TotallyOz Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 I had a little tour of the new airport today. I can honestly say it was simply beautiful. They did a great job with the aesthetics of the place. If you have not see the photos that Boxer took, you need to go to his site and see. It is really a much needed improvement and a shining star in Asia. I do wonder if the other star will be built? (No, I'm not talking about a shrine to LMTU's black book) You know the 90something story star? Any news on that? Quote

bkkguy Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I can honestly say it was simply beautiful. They did a great job with the aesthetics of the place. I was particularly impressed with the "aesthetics" of the dirty windows, the stains on the canvas sails, the marks on the floor, the cobwebs in the ceitling in the arrivals area, the useless air-conditioning, the seats that you only appreciate the beauty of because there are so few of them .... but yes from a distance, and even up close if you don't look too hard, it can be quite beautiful - such a pity it is so disfunctional. perhaps it will help Bangkok become a hub for form over function! bkkguy Quote
Guest YardenUK Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I flew out of the new airport last week and will fly in again at the weekend. I have to say I was impressed with the spatial design aspects - and on top of that from getting out of the car right through to boarding I had no problems whatsoever (smooth as silk?!). Perhaps tissues at the departure gate would be good for all those tears Any new airport will have teething problems - any new building at all really - what Bangkok has in it's new airport is a very beautiful space indeed, that I am sure will improve once they take all the moaning/complaints into account hey guys, at least you arent flying in to Pyongyang International Quote
Guest francois Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 My experience with the new aeroport was vey positve. My flight arrived late at night on first night and I walked through immagration/customs and to my taxi within minutes. On departure I arrived at 04:00; walked from the taxi to the gate; checked in within 10 minutes and reposed in the business lounge for 1 hour. Walked to the gate at 5:OO; went through a baggage search at the gate and walked into the plane. I thought I was a VIP. No queue and no waiting and no people.Very strange. I don't think this will happen again but it was as good as it gets. Yes, Smooth as Silk. But yes, there was a trail of tears from Pattaya to the aeroport. Quote
TotallyOz Posted November 24, 2006 Author Posted November 24, 2006 Today I used the airport for leaving Thailand. I found it beautiful and spacy. I found the walk from the immigration to the gates for departure a LONG haul. I am not sure why they make you walk through all those shops. They even had shops I love. Since I was early, I had to look inside. Then, I spent all my money. Don't they know that people leaving Thailand don't have a lot of excess cash and to put nice stores there is like feeding an addiction? Anyway, the walk was hell. The boarding was fast and reliable. They did not allow for any liquids and even took my chap stick. I had a bottle of perfume and they wanted to take it too but I sprayed it on me and showed them how good it smelled and they let me keep it. Nice. All my bags were together and made it on the plane and everything was very smooth for me. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 I have had the opportunity to fly in and out of the new airport, both on domestic flights and international flights. I found the airport service quit good, the lines short or none at all. Baggage was on the turnstiles in a reasonable time, and immigration and customs were very smooth. I will grant that there are some long hikes to the various gates in the airport, but nearly all have moving sidewalks, so not really bad. Also saw a couple of wings that have not even opened, so looks like plenty of room for expansion. Overall I would give it a B+ or A-...much better than a lot of others (LAX, SFO, OHare, etc.) Quote
Guest Cedrick Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 With my first trip in and out of the new airport now behind me, I offer the following observations: (1) The lack of sufficient signs (or staff who can give accurate directions) is a major inconvenience. (2) The lack of sufficient restrooms in gate areas is an amazing oversight. (3) The walk between gate and customs is ridiculous. (4) The arrivals hall is worse than Don Muang. (5) The Louis Tavern lounge shared by Northwest and some other carriers is hardly worth visiting and its has no restrooms. (6) On the morning of my departure, one of the two runways was closed for repairs. A brand new airport with a defective runway is not an encouraging omen. (7) On the plus side, customs agents were efficient and pleasant. Quote
Guest wowpow Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 I arrived back to the new airport on Monday late afternoon. I was very impressed with the beauty of the buildings as was GayThailand. Despite all the harbingers of doom I had no major compaints. It was a long way from de-planing to Immigration - that is not exclusive to this airport - but there are superb moving walkways to help and little trollies for one's luggage - if anyone has luggage without wheels these days? Immigration was a tad slow but it was a busy time. How wonderful if everyone could be greeted with a wai and a smiles and a "Welcome to Thailand" by the Immigration Police. They seemed a particularly sour bunch that day. Luggage arrived promptly and I popped it on a nice trolley to go to the taxis which I knew were one floor down - why I don't know. A few were waiting for the lift but I risked the moving walkway (travellator?) and happily the trolley freezes into position on the treads - as at Carrefour. There was no line at the taxi kiosk to I was speedily whizzed to Suriwong Road for 370 baht including 60 baht tolls and 50 baht airport tax. I spoke to a friend from Canada today and he had seen the sign to Visa On Arrival and gone there confused as to the difference between that and a Visa free 30 days permission. He took a ticker number 167 and saw that they were serving number 65. After fuming for a while he spoke to an attendant and was sent off to Immigration proper. I thought that the signage was good for arrivals. I did not see and signs for going down a floor for taxis but maybe they are on the way or I missed them. Even the arrivals hall where people met was not as bad as expected. Overall I felt pretty happy about the place. Quote
