ATM wise, Banco do Brazil is the best. No fee, good ex rate. Was using my ATM card from TD Canada. Worked in every city I visited, Rio, SP, PA, Iguacu ... It's also nice to have a no foreign ex fee credit card when visiting Brazil, save 2.5%. Credit card is accepted almost everywhere in Brazil. In Canada, amazon visa offers that. Nice to hear another visitor saying good words about Fragata, thanks for the photos. I will spend more time there on my next visit. Have a wonderful time and please keep the photos coming!

It is a nice trip, thanks to Maikon and Lucas. For a "sex trip" as axiom will call it, I have gone quite monogamous Maikon got a haircut, a little stub on his face, unshaven for a few days, looks even hotter. Woke up at 3am by the thunder storm. Cutting short my stay at Porto Alegre for 1 day to spend another night with Maikon in São Paulo. At the airport waiting for my flight. Sunday is a nice warm cloudy day. The city centro looks empty at 10am. My hotel is 200 meters or so from the metropolitan cathedral, I often took a stroll there then to the river bed for a walk. It's nice in the shades. Even machado is closed. If you like taking photos, you pretty much have it mostly to yourself Back to the hotels after walked up some sweat. The room cleaning is very well managed in the hotel, seems they call in the maid once you are out and it's done when you are back. Showered and out for lunch. The neighborhood buffet place is also closed! So walk to the shopping centre close to machado. Most of the shops are closed, but food court is open. Saw the cute dark boy occupied with a customer last night eating in McDonalds, small world There are a couple buffet places, 19r here, drinks extra. Food selection is very good. On way back to hotel afterwards, the hop on-off tourist bus ran by with just a dozen tourists scattered on the top. Hi, mvan1, yes, I am flying back to São Paulo, then fly back to Canada from there. Actually I am thinking about shortening my stay in porto allegre. Nothing to report about Thursday. Did the tourist thing, more trip advisor territory. The city is not very touristy, two days are enough in my opinion. Very sunny, get a burn walking around. Haven't had any action since the morning of New Year's Day, so I was all rested for the night out Friday. Got to Mezz~ at 6:30. It's much busier than wed, easily 30 or so boys, half full out of the 15+ tables in the bar area. My type is the clean cut slim school boy next door. Doesn't look like this is the place for me. Again the dim lighting in hallways really sucks. The only place you can get a clear view of the boys is either in the rooftop smoking area or right in front of the boys change room. I suppose one needs some Portuguese knowledge to enjoy the plays etc. I felt completely at loss at Museu da Língua Portuguesa. Although the small gallery across the street is nice. Also they are free on Saturdays. Would love to catch a football game there sometime. But for me so far without speaking portuguese, boys are by far Brazil's #1 attraction Rio, amazon and Iguacu falls are worth visiting on their natural beauty alone. Arrived in Porto Alegre around noon. Used their Metro and Walked to hotel from Metro Mercado. First impression of the city is very good. Beautiful europeanish square and tons of shops along the 10 min walk to Hotel POA residence, less than 100R a day. Tipped the doorman 2r since he showed me to my room. It's bigger than most 1br apartment in Toronto! Wash up, out for lunch, the door man recommended the buffet place one block away. It's a very nice place, good deco, large variety of salad, cold, hot dishes, fruits, juices, soup and deserts. Better and cheaper than the soup place on New Year's Eve in São Paulo. All for 15R! Fabulous. Both places, people are comfortable leaving their purses unattened when they are fetching food. As maikon commented, it's fine, good people here. Wake up from a long nap after the best New Year's Eve ever. This visit in São Paulo is great for a single reason: maikon. Unlike North America, New Year's Eve in brazil is such a major holiday, Lagoa is closed. Fragata, however, open short from 2-7. From my hotel at Praca Republica, it's a simple 15-20 min bus ride to Fragata. With the loc preloaded on my i touch, it's piece of cake to get there. I went since mvan1 likes it, and more importantly, given it's the only sauna open on the 31st, I might run into Maikon who still hasn't replied to my email. Fragata is in a residential neighborhood like Lagoa, but I don't feel like it's safe to walk to bus stop from it after dark, so taxi only at night. Lagoa area is perfectly safe to walk to metro after dark. It's not as classy as Lagoa. At 3pm, about 8 working 'boys", 6 customers. I am quoting "boys" since they really aren't boys anymore, none I am attracted to. Sunday, attempted to check out Fragatta since mvan1 gave good marks for its Sunday night. It's a single bus ride from praca republica, but the bus didn't show up as google maps predicted. It also starts to rain. Also haven't heard back from maikon yet, so I changed my mind hitting Lagoa again hoping running into Maikon there. Arrived around 6pm. Lagoa has more pretty boys, definitely my favorite, always someone I want to go after. MM is a miss and hit, on Wed, only one was my type, and he happened to be great in bed as well. Amazing. Afterwards, went to MM since nothing happened yesterday. Talking about class, the flip flops alone set Lagoa apart! Should have brought my own. Same at 117 last night. crappy flipflops. MM is more of a twinks place, more to my taste. Found Lukas after sticking around for 2 hours, had a great time. All u need is one. Only in RIO, taking in the scenery during the day, some guilty pleasure at night! If only the owners of Lagoa expands to RIO. Lacking of professional management seems to be the difference here. At Lagoa, they give you a print out with all the charges and ask you to confirm it before you pay. At MM, the cashier let you have a glimpse on the screen, then round it up when I pay by credit card. It's minor details like this and the towels and flip flops that make RIO's sauna looks cheap. Perhaps why they can't attract the "knock-out" good looking boys Lagoa has.

On transportation, as mvan1 stated, piece of cake to reach Lagoa via metro. As a first time visitor to both RIO and SP, taking buses are a bit overwhelming. Also Lagoa is so good, I didn't bother try Fragatta, which is supposedly easy to reach with several buses going there from republica. From airport to city, SP's express bus is more expensive (35). But stops right at Republica, half a block from the hotel I stayed in. Can pay by credit card and no stops in between. Also tried the regular bus+metro on arrival thinking it should not be crowded at 6:30 in the morning. Vow, in the mega city of SP, rush hour starts pretty earlier. 7am on metro is like back to china outside rush hours, not too bad. they have a much more extensive metro than Rio. Takes a bit to get used to, but easier than Paris for example. Although both Rio and SP should have a tourist pass so we don't have buy tickets more than once. Overall, I felt very at ease as a first time visitor to SP, almost feels like Toronto except i don't speak Portuguese. Much less so in Rio.

I also read somewhere São Paulo ranks in the top 10 most expensive cities in the world. But that's clearly not my experience. The hotel park republica I stayed in, at 50 us$ a night (closet, huge bathroom, large terrace, decent mattress) beats the 72$ a night 'cheap' love hotel (no closet, futon mattress for action, not sleep) in centro rio hands down! There are also tons of shops and restaurants at very reasonable prices in SP, about 50% more expensive in RIO. For example, there are many sit down quick meal restaurants around park republic, about 10R for either some brazil dish or pseudo Japanese. Around gloria, where I am staying now, similar plate runs into 20R, in centro, difficult to find a restaurant where you feel comfortable walking in not speaking their language. Lurker, If you are into twinks as your posts suggests, you are really missing out not hitting SP. give it a try next time! Coming from Canada, I have to say Iguacu beats niagara hands down, just as Sauna wise, Lagoa puts MM and 117 to shame. The only western standard sauna among the three, both facility and staff, very professional.

After 2 days at Iguacu falls, finally reached Rio again. Got to 117 at 8pm. Since there were some high remarks about the club, my expectation was probably a bit high. Have to say, not my cup of tea. There is simply no competition with Lagoa. Very crowded, too crowded. Feel dirty and run down. Left after an hour. Unlikely to return. More muscle dudes. Didn't find any at "must have" caliber. They did run out of rooms, so some chances the best ones are already taken. I am surprised there were not much postings about São Paulo here. While Rio sure is more beautiful, gay sauna wise, São Paulo is miles ahead. Also Rio is way more expensive ( hotel, food ...). Deeply disappointed. If only I knew, would have scheduled more days in São Paulo.

Since I only have one sat night in MM to compare with, it's probably not very fair, but lagoa is on a whole different level! Way way better! Day one was Friday night, arrived at 4:30. Got locker 51.
