Alexx Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 what about if you are on your way to Patpong or soi Twilight? Long jeans or chinos. I go there 3-4 times a year, so I think I don't need another exempt from my 'no shorts' rule for these few visits. More seriously, when I go there I'm usually on my way from or to elsewhere, so while I wouldn't feel out of place wearing shorts on Soi Twilight in particular, the same cannot be said about other places. bkkguy Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Since you metioned Surawong is at center of prostitution I don't think being escorted by a farang of the same or opposite sex is causing big face loss. how much Thai do you understand? how much do you notice people's reaction as you walk down the street? how much do you understand about how much he cares about people's impression of him in these circumstances? probably not much as after all the only people he knows around there are his prostitute workmates and foodstall owners - but would he consider he would lose face if observed by a holidaying relative or friend from his home village? My reading of situation was that he thought I'm losing face by way I was dressed, not him. in your original post you said "if we are in somebody's company way we dress reflects on them", hence my comment I think they are pretty bored confined in their bars or massage places so passing by busy Silom or Patpong in company of ugly but baht saturated farang may be entertaining for them. this is a serious comment is it? "entertaining for them"? I could understand if you said it was full of potential to divert you and some of that baht into presents, but "entertaining"? soap operas beckon on TV more entertainingly I think! bkkguy Quote
kokopelli Posted October 3, 2014 Author Posted October 3, 2014 bkkguy; I am somewhat intrigued and puzzled by your signature line: Intolerant Crap Shooter The Intolerant is obvious and self explanatory however not sure how that pairs with Crap Shooter. A crapshooter (one word) is one who plays craps or inclined to gamble or take risks. Although I suppose crap and shoot might have a more rude meaning? Wanna explain? vinapu 1 Quote
Alexx Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 how much Thai do you understand? how much do you notice people's reaction as you walk down the street? I don't know why that's often so much overrated. Seriously, who cares all that much about gossip and/or banter? The more I understand what people are saying about me, the more I just make fun of it and it usually works out very well. Recent example, my local motorcycle taxi drivers. Mocy 1 (in English, to me): You look very handsome today! Mocy 1 (in Thai, to his colleagues): He's looking fatter. Mocy 2 (reply in Thai to Mocy 1): Indeed. Me (in Thai, pointing at the visibly fat Mocy 3): I'm his older brother. Everyone's laughing, noone's offended. Take it easy out there. I don't usually walk around with prostitutes (not that there's anything wrong with that!), but I once walked around in Udon City with a Thai friend and a drunk female mistook him for a prostitute (and me for his customer). I think we handled her pretty well. vinapu 1 Quote

I pay plenty attention to peoples reaction , not that I care much but out of curiosity. He suggested one day he will be my guide if I go to his home town of Khon Kaen so likely has some idea what is causing face loss and to what degree. If walking through Patpong and Silom and people watching is entertaining for me even after 9 trips there I assume so is for the boy from provincial backwater, may be he dreams about hiring one of girls working here way some are dreaming about hiring a boy from bar but they feel that off fee is too expensive for them ? I think you think too much as Thais say Quote
vinapu Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I don't usually walk around with prostitutes (not that there's anything wrong with that!), I don't walk with prostitutes either , with sex workers yes. Unless this is short hop from bar to hotel in the same block I always ask them if we go by taxi or walk, invariably if walk will take us through Patpong ie. Adonis to BBB Inn or Dreamboys to Om Yim thay always / 1 recall one exception only / opt for a walk hence my earlier comments. Quote

Seriously, who cares all that much about gossip and/or banter? for many of my falung friends the more Thai they understand the more the blinkers fall away and they are no longer so easily conned into believing that Thailand is a "gay paradise" where gay lifestyles are more readily accepted than in the west If walking through Patpong and Silom and people watching is entertaining for me even after 9 trips there I assume so is for the boy from provincial backwater, may be he dreams about hiring one of girls working here way some are dreaming about hiring a boy from bar but they feel that off fee is too expensive for them ? the boy has probably done nine trips in the last week, but him enjoying the area I can almost accept but your original post was "in company of ugly but baht saturated farang" !!! or are you suggesting he is speculating that you will pay for your prostitute's prostitute? I don't walk with prostitutes either , with sex workers yes. see above about intolerant, and I am willing to admit that my sense of Political Correctness is permanently broken, so perhaps you can enlighten me on the difference bkkguy Quote

As long as they don't fall straight from the "It's paradise" trap into the "They hate us all" trap, which seems to happen mostly to hyperactive Thaivisa members. Quote

TotallyOz Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I have never felt the need to dress up in Thailand or Brazil or Paris or anywhere else. I much prefer to go in something that makes me comfortable. I am also cheap when it comes to clothes. I will put the 200 baht shorts in Thailand and wear them year round in any place that is not cold. I like tshirts and Birkenstocks. That is my daily attire. When in Thailand, I am on holiday and I want to enjoy myself. I feel no need to dress up to go and pick up a gogo boy or even to have a date with a non gogo boy. I am trying to think of the last time I really had to dress up in life and to my memory it was a funeral. I just prefer to be comfortable. If that causes people to stare and make nasty comments, so be it. I write this now sitting at my computer in Thai shorts, a tshirt and Birkenstocks. I guess that will be what I wear tomorrow as well. biguyby and vinapu 2 Quote

I'm with you 100% Michael, the only difference being at night in Thailand I wear a pair of Adidas track suit bottom pants to keep the mosquitos off of my legs. And yes, the last time I wore a suit was for a neighbours funeral. But hey, each to their own, I just find it strange when some guys are so interested in what other tourists are wearing and feel compelled to criticize them if the clothing doesn't fit their criteria for what "acceptable" Quote
