I never realised St. Sebastian was a woman!

At least St.Sebastian's torment is ended - it appears ours is just beginning.

Clearly someone slipped his minders in the kindergarden and is peeing all over the place. Won't last long!

So........................who won the painting?

I always wondered why it is that paintings of St. Sebastian seem to have him almost smiling at his gruesome death. And why is it that he has become the gay saint? Is it that 'affected' look, the way the arms are shaped, an almost 'fuck you' attitude? Or more that many of the artists were in fact gay?

No wonder - look at all the publicity he has provided them with!

Sebastian is also the patron saint of archers!

Based on the depictions, he'd fit in better as the patron saint of archery targets.   And I suppose Sarah Palin is the patron saint of the Mensa Society?!? :good:

So.....that's been two weeks and we STILL don't know who won, either via an update here, or on the Competition page of their Website.

Reminds me of the "Must be Won Tonight" motorbike competition which ran a few years ago in a BT showbar - it had to be definitely won "tonight" for the entire duration of my holiday and (according to some of the boys) it had been running for about 2 months!!

No wonder people become cynical.

Dear scottishguy,

No need to be cynical! The closing date was March 10th- our deadline for the April issue in which the winner is named!

Best wishes,

James.

That was all you had to say, at any point during the last 2 weeks!

Since you posted on a few boards and encouraged their members to enter the competition, it is common courtesy to let people know what is happening - via the medium through which you advertised it.

James, Scottish had somewhat of a point in that even your contest page didn't say how or where the winner would be announced.  Can't read your mind, you know.

On the other hand, my guess is Scotish didn't give a rat's ass who the winner was and was just being a bit pissy.

Dear Bob,

Fair point, well made! I suspected that the response to this competition was likely to be high as the prize was valuable and did not publish a closing date in the magazine so that, as was the case, as many people possible had the chance to enter. This is why I also posted it here.

fountainhall- love the Pierre et Gilles 'St Sebastian' above- I had a framed original of this back in the '90's!

Thanks to all those, from all over the world who entered the competition- next month you can win a signed copy of a brand new gay novel: 'Safe In My Lover's Arms', which will be launched in OUT iT.

For lovers of gay novels, you can buy 'Ban Den Friends' by Kenneth Dobson for just 199 THB at www.out-in-thailand.com/shop

This is an important work that shows the lives of young GLTB Thais as never seen before.

Best wishes,

James.

Ok, now don't keep me guessing! Which one of the painting is the Pierre Gilles?

The one at the bottom right!

I like this description of St. Sebastian as a subject for many famous painters -

"During the Renaissance there were few other current subjects with male nudes other than Christ. Sebastian began to appear in many prints and paintings by such artists as Sandro Botticelli, Andrea Mantegna, Guido Reni (whose painting so captivated Yukio Mishima), Giuseppi Cesari, Carlo Saraceni, Giovanni Bazzi (known as “Il Sodoma” due to his proclivity for painting and consorting with young men), Tintoretto, Titian, Girgione, Perugino, El Greco, and others. During this time, Sebastian as martyr became recast as a beautiful youth submissively receptive to his arrow-ridden fate. This image remains one of the most popular portrayals linked to homoeroticism – the bound and submissive young man, to be symbolically penetrated by objects other than arrows."

I thought that Kokopelli's own contribution (with the sailor hat) was more Pierre et Gilles than any of the others.

All the boy needed was a stripey top and he could have been a bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier aftershave.
