Yesterday (Tuesday) my Boyfriend and I took off on an adventure to the Mekong River, a National Park, and a new attraction just added this year, 3000 Holes.

 

It was about an hour and a half drive to the National Park, where we visited the "Painted Cliff" which is the Thai meaning of Pha Taem. You can drive very close to the top of the cliffs that overlook the Mekong River.

This is also a place where you see the first sunrise daily on Thailand. We will have to go back some day and give it a try at dawn.

 

 

 

This is a part of the painted cliff. These drawings have been here for something like 4000 years.

 

 

 

 

In the upper part of the park, there are some interesting rock formations.

 

 

 

We then travelled furthur north, stop by a "waterfall" that was a mist fall....not much water right now. Would probably be really neat during high water months...August - October.

 

 

 

 

 

 

We proceeded to the new "3000 Holes" which is named for all the holes that the river has formed in this area in the rock. There were a couple of hundrec people there, which was a large crowd to me in that area.

 

 

 

 

There are several boat concessions, and so we took a short trip up and down the river. It is quit interesting.

 

 

 

There are holes in the small cliffs all over the river, as well as on the top of more flat surfaces.

 

 

 

 

Along both sides of the river in that area are fishermen. In those areas were there weren't people actually fishing, there were lots of "stringers" where people have left lines probably with many hooks. There are also a lot of nets, and fishing with nets.

 

 

 

We made a loop, and were home in time for dinner. There were some dirt roads into the areas, but no really bad road. There were a few miles with lots of pot holes in the road....more than 3000.

 

 

 

 

 

That looks like a very nice trip. Where is this park? I'm guessing it is somewhere near Ubon Ratchathani.

Where is this park?

The park is about 100 km east of Ubon Ratchathani right on the Laos border....anything across the river is Laos. It was a nice trip, but with the walk down to the waterfall, and under the painted cliffs..both requiring some uphill climb getting back to the car, I am a little sore in the legs today.
