TotallyOz Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I just read that Nahm was voted as one of the best restaurants on earth. Sounds pretty exciting to me. Has anyone been there? http://www.comohotels.com/metropolitanbangkok/dining/nahm http://edition.cnn.com/2014/04/28/travel/san-pellegrinos-worlds-best-restaurants/index.html?hpt=hp_bn5 Quote
bkkguy Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 The lists of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants ... is created from The Diners Club® World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of over 900 international leaders in the restaurant industry, each selected for their expert opinion of the international restaurant scene ... we believe it is an honourable survey of current tastes and a credible indicator of the best places to eat around the globe." The World's 50 Best Restaurants - Manifesto I have eaten at both of David Thompson’s previous restaurants in Sydney - both received rave reviews for years - and have certainly had better Thai food and a better restaurant "experience" at other Thai restaurants in Sydney, and in Bangkok; nahm in London opened to rave reviews and was I think the first Thai restaurant to score a Michelin star but it has since been taken away; nahm in Bangkok opened to great controversy because of Thompson’s perceived attitude of claiming to know more about "authentic" Thai food than the locals and the menu makes interesting reading from this regard - wagyu beef has obviously been a Thai staple for centuries; but in the end the opinion of San Pelligrino and Diners Club are not sufficient to tempt me to try the place Michelin stars, TripAdvisor reviews, The World's 50 Best Restaurants, etc, are all based on "personal experiences [and] can never be definitive" as Diners Club at least says in their manifesto - so I am interested, what do you find so exciting about nahm's inclusion in the list? what excites you about the menu or the decor or the ambiance etc? what makes a top class restaurant for you? bkkguy Quote

TotallyOz Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Authentic Thai food? Try eating what the Thais really eat every day. I think this may be authentic Thai food for those that have too much money to spend? jk I can easily see many Thais eating this food. Just like in USA, many Americans eat at fancy restaurants where they put a flare on the food. It may not be typical of what a typical American would eat but it is still authentic. However, saying that, I don't think any American food cooked outside of a southern woman's kitchen can be authentic. They know how to cook. Quote
Alexx Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Exactly, there's nothing wrong with an offer of "authentic" Thai food that also shows some effort in the selection of the best quality of ingredients money can buy, a skillful preparation and a nice presentation of the food in a nicely designed restaurant. It's still "authentic" all the same, but without the potential downsides. While most would probably agree that Thai food can be both delicious and healthful, the way it's often prepared and eaten the "authentic" way, with sub-standard oil, heaps of MSG, etc. etc., often casts doubt on the truth of these attributes. kokopelli 1 Quote
