You may like to have a look at the italki platform (there is a website and app) as there are some Khmer language tutors and the rates aren't too bad.

I found that they (reception staff) didn't even look up from what they were doing when boy and myself got off the elevator and headed to my room (when I stayed on the 5th floor).

I agree. I'm sure everyone has their reasons, but for myself, I couldn't imagine relocating to another country and not learning the language. If I end up moving to Thailand (or other) one day, I would absolutely invest the time in learning the language, even if English is widely spoken.

Same! I am also short and I prefer short men. For me, I feel as though logistically it is easier.
