I've been to China several times, not since Covid however.

I was this year in China. Grindr in Beijing was pretty quiet, but I was mostly visiting various tourism attractions. Destination gay club was crazy busy, it was Halloween. English was challenging there. No dates in the capital.

China is a diverse country. You can’t generalize, unless it’s Chengdu, whose entire population are bottoms. A scientific phenomenon, really…

Grindr works with a VPN. The users will all be rather affluent and many will speak English as this is not the default app. Those on it know the audience and are likely seeking tourists or travellers.

That’s because they essentially work as VPNs. The traffic is routed through the provider, and you are subject to the laws of where that eSIM was issued. For example, if you are using an eSIM from 3HK from Hong Kong, you can access everything, apart from TikTok, which does not operate in HK.

You should respect the laws of the countries you are visiting though.

I liked e-sim (there are also other providers) from practicality reason - you buy it when outside China and activate in China; my home apps remained functional and I got connectivity in China, including Grindr, Alipay (important!). Its fully legal solution like any roaming. Alternative is to buy Chinese sim in China (lower cost) and install VPN (requires research which work and is legal). 

Dating is legal, prostitution is illegal (respect of local laws…). I got only one escort contact, but did not have time to explore it further.

The main barrier in China was the language. I did not change my views on the Communism.

There are gay spas and masseurs available on Grindr. Physical prostitutes can be found outside of venues like W, shockingly, trying to flirt with lonely men entering and exiting a boujee hotel.

if you’re in a major city, called a tier 1 or new tier 1 city, language shouldn’t be a massive issue. Chinese translations apps are also very accurate, many even get the nuances of languages like regional Cantonese in recent years. 
 

WeChat is fully functional in English, and as feature rich as AliPay with a better UI, you can use it with a foreign credit card, they have a translate feature for mini apps and chat, it’s easy as pie my friend

I am not a friend of a communication through the apps, I like to meet and talk using my voice😀. In Shanghai, everybody who contacted me in Grindr was speaking English. But gay club in Beijing was not so easy or the guys were shy, however using translation apps in a loud drunk environment is probably working not very well.

The easiest introduction to Han gay culture would probably still be Taipei, as it has plenty of open gay establishments, tourists are welcome, plenty of paid and unpaid activities, etc.. Or to combine Taipei and Shanghai. And after that maybe other cities. Grindr in Nanjing was not overly active.

I enjoyed my time there, would go back because both Taiwanese and Chinese are fun people to be around!
