TotallyOz Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I have been eating breakfast at a very popular breakfast place in Jomptien for 8 months. I love the food there and usually only get the same 3 or 4 dishes. I am friendly with the waiters and always leave a tip. The owner is normally there in the AM and I say hello to him although I don Quote
Guest Aunty Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 A new owner or partner perhaps, or maybe a new head waiter? I hate it when that sort of thing happens; it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. But really all you can do is to take your custom elsewhere, and if they treat sufficient of their customers like that, they're the ones who will loose in the end! Quote
Gaybutton Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 It demonstrates a problem that is often overlooked. No matter where you eat or how often you eat there, always check your bill. Sometimes an unintentional mistake is made and sometimes it is deliberate, but either way you should make sure you're not being overcharged or paying for an item you either did not order or an item you did order, but never received. It happens often enough. Then there are the rip-offs. I'm surprised, GT, since you said the owner is there every morning that you did not call the matter to his attention. I've been the victim of the "new price" scam too. The menu or a sign says one price, and then you are charged another price. If you notice it you are told "this is new price." I have no problem with a new price, but I do have a problem if the menu is not changed to reflect the new price. It has always been my experience that if the menu lists a price, that's what you pay, but it doesn't work that way in Thailand. The problem is not limited to restaurants. One time I wanted to buy an inexpensive item at a major hardware center in Pattaya. There was a sale price clearly labeled on the item. 1500 baht. When I got to the cash register, the price came up as 2200 baht, nearly half again as much as the price tag said. I showed the price tag to the cashier. He gave me the "new price" bs. I told him to call the manager over. A young woman came and I don't think she was the store manager. I explained what was going on to her. She said the 1500 baht price was a promotional price, but the sale ended the day before and her staff had not yet changed the prices. I told her that is the store's problem. The price tag says 1500 baht and that's what I expect to pay. Of course, she refused. The item went right back to the shelf. I wasn't about to buy it under those circumstances. Being a "farang" there's really not much you can do about it other than what GT did. That is to pay the bill, but find another restaurant. In my case, I could either pay the price or refuse to purchase the item. Either way, that's the last time I shopped in that store. Quote
PattayaMale Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I am wondering if the owner is aware of this. Is he still there in the AM or could he be on vacation? If the owner does not hear anything, he may not know. I went to a cafe in Boyz Town which I had eaten at very often for dinner. I know the waiters and also feel I give them a decent tip both in the bill container and also under it as I have been told that that means it is for the waiter directly. The service because of recent changes was really poor twice. The waiters just stand and talk to each other and do not pay near the attention as before. I emailed the farang managers in an effort to help. I will go back 1 more time soon and if no change then I figure there are many other places to try. Quote
Guest wowpow Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Mistakes can happen anywhere. However, I do not seem to remember being undercharged anywhere in Thailand in a long time. Some times in the bars where they charge a premium on Fridays and Saturdays, the waiters forget what day of the week it is. Quote
Guest ear wig Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Well I agree with Gaybutton I would speak to the owner even though as I did one Christmas Dinner in a Hotel Restaurant in Boyz Town. We had a table for 18 people, our christmas dinner of which half had flown around the world to join me in the celebrations, we started with children singing then, older children singing, then the owner now passed over, dressing in a gay outfit, so we sit for dinner we wait and wait and wait, chatting and drinking ok it was a full. When our meal arrives sorry no Turkey only Pork, no seasoning all gone, thats not all then no christmas pudding only cake we paid 1400 for only the dinner each for this so, I complained to the owners 2 of them, they told me alarmingly they buy the Turkey sliced at Food Land and when its run out that's it nothing we can do, so we never went back again. If they dont care why should we..... Of course there is 3 great breakfast Cafes in your locality of Jomtiem 4, if you Include Dicks Cafe, #1) The most popular Pa Pa David's must be good Butterfly use it for there Birthday function now, when they always use to use Googies fab Food next door? #2) Linda's Just Next to The Gay Real Estate Office of Pattaya Properties. Then you have my favorite #3) Continental Bakery, if your problem was with any of these it must be a new waiter. Stand up to them dont let standards slowly be eaten into, even for breakfast I remember I was eating Breakfast in the German Patisserie next to Mosaik Apartments in Soi Day and Night the food portion so small and omelet so hard and dry it was horrendous and I broke my tooth on the Toast, and it was full of Germans who must like small portions but very unusual, 3 people told me it was so good I could not see why for the money not in my book, I spoke to the owner he said what do you want for this money, you Australians!!! always complaining, I said for145 baht I can do a lot better, he said good we dont want your type so dont bother to come back, not very nice.
