For the younger people, in the early 80s everything to do with South Africa became toxic because of apartheid. Over time it became wearing on white South Africans to experience being shunned. You're correct, the tourist operations were quoting in euros, but restaurants in normal neighbourhoods were very inexpensive. The movie Dune was about $2.50 U.S. in the theatre compared to about $16 U.S. to see The French Dispatch in Paris. Also far fewer tourists which was nice for me, not so nice for the people whose livelihood depends on them.
