TotallyOz Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I love the Sathorn area and since I was last here The W Hotel has opened. It is one of my favorite hotels and I am happy it is right across the street from me. I walked over today for their Breakfast Buffet and it was delicious. The W is a great hotel and I am rarely disappointed with them. In the USA, it was one of the only nice hotels I was able to get my dogs in when I traveled with them. The breakfast buffet is on the 2nd Floor and up a winding staircase. I did not see a way to use the elevators to get there unless you go to 3rd floor and walk down. They have a wide variety of foods including make your own omelet and wonderful breakfast pizza. They have a Japanese area as well as all you can eat and drink. They had a bit of everything as you can see from the photos. I loved the coffee mugs and the glasses. They definitely run a high class establishment. The staff was adorable and funny and many many gays boys there flirting with me. In fact, I had seen some on Grindr and was wondering why so many boys were nearby me and now I know. They work at the W. The cost was 950 baht after taxes and service charge. It is not something I would do everyday but it was great for a treat. Rogie 1 Quote
Guest travelerjim Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Thanks for sharing Michael... 950THB way beyond my budget...but it sure looks delicious ! tj. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 WIth breakfasts like that and all their fat and cholesterol, I think you need travelerjim's advice on insurance!! Quote
Rogie Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 You're right to comment on the coffee cups (last pic). Nice Bone china for tea, and something a bit chunkier for coffee, passes muster for me. I confess I've never ever eaten pizza for breakfast. No reason why it shouldn't be a staple, maybe my breakfast choice is stuck in the 60's or 70's, or whenever it was muesli first reared its head in Britain. That's fine when I'm in my home environment, but would I want to eat muesli for breakfast when I'm on holiday? Fiddlesticks! No! Neither have I ever eaten Japanese nosh for breakfast. I think the breakfast buffet at W Hotel would challenge the comfort zone of my morning eating habits. TotallyOz 1 Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 The great thing about buffets on the scale of the one Michael has described is the 'infinite variety'. It will have your Muesli, tea and whatever else tickles your fancy for the start of the day (well, perhaps not that particular 'fancy' ), plus a vast amount more. So you can remain as conservative or adventurous as you wish. You can also stuff yourself to overflowing to avoid the need for lunch. But I wonder what the W Hotel's croissants were like? This is where a lot of the top hotels fall down, in my experience - especially the chain hotels. Most tend to leave a plate of leaden dough under a warm lamp and the end result tastes exactly like that - warm leaden dough. Light, crispy, flakey croissants are not suited to lying around on buffet tables. And most times I'd much rather opt for a simpler table d'hote breakfast with coffee, fruit, some cereal and - joy of joys! - a couple of deliciously flakey croissants. Quote
firecat69 Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Brings back memories of Hilton Old Town Prague with the best Croissants . They would come out with a tray and 5 minutes later they would be gone but never fear they would be back in 10 minutes with another tray. They were so fresh and so good. Now who in Thailand will have Cronuts first?? Quote
Guest Enchanter Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Thanks for the review Michael... 1,000 baht is a fairly standard price for breakfast in this standard of hotel. Some friends of mine stayed at W Hotel Bangkok and said it was great and it does look good, but unfortunately, I don't really like the Sathorn/Silom area. Rather stay around Lang Suan or Siam Square. williewillie Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 For a very reasonable but excellent buffet, including fantastic desert pastries, try the Hilton hotel in Pattaya. The Edge is on the 14th Floor with beautiful water views. Excellent coffees. This is a lunch buffet and only 300B. Quote
TotallyOz Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 For a very reasonable but excellent buffet, including fantastic desert pastries, try the Hilton hotel in Pattaya. The Edge is on the 14th Floor with beautiful water views. Excellent coffees. This is a lunch buffet and only 300B. I agree the Hilton was great. It was 550 baht there when I was there. Here is a video I took there: http://www.gaythailand.com/forums/topic/8276-a-view-from-the-hilton-hotel-in-pattaya/?hl=hilton I also did a mini review here: http://www.gaythailand.com/forums/topic/8218-best-breakfast-in-pattaya-one-gay-mans-journey-searching-for-great-bacon-and-eggs/page-2?hl=hilton&do=findComment&comment=60467 But, while the Hilton is a bit cheaper than the Pattaya Marriott or the W Bangkok, I did enjoy the food but it was not the variety at the other two. Perhaps willie can tell us what they have on their lunch menu as 300 is cheap if is it as plentiful as their breakfast. Quote
williewillie Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I attended a friends birthday gathering and was told it was 300b. My friend picked up the tab for a party of twelve. The selection was extensive with European, Thai and a seafood area, which I missed. Also pizzas. Coffees were superb.. Just offering an alternative daytime buffet in Pattaya. No doubt one can find out more by googling The Edge at the Hilton in Pattaya. No competition implied or intended. Just buffet idea for lunch. Quote
TotallyOz Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 No competition implied or intended. Just buffet idea for lunch. No one on this board is competitive with posts. But, we do love information. I am not much of a lunch buffet person and I have heard of few of those in Pattaya and thus why I wanted more information. I do think I had eaten at the Hilton for lunch one day but I do not remember it at all to be honest. I do remember someone telling me about it and trying it and enjoying it. I don't think too many places in Pattaya offer lunch buffets but I may be wrong. For me, I like a good breakfast buffet on occasion but I normally eat Yogurt and nuts for breakfast or a bowl of cereal and fruit. But, when I treat myself to a buffet, I like it to be good. There is one brunch buffet down the road at the end of 2nd Road that is excellent. I think it may be offered only on Sunday's. For Bangkok, I do love the Intercontinental Sunday Brunch but I think it is about 1500 baht and while great, I learned that taking the boys there was a big waste of money. I guess I have learned a bit in my 10 years in LOS. (not too much but just a bit) Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Seems the price of The Edge's lunch buffet depends on which day of the week you visit and what promotions are being offered. I see an article in a magazine 3 months ago had these prices - Monday to Thursday THB 420 nett Friday and Saturday THB 480 nett Sunday Brunch THB 1200 nett Wine Buffet THB 800 nett http://www.inspire-emagazine.com/pattaya/rediscover-seven-days-seven-themes-lunch-buffet-promotion-at-edge-restaurant-hilton-pattaya/ Whatever the actual costs when Michael and Williewillie visited, Bt. 420 or Bt. 480 nett sounds great value. In Bangkok I find if you keep an eye out for reduced price promotions you can often have buffet lunches very inexpensively. Last month I was at the Novotel on Ploenchit and got a 2-for-the-price-of-1 promotion valid only in June just for using a Krungsri credit card. As Michael says, though, the Sunday brunches at the top-end hotels are now hugely expensive. I can remember when the superb Sukhothai brunch was only around Bt. 800. Now it's Bt. 2,400 and I haven't noticed much being added to the menu! If you really want to push the boat out, the St. Regis has a free-flow Dom Perignon Sunday brunch at around Bt. 7,900++!! Quote
Moses Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 They work at the W. Yeah ))) And also at http://bkk-tours.com TotallyOz 1 Quote
