Guest fountainhall Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 As an actor, Jeremy Irons obviously does something right. After all, he’s won a ‘Best Actor’ Oscar and a couple of Golden Globes, as well as being nominated by a host of other Award-giving organisations. Quite why he is so much in demand is, to me, a surprise, as he generally leaves me cold. In his roles, I usually find he is playing just another version of Jeremy Irons! Now, though, he has got his knickers well and truly in a twist. In an interview with the Huffington Post, whilst he has suggested that he has no strong views on gay marriage, he adds that tax lawyers are going to have a field day. For example, perhaps a man could marry his son as a way of avoiding death duties and estate taxes - "Could a father not marry his son?" . . . Irons argued that "it's not incest between men" because "incest is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don't breed," and wondered whether same-sex marriage might allow fathers to pass on their estates to their sons without being taxed. With a number of votes on gay marriage about to be taken in the US, many gay activists have been quick – perhaps too quick - to condemn Irons’ comments. To be fair, though, he adds he is all for everyone having someone to love, irrespective of gender. Also, Irons is known to state his mind irrespective of what others might feel. Examples of previous Ironisms include – "If a man puts his hand on a woman's bottom, any woman worth her salt can deal with it." The British government’s ban on fox-hunting is "one of the two most devastating parliamentary votes in the last century". http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/shortcuts/2013/apr/05/jeremy-irons-bizarre-objection-gay-marriage Quote
bkkguy Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 as usual the Guardian article is a bit of a beatup - the best they can really manage is "Ah, faultless legal reasoning" which is actually fairly close to the truth! I don't really really think of HP much more highly than I do the Guardian but the following links may add some balance to the Guardian link: http://jeremyirons.net/2013/04/05/jeremy-irons-in-response-to-huffpostlive-chat/ http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/04/04/jeremy-irons-would-gay-marriage-fathers-marrying-sons-avoid-inheritance-tax-video_n_3012356.html?utm_hp_ref=uk http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/04/04/jeremy-irons-would-gay-marriage-fathers-marrying-sons-avoid-inheritance-tax-video_n_3012356.html?utm_hp_ref=uk bkkguy Quote
