Rogie Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Can anyone identify the person in this picture. I believe there are no known definite likenesses of him and there is probably a fair degree of artistic license in whoever drew it! Quote
Bob Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I won't say as I cheated. There's an internet site which specializes in identifying the internet location of photos which you upload to their site. Ain't the internet marvelous? Quote
NIrishGuy Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Likewise like Bob I cheated to get the answer - I assume by the way that you KNOW the answer and are posting this for fun as opposed to asking a question to find the answer for yourself ? Quote
Rogie Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 Well done to Bob and NIrish and thanks for not spilling the beans. For anyone still interested, the subject of the photo is American and he was something of an adventurer, to put it mildly! His exploits occurred in the first half of the 19th Century. I don't know for sure but it is possible American children might learn of him at school. Quote
kokopelli Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I can think of a number of possibilites but all of them have known images. Quote
Bob Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I don't know for sure but it is possible American children might learn of him at school. I, being once (long, long, ago in a faraway galaxy) one of those American children, never heard of the guy and I'm doubtful that anybody I know ever heard of him. Didn't ring a bell at all. Given that, I think that the likelihood of winning the lottery is a bit higher than anyone actually knowing or guessing who this grizzled dude might be. Quote
kokopelli Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Ok, I also cheated but first had to learn how to do it. Although I didn't recall his name I did see a documentary or a movie about his encounter with a bear and was left to die except he didn't die. A remarkable feat of endurance on his part. Quote
Rogie Posted September 13, 2013 Author Posted September 13, 2013 Well done guys! Hugh Glass it is. Seems cheating somehow becomes respectable when it's so sneaky, but I don't blame you! I'd never heard of this guy being a Brit, but I honestly thought his name might be well known, even if you hadn't seen the likeness of him in the OP. I imagined him as every American boy's hero, maybe along the lines of Daniel Boone whose exploits I loved reading as a youngster in Classics Illustrated.
