Medical insurance

As a resident of Japan, I must soon make a decision about renewal of my current medical insurance which provides very minimal coverage outside Japan.

As I plan to spend an extended part of each year in Thailand as well as some other international travel, I am now looking into private insurance plans. One firm in Osaka quoted me quite high rates (though I can save 50% if I choose their PlanB = worldwide, excluding USA, which is OK for my needs) but friendly agent advised that I might be able to obtain the same coverage at much less cost if I were in Thailand.

Can any of you point me in a helpful direction?

I currently hold a Thai "retirement visa" though I've yet to spend much time there. So, upon application for insurance, I probably can furnish only a transient hotel/guesthouse address until I obtain more permanent accommodation. Would this be a problem, I wonder?

Any advice/suggestions most appreciated.

Thank you.

BUPA has worldwide offices. They also have restrictions of medical insurance when traveling to the USA.

Another idea is to check the "Thaivisa website". www.thaivisa.com

They have a group policy which seems to have a good price. AA Insurance has an office in Pattaya on the soi beside Big C (south). They act as a broker.

Last Samurai,

May I suggest you look at my website

Traveler Jim's Insurance

and this link

for several international health insurance options available for you.

If you are citizen of the USA, the Patriot International policy might

be good for you needs.

It is a major medical health insurance policy and has many benefits

needed by those of us who travel or reside outside our home country.

It does have a pre-existing condition benefit

(if you are an American Citizen) which may pay for up to US $15,000 for the

"sudden and unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing condition when traveling.

That can be an important benefit if you have pre-existing conditions.

Hope this helps you...

feel free to pm me if I can assist in any way.

Travelerjim, may I seek your advice. I looked at your sites and understandably they focus on travellers. I have lived outside my home country (the UK) for 30 years. For many years I have been covered under a major expatriate health plan which provides almost all the benefits one could want with worldwide cover. Athough I moved my home to Thailand more than 7 years ago, I still run my own small one-man company - also overseas, and continue with the same medical policy.

Being now over 60, the premium has become horribly expensive. Although I still travel around 90 - 100 days a year, in future I will be much more Thailand-based. I therefore feel I need to look at a local policy for my cover here and a year-round travel policy. This should cut my premium considerably.

Do you know of any good medical-only policies here in Thailand with first class cover? And are you aware of any annual travel policy that will provide not only good medical cover but also good baggage cover. In my experience, most travel insurance offers just a pittance for baggage, certainly not nearly enough to cover a laptop, iPod and the clothing I need for up to a month away.
