly adept at giving those people what they need. @FuckNJoy is a great example. Because it is like Pavlov's dog. It is deeply wired. It is often not even close to rational or truthful. And it is an impulsive and reflexive response. And Trump's authoritarian followers are just fine with that. Who cares if Trump lies, and has a congenital problem with facts? And some of the veil on those impulses is coming off. "Normalize Indian hate" and "I was racist before racist was cool" and attacks on "LGBT activism" leave 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001 % doubt about who the target is, and what is driving this. Even JD Vance admits it. End hate? Fuck no. You disgust me. I listen to Rick Wilson all the time. He is, in effect, doing what Jon Stewart just mocked. I have to explain that. Stewart this week riffed on what is in fact a silly video of U.S. Rep Dan Goldman. Pretty Dan said what we really need is for a handful of Republicans (I assume he meant US House members, and he cited Liz Cheney) to voluntarily set themselves on fire. Stewart noted, correctly, "Good luck with that, Dan." We will no doubt see that soon in a gleeful and stupid @FuckNJoy Tik Tok. But Wilson is basically blowing himself up, as a lifelong conservative Republican. As is the whole Lincoln Project. That said, I'm being generous. All those White guys - they are mostly White and male - knew that in Trump's America they were all suspect, anyway. They are Romney guys, or Bush guys. So at least now they have a job. And we will listen to them. It is hardly self-sacrifice. To reverse the title of Wilson's book, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." That may be a fact, or it may be a dubious belief. Now we all get a chance to learn. We did survive a Civil War. We did survive slavery. (More to the point, Blacks did.) Women who voted for Trump could not have voted for anyone until about a century ago. The list goes on. Beyond all that, I was wrong about one thing. Once Biden was elected, I would sometimes argue that MAGA was "a peasants' revolt that failed." It did in the sense that the peasants did not get Social Security, or Medicare, or the GI Bill, or Obamacare. The big win is they got tax cuts for Elon Musk. And Trump failed to fuck up their health care. Woo hoo! But now there is a different spin. Maybe the peasants won. They are 2 for 3, at least. (Have to say, I mean some White peasants in a weird coalition with Elon Musk that can not get 50 % of the vote, now or probably ever.) And part of my subtext is that I actually want the peasants to win. Lots of authoritarians were Democrats. Arguably, FDR had authoritarian tendencies, too. He told the rich to go fuck off. At least publicly. So I have a message back to Dan Goldman. He is awful pretty. I would hate to see him with bloody and broken teeth. And, frankly, he prefers having Wall Street and corporate lobbyists, and their money, deep up his ass. (Don't worry, he is not Gay.) For that matter, so does Hakeem Jeffries. And Nancy Pelosi. Again, you'll see it soon in a stupid @FuckNJoy Tik Tok. So I don't think the real problem is we need another Liz Cheney to argue about democracy, in hopes that we maybe get just enough votes in some suburb to win Pennsylvania by 50.1 %. I'm tired of that. Which is not to say Liz Cheney is wrong. It is to say Harris was wrong for thinking that was either necessary, or sufficient. We are now beyond that. It is a lawyerly, nice, and safe thing that guys like Dan Goldman like. While they suck up lobbyist bucks. That is Ruben Gallego, US Senator, in a gym where he teaches his son and other kids to box. So here is my advice for Dan Goldman, and how we address authoritarianism and oligarchs in America. I want Dan Goldman to go knock Elon Musk's teeth out. I am serious. Knock his fucking teeth out. And, to be clear, I just read some right winger saying Democrats are creating an atmosphere of violence. No, I'm not. Trump supporters are accusing me of that? Fuck them. Fucking hypocrites. No. Musk thinks like Hitler, he salutes like Hitler, and ultra-centrist Bill Gates just said Musk will actually kill millions of people if he succeeds in completely dismantling humanitarian efforts to stop the spread of HIV and other diseases. So knock Musk's fucking teeth out. And tell the American people that you are doing it because this cruel asshole is a bully who thinks he can buy America, buy the White House, ignore public safety, and fuck consumers - including Trump supporters. Oh, and piss all over democracy. Knock his fucking teeth out. Fight. Be proud of it. Tell America why you did it. If Musk is a man, which he wants to prove he is by being unbelievably cruel to his own daughter, then be a fucking man. Knock Goldman's teeth out. Sorry, Dan. You are awful pretty. But be a man. Take one for the team. Back in the 80's, when I was on Capitol Hill fighting the good fight a lot, it was easy to hear war stories about how people who worked on Capitol Hill literally got in fist fights in bars. In 2020 Elizabeth Warren impressed me by saying she would draw blood to stop predatory lenders from fucking over the little guy and the little gal. Is Warren a sadist? Or a hypocrite because she has maybe 0.000000000000000000000000000000000001 % of the wealth Musk does? Because people admire her ideas and her guts, and bought her stuff? Or because she invested wisely? No. I think Democrats and Independents are begging for someone who will fight like hell for them. Trump will at least pretend to do that on TV. He's good at it. A lot of people who are center or left of center think Bobby Kennedy is a hero for fighting Big Pharma and the food and drug industries. We're about to find out whether they are right. So here is an amazing reversal, that I think explains how I feel. In a new YouGov poll (p. 101), only 21 % of Democrats say they are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way democracy is working with America. 31 % of Democrats are not too satisfied. 40 % of Democrats are "not satisfied at all". I'm one of them. How could Trump have even been a serious candidate after Jan. 6th? Meanwhile, 64 % of Republicans are satisfied with democracy. I won't fact check myself on this next statement. But I am pretty sure that is a direct reversal of how Democrats and Republicans saw it a year ago. And we know what changed. Very importantly, only 30 % of Independents are satisfied with democracy. 51 % are dissatisfied. 19 % don't know. That is great news. That tells me Independents do not see Trump as the solution to our democratic problems. The ones that voted for Trump just want lower prices, and fewer undocumented immigrants. They support LGBT activism, but don't want transgender people in bathrooms. If we want to actually build a majority coalition, we know the Independents are there. I think we also know how and why we have to move to the cultural center. More than anything, I think we need to fight like hell for the working class. Part of the formula here is that authoritarian followers tend to follow authoritarian leaders at particular times. Like when they are hurting. So if we don't want authoritarian leaders like Trump, which Democrats and Independents do not, we better focus like a laser on what is causing their pain, and what Democrats can do about it. I do think Dan Goldman knocking Elon Musk's teeth out would be a good start. Quote
Members stevenkesslar Posted February 14 Members Posted February 14 2 hours ago, lookin said: I shared my thoughts on the mental illness I believe Trump is causing in our society with a colleague Yes, these posts are book length. But you are bringing up ideas that have been on my mind a lot. Mark Halperin predicted that if Trump won it would result in perhaps the biggest mental health crisis in US history. The reason why is that many Democrats would not understand why. And they would feel alienated from the country they live in. I think on this a blunt and personal reaction is most helpful. So I will start with this. Give me a fucking break. I'm not saying Halperin is wrong. Maybe he is right. But the USA is the country of slavery. More recently, the USA is the country of subprime lenders and the Iraq War. (Where is @Moses when you need him?) One reason Trump won is some Democrats who do not understand why we armed Bibi The Baby Killer to slaughter Palestinian babies either would not vote for Harris, or voted for Trump in protest. What exactly about any of this is surprising to anyone? Who did we THINK we were? Most Black people seem to have reacted to Harris losing by saying, "Okay. So now we know. This is America." I did not take that to mean, "Gosh. I'm shocked!" Some alienated Black guy, or Hispanic guy, votes for Trump rather than Harris because his rent is too high. And he agrees with Trump that some guy who doesn't speak English from wherever does not deserve free shit while I suffer. If the immigrant is gonna steal my shit, that pisses me off even more. If Democrats are so smart, why didn't we read this stuff EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY for years? I'll be the first to admit I underestimated the problem, even though the media was reporting it. I didn't see it as being a reason Biden or Harris would lose. But now I am going to have a mental health crisis over it? I don't think so. The 64 % of Republicans who are mostly satisfied with democracy because Trump won are mostly right. At least today. We had a very hard fought and passionate election with turnout closer to the historic highs than lows. Trump won, but barely. Democracy is alive and well. I don't doubt for a second that many Republicans would throw democracy under the bus. It's not even a question. They did and do see Jan. 6th as a Day Of Love. And maybe they will destroy democracy. But they have not yet. And, even if they try to, that is an argument AGAINST withdrawing into some mental health crisis. Fight. I want to see some Democrat knock Elon Musk's teeth out. Just to prove that some insanely cruel rich fucker who torments and bullies his own daughter for being queer deserves it. About two years ago I was in La Jolla with a family member who is the most full on MAGA relative I have. She says lots of stuff that is really ignorant, even though she is whip smart. It was arguably "elitist", but I asked her if she knows who Kevin McCarthy is. She did not. She thought her "RINO" Governor, Mike DeWine, who in her mind is RINO because he is not 100 % MAGA, was an ex-Governor. She had no clue he had actually just been re-elected in an almost 2 to 1 landslide. Because like John Kasich he tends to find middle ground when can. That was the trip I decided this is not worth my time. I had told her that, as a Democrat, it was difficult to lose twice, Gore in 2000 and Clinton in 2016, in an election we would have won in any other democracy in the world, without an electoral college. She listened, and just repeated all her Jan. 6th lies. I was in LaJolla with her again two months ago. I made a point of congratulating her on Trump's victory. We had a blast. I love her. I did not mention it, but the fact that this time he actually won the popular vote actually made it easier for me. Another election where a Democrat won by millions of votes but Trump won only thanks to the electoral college might have driven me over the edge. What I did not tell my niece, who is whip smart and who I do love, is that I respect her less. When she says things that are not quite as racist as "normalize Indian hate," which she does not do often, they bother me a little more. I am close to her mother, so I understand where she gets it from. My sister lives in a Congressional district in a suburb of Chicago that now has a Black US Rep., Lauren Underwood, who I deeply admire. My sister would never vote for her, and was not a fan of Black Lives Matter. A generation ago Underwood's repeated victories would not have been possible, simply because of the color of her skin. In the big picture, Underwood's victories outweigh petty racist comments by a relative I love. Literally, when I hear something racist I can just send $20 to Underwood or Harris. Sorry, I am not going to have a mental health crisis. I am going to celebrate all the progress we have made, and fight like hell now that we are deep into the absolutely predictable backlash. And thank you, JD Vance. I think he has normalized the idea that, once in a while, I can tell these pricks how I really feel about them. Although not my niece or sister, who I love. It probably is good for my mental health to get that off my chest once in a while. lookin 1 Quote

Isn't that special! I say, enjoy it while it lasts, Mayor Adams. I was curious how the Mayor's race looks as of now. There were two charts that say it all: Adams is wildly unpopular. The only person even more wildly unpopular is Trump. Looks like Cuomo is a shoo in. Like Trump, he has risen from the dead. I of course have to make a few comments. Cuomo is not exactly wildly popular. He has 45 % approval and 48 % disapproval. So he will win, if he does, because he is the least worst alternative. If I were a New Yorker, I would have voted for Adams. I was behind the curve on a lot of things, like immigration and how toxic it would become. Partly because I live in Palm Springs, which is a relatively calm and quiet place. But by the time Adams ran it was clear that crime and homelessness were really starting to bother people in big cities. I don't know that there are any conclusions to draw from his failure. Other than that he was the wrong guy. But I'd also say this explains how almost all my nieces and nephews feel, who are my guide to "young' voters. It's just a series of bad choices, usually. That's not a good thing. That, to me, explains why Trump won. A lot of young people thought Biden was too old and not delivering. So they voted for Trump, holding their nose. Although Harris came close. What is a good thing is stability, which is why I'd guess Cuomo will win. Two things stand out about him. He was viewed as the guy who could effectively manage COVID, even though NY was hit early and hard. Lots of people I know wished Cuomo was President rather than Trump when things got bad. Two, the name. We know this guy. Warts and all. Which is how Trump's voters feel about him. We know this guy. Lesson to me is Democrats need to stick to our core values, and fight for them. And then govern effectively. It's a little bit of a stretch to say that is what the name "Cuomo" stands for. But I think that is a map to our road out of hell. Not the man, personally. But fighting for our values and not giving up. What Adams proves to me is that the chaos and corruption and inability to govern will be a big part of why Trump fails, like Adams is failing. Quote

I wish politicians like Cuomo and Clinton could have kept their hands off da chicks. stevenkesslar 1 Quote
