gaperking Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Hello, was a short while ago in Pattaya and Bangkok to see around. Former I found quite awful but latter I think I will return. This time I will use some hotel that is so to say guest friendly. Which one would you recommend in BKK? Does not need to be 'gay' hotel but just one that does not get difficult if I pop with a thaiboy. If you are planning travelling to BKK, you can drop me a private msg as well. Regards, Peter Quote

Next month will be my first trip to Thailand in many years---I had to give up overseas travel due to my mother's health. I taught English in Bangkok for a couple of years way back when. I am tempted to stay at the Tarntawan, but I think I will end up at the Malaysia. I will also be in Cambodia for few days to avoid Songkran---I have already done it in Phuket, Bangkok, and Pattaya. I guess it depends on where you want to be spending your time and what your budget is. I have long been a fan of the Om Yim, although a few things were in need of fixing up when I was last there in December. Later on in the month, I tried the Baan Silom & quite liked it. Of course, Vinapu is the expert, as he's tried many hotels. Quote

Both choices have advantages and are joiners friendly. Tarntawan is pricey compared to Malaysia but much closer to the action, breakfast for two is included and quite sumptuous. Malaysia is less than half price , rooms are spacious and airy but you need to budget for breakfast / 100-130 /, taxi from Silom /55-65 / , past midnight 80-100, motorsai from Lumpini MRT /20 /, whatever you decide you win. Yes , tried many hotels as I like to sleep around in a sense you noticed in one of your comments to my thread. Expert I'm not because other than 2 nights per trip in Tarntawan I like budget hotels and only those who share my taste should pay any attention to my notes. At end of day I'm tempted to agree that Om Yim may be the best choice, close to everywhere, reasonably priced and appointed, no elevator though for those who care about those things. Recently I'm developing soft spot for Nantra Silom in soi 8 , very modern with basic breakfast included but room smaller than Om Yim. TMax 1 Quote

Where in Bkk are you planning to stay? price range? and also importantly when? Even though you indicated the hotel does not have to be 'gay' it certainly makes for a more relaxed ambiance if gay. If it is silom area as Vinapu suggests there would be very few hotels who would object to a joiner/guest, some may take the 'opportunity' to charge for the guest, especially some of the high-end chains. If in Silom area, as others have indicated Tarntawan Place Hotel has a very relaxed, easy atmosphere and guests come-and-go all the time, you'll pay between Bt2,000 and Bt3,000 per night, but worth it in my opinion.I always book here at the end of a trip for easy access to Airport (45min-hour). I booked D'Varee, Silom (previously Ballys Suites) soi 2 silom right in the mix, for a short early June visit, huge range of prices depending when you plan to stay, deluxe/superior, with/without breakfast etc.. A Standard (described as deluxe) was Bt1250 when I booked 2-3 weeks ago, it is now Bt1440 for same. Not huge but modern rooms, nicely presented, nice bathroom with huge shower cabinet, flat screen TV, free WiFi, tea/coffee making facilities, wooden style flooring...and unlike Om Yim which is now very, very worn probably due to quality of original fixtures, everything is still in near-pristine condition at D'Varee. Hope some of this helps. Just as an aside, it would be interesting to know what aspect(s) of Pattaya you found 'awful'. TMax 1 Quote

Once at the Narai, security knocked on the door. I answered, and he said "Do you have a lady in your room?" Of course, I said no. But he insisted on checking for himself, and sure enough, there was no lady- just a hunky guy in his bikini. So, I was willing to pay the $40 surcharge, but the guy had no ID on him. That pissed me off. Why not? So he had to leave. At another hotel the name of which I forget, the manager was a gay friend of a friend. He told me there would be no problem with bringing guys back to my room. And, there wasn't. I had just escorted the guy to the lobby after a super wonderful time. Getting back on the elevator, a nasty looking guy in a suit joined me, but pushed a button for a floor higher than mine. You guessed it. He got off on my floor and insisted on checking my room for an unauthorized guest. Of course, it was empty by then, befuddling security guy. In the am I asked the gay manager about it. Later, he said he checked, and no security guy from his hotel had checked my room. Right. Every other time I tried, security nabbed us right at the elevator. So, I became aware of the Suriwong hotel. I just can't sleep in hotels that are not very comfortable and clean, but I can do an hour just about anywhere. Quote

Has somebody tried hotel that is with Babylon sauna? Someone mentioned renting apartment. Is there any safety issue involved? I find hotels more secure. Somebody asked why I did not like Pattaya. Well. It was dirty, overcrowded, noisy... I did not visit hills although, I understood more classy hotels are there. I visit one of the islands about 8 km from Pattaya, that was nice although beach was short and I did not see monkeys nor rainforest as brochure suggested... Quote

There are a few comments about the noise & note the poor score for sleep quality. Ballys Silom Comparison Om Yim I think recent Om Yim reviews seem to be worse. Possibly correctly. I have long recommended this budget option & have I stayed there for 7 consecutive years, but noticed deteriorating maintenance on the last trip. I may well be back as a guest, but it's no longer a given Baan Silom That's the other hotel I tried whilst passing through BKK again during the most recent trip. At the point where I decided some back up hotels are needed. Nice, for a few hundred baht more than the Om Yim. Quote
