Guest fountainhall Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 There’s a lot of talk on other Forums about change of ownership. It seems SGT is likely to be sold quite soon, although nothing about the possible new owner has been published. In a roughly similar vein, the owner of Gay Ting & Tong who seems to live in the UK has canvassed opinion about giving up his Board. The majority of posts have proposed he continue the Board, but as one of gt’s regular contributors mentions in a post he made over there, not many new posts appear on that Board anymore. How this will all pan out, I have no idea. Quote
a447a Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 And it appears there are a number of posts from newbies who don't last long. I'm presuming they are, in fact, new members. But anything's possible. Quote
Guest Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I'm presuming they are, in fact, new members.Whilst some are clearly genuine, I'm presuming some are not new members & that some have more than one ID. As for the boards, well a couple of mergers would be preferable to closures. Whilst some of the chat, gossip and bar reports is only of interest whilst it's current, it would be a real pity to lose some of the travel blog style posts. These can be a nice reference for people planning their own trips. Quote
ChristianPFC Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 The majority of posts have proposed he continue the Board Off topic, but of linguistical interest to me: This is one of the rare cases where you can see the subjunctive mood in the English language (he continue) in contrast to indicative (he continues). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_subjunctive Quote
a447a Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Christian, Tu as raison, autant que je sache. C'est probable que tu puisses l'expliquer, quelle que soit la manière dont tu choisis. Das wäre interessant für uns. Sorry, couldn't resist! ChristianPFC 1 Quote

I had no idea I was using the subjunctive. In fact, I couldn't even get through that wikipedia article - it was too complicated! Thank goodness I never had to learn English as a foreign language! a447a Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Don't be too quick to judge, xian. Once "come unto me and all will be forgiven" Saint Neal goes there will be more transparency and less "it's all about me" posts. There's an inherent danger when the owner and the moderator are the same person. Posts deemed critical often lead to members being banned/put on moderation status. And that by someone who comes from the land of free speech! What a hypocrite! Since some boards share lot of members, maybe it's time for some rationalization as it seems there are a lot of duplicate posts on different forums. And let's face it, there are only so many topics we can meaningfully discuss on gay life in Thailand. Let's hope the new owner of 'the board whose name shall not be mentioned" is someone who has experience in running a board and is not a rank amateur way out of his depth. And someone who can maybe speak a bit of Thai and, thereby gain a deeper understanding of the culture. And someone who is not self-obsessed would be a welcome change. kokopelli 1 Quote
Guest xiandarkthorne Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I'll send you a PM about THAT board, a447a, because I am not talking about SGT and I have no wish to bring my history from other boards to this one. If anyone else wants to know, I'll be glad to let you know by PM, too. Don't be too quick to judge, xian. Once "come unto me and all will be forgiven" Saint Neal goes there will be more transparency and less "it's all about me" posts.... Quote
a447a Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Today I posted on Sgt that perhaps the buyer had gotten cold feet. I also told the present owner to spare us all the long farewells. Finally, I suggested that it seemed only positive comments were welcome. That post got me banned. Haha Quote

Perhaps, a447a had previous issues with the owner, perhaps warnings and perhaps the owner just a tad touchy. I suppose only the owner and a447a know. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 "Just a tad touchy??" After posting a link to one of the threads on this Board, I was the subject of a withering accusation of being a hydra on SGT - wrong - of not posting for more than a year - wrong, I had made more than 100 posts since May last year, the latest of which, prior to that exchange, had been early April - and warned about my future posting conduct!! I then got a string of near vituperative PMs which ended with my being put on moderated status. All this for trying to post a link!! Like more than a few others seem to have done recently, I immediately resigned from that Board. Quote
TotallyOz Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Hard to believe any forum owner would have such thin skin. It is not good for any owner to have such thin skin. When you do a message board, you must be willing to take the heat at times. I always found this easy as I have pretty thick skin. But, running one of these boards is not easy. It is a hard job and it is all the little things that make it so difficult at times. When you mix so many personalities who are so passionate about the subject, you will get tiffs here and there. Lucky that this board has few of these and the owners and mods are easy going do a great job here. baobao, kokopelli and williewillie 3 Quote
Bob Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Up to you (and, perhaps, the board owner and mods) but there are at least some of us here who would appreciate it if posters would not regurgitate their other board sagas and complaints over here. williewillie and khaolakguy 2 Quote
Guest scottishguy Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I think those who do not wish inter-board issues to be aired here on GT have to consider the fact that (from memory i.e. since I joined here) every topic which has touched on these matters have been started by long-established GT members and none by those who migrated here a few weeks ago. So, it would be entirely wrong to characterise the various discussions/opinions/criticisms which have been aired as some kind of vendetta waged by disgruntled members of/from another board. As Michael rightly says, forums often attract people who have passionate views on subjects - and if they are banned from posting their views on one forum it is inevitable they will post them elsewhere. Where did Bob lay the blame on NEW posters? He said " if posters would not regurgitate their other board sagas and complaints over here." That would include ALL posters, I believe. And I agree with that sentiment. Quote
Guest scottishguy Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Why do you assume I'm responding directly or only to Bob's post? I'm not. I had more than one of the preceding posts in mind when I made my comments - but I deliberately avoided pointing to them so as not to provoke an argument. Quote
Bob Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Just for the record, Scotty's been a gentleman and an officer (for that, Scotty, I expect a few baht floating this way) in not bringing his other board experiences over here. I didn't take Scotty's comments to be a swipe at me in any event; however, just because somebody has had trouble or even been banned on another board is no basis in my view to support their right to vent their fury here. I've somewhat blasted a board owner or two in the past but I've done that on their boards. Just didn't feel right (kinda chickenshit and arguably unfair to whoever I was attempting to criticize) to run to another board to do it. Quote
Guest scottishguy Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 The ideal scenario I agree is to make your criticisms or protest on the appropriate Board - but that's not always possible as Founty and a447a can tell you. Then the option becomes to STFU or post your observations elsewhere. In my case I have opted to STFU - something I am sure some people wish I would do more of !! Quote

williewillie Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 The owner in question has admitted to brain damage and strokes and the desire to retire from running the forum. Of course, if one feels singled out for retribution and abuse, it is difficult to be understanding. When a man is on his last legs and on his way out, maybe a little compassion would be appropriate here. One could say the same about others at death's door and try to forgive and move on. I do understand how annoying it is to have someone get up your nose but sometimes a good sneeze is the answer. KhorTose 1 Quote

a447a Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 i wasnt venting my fury at all; I was making the point that I had been censored for innocent comments - banned in fact. I thought it rather funny. I have never used this board to attack another board. I agree that would be inappropriate. I merely reposted my comments but refrained from being openly critical. Its the only way I can communicate with the owner, as I know he reads this board. Williewillie, that is one more reason I held my tongue. But yes, it is indeed ¨difficult to be understanding¨when you have been threatened with legal action on the basis that questioning the sale of the board in public somehow threatens the owners reputation! He has theatened numerous other members with litigation - and more. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I tend to agree with the suggestion that dirty laundry from another Board should not be dragged over here and that any comments should be confined to that particular Board. (Mind you, I can think of one site which would be down the tubes if it didn't spend 99% of its time trashing other Boards ). But others, too, have made a fair point. If another Board bans or moderates a poster for a quite innocent remark and/or for telling the truth - as was more or less the case with me - and if the owner of that Board then deliberately deletes reposts and makes it impossible to communicate with him by PM, then I suggest there is a definite case for at least mentioning these facts on another Board. It's not, as Bob has suggested, a regurgitating of what has been written on other Boards - because in my case almost everything was eventually deleted. It is merely an opportunity to set a record straight for those who did read the thread and wonder what happened to it. As I say, it's impossible to do so on the original Board. Quote
