Guest fountainhall Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Just a small addition to suggestions I have made in earlier posts. The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Park in the centre of the city is well worth a visit. Why anyone would wish to memorialize a man who was a tyrant, a gangster and a thief I sometimes fail to comprehend, but then I suppose he did ‘found’ what we know of today as Taiwan (although the local indigenous peoples of the island might have something to say about that)! The Memorial itself is uninspired both inside and out. But try and get there on the hour when they have a small changing of the guard ceremony. These soldiers are all young, slim, tall and often quite cute! Also inside the park is a pair of impressive-looking Chinese buildings. These house the city’s main Concert Hall and Opera Theater. The 2,000-seat Concert Hall boasts some of the finest acoustics in the world, and the Opera Theater is equally impressive, although it is rare to find western opera playing there. There is a subway stop right at the park, so you don’t need to devote too much time in getting there. Quote
