Guest bkktourist
Anyone have advice on location or names of bars that are a little more local and not full of tourists and boys looking to get money from tourists?
NIrishGuy
good luck with that last part .........
Alexx
There's the following problem, bkktourist: Those Thais who are into foreigners, for one reason or another (could be money, but doesn't have to), know where to find them: at the touristy places! So at the predominantly local clubs, as opposed to the tourist hot spots, most of the guys aren't all that interested in you as a foreigner. You're difficult to talk to (how's your Thai?), have strange manners and all that... That's not necessarily a bad thing if you go there with friends, just want to have a fun night out (fun as in drinking) and keep your eyes open for anything that might arise. Chances usually do arise, but unlike at the touristy places, there's no hook-up guarantee and you could feel bored and out of the loop if going alone. If you'd like to see such a local venue, go for it by all means, but it pays off to befriend some Thais first and go with them as a group. I go to local clubs with Thai friends from time to time and it's fun for me. Others might see it mostly as a waste of time. vinapu
You may be tempted to try Saphan Kwai area with few karaokes and last remaining go-go there - Be High , in Pradipat , soi 20. ChristianPFC
NIrishGuy
You may be tempted to try Saphan Kwai area with few karaokes and last remaining go-go there - Be High , in Pradipat , soi 20. We should add that that's the name of the Go go bar and not an instruction as to how you should attend, although being Thailand that is of course up to you, but definitely not recommended. lol vinapu and ChristianPFC
vinapu
Thank you for pointing it out Nirish, actually it crossed my mind after posted but I felt to lazy to edit, yes Be High is a go-go bar , not an advice.
t0oL1
Actually ashamed that in almost 20 years I have not once gone to the Saphan Kwai area, if only for the gay Thai historical perspective. Same for Saranrom park. I should go and take pictures (where possible), before it is all gone.
Alexx
Saphan Khwai and Saranrom are both for meeting prostitutes, albeit mostly for locals. I got the impression that's not what the OP was after.
Up2u
In Pattaya, Sunee and Jomtien complex are enjoyed by the local expats and the touristy feeling you get from Boyztown is far less prominent. kokopelli
NIrishGuy
Saphan Khwai and Saranrom are both for meeting prostitutes, ......... and the difference from many other places we all frequent would be ?? :-) vinapu

Guest bkktourist
I read somewhere about local gay bars on a street behind chatuchuk market where university boys go. Any news on that location and crowd?
vinapu
we need to have Christian PFC involved as this is close to his former area, you may wish to consult his blog
Alexx
......... and the difference from many other places we all frequent would be ?? :-) I've mentioned that for the benefit of the OP, who's looking for a place "not full of boys looking to get money". Hence I'm not sure why people have brought Saranrom and Saphan Khwai into the picture. The places I had in mind were venues where local gays hang out with their friends, not places where local gays go to hire a prostitute. vinapu
brought Saranrom and Saphan Khwai into the picture. I was me , crooked mind I guess and I did not read OP intentions correctly
pong
oToKo=beside Ch-chak ist mostly same as Ram(kamHaeng) and/or RCA=Royal City. Frankly: as a westerner you will not like it. Deafening music, table dancing, groups of kids around a large whiskey bottle-and the final 5 mins of cruising after the bars have closed (2.00 am sharp now, due to generals instructions). Also a few around sidesois of Ratchda-very raucous. Read christianpfc.blogspot.nl, it has several reports on visits to such places. Not strictly uni (those guys have not so much money). vinapu
ChristianPFC
Take a look at adverts in gay magazines (free for example in Balcony and Telephone, often with address in Thai or map). There are plenty of gay discos (Thai style) and Karaoke around. It's different from the bars in Soi 4 or DJ station, you might be disappointed (see Alexx' comments). I wrote about some of these places in my blog, there are many more I will go some time, alone or with friends.
