AN OPEN LETTER TO NEW MEMBERS FROM SGT

Recommended Posts

Posted

I see that we now have three new members who have announced on SGT that they are quitting that board.  I see they have decided to start posting on this board. First off I want you all to know that you are welcome by me.  I did not then, or do not now agree with your decision to leave SGT over what I think is a very reasonable and forward thinking decision by the board owner of SGT.  You all know I feel this way.  I do hope you like this board, and cannot speak for anyone else except myself, but you will find that while we can and do debate decision by this board owner, it is her board and she runs it the way she wants.  I for one cannot imagine leaving this board because i disagreed with a decision she made.  That said, this board is different. While I can promise you I will do my best to make each and everyone of you feel welcome, I do hope that you will all do your best to keep this a friendly and at times thought provoking board that it has become under her ownership.  Don't get me wrong, we argue with each other often and don't always see eye to eye, but we do our very best to keep it civil and use facts not name calling, sound reasoning and not sarcasm.  I hope you all find this board as pleasant as i do , and I encourage all of you to contribute often, and I promise i will do my best to make all of you feel welcome here.

Well, I suppose that passes for some kind of welcome from KT  :yahoo:

I do not think it is helpful to drag disputes from another board on to this one - I have not done so, and I don't know why you even mentioned it.

All I will say KT is that you know maybe 30% of the facts. Nobody disputes any Board Owners right to run their board the way they see fit, but where there is a fundamental disagreement, one has a decision to make.

I do not even know who the Board Owner is here, but I hope not to cause "her" any sleepless nights - and the other two SGT "refugees" are just fluffy little pussycats anyway HeHeHe  :mom:

I'm sure the 3 of us hope to contribute positively to this forum.

Now that our Walmart greeter has effectively taken care of the duties of the Welcome Wagon, I've only got one question:  Scooby's a girl? (I never looked)

I was just playing along with KT's gender assessment - I presumed he'd had a look (or a feel?)

:p

Well actually he/she is a great dane and I haven't dared to check out his/her sex.

As I've recently just registered ( even though I've been reading the board for many years) I'm not sure if you're referring to me in your three new members but I think you'll find I haven't or didn't announce anything to anyone either here or on SGF as I've nothing to announce.

As SG said I came here without comment and had no intention of bringing a discussion from another board to here so have no fear there, as I've said previously I also post on GBs board too so posting here or there or anywhere is no big deal to me and nothing should be read into that by anyone.

Meanwhile thank you for your open letter formal welcome ( at least I think that's what it was :-) and I look forward to continue reading and contributing at times hopefully to the many educating, entertaining and respectful posts that appear here.

I had no intention of mentioning SGT so I'm not sure why KT brought the topic up.

And I didn't "announce" that I was quitting the board.

But seeing as you have broached the topic, I left SGT because the board was hijaked by a small group of guys who are laughing at the rest of the members - and the owner.

I hope they are not allowed to register here and that this board will be a lot more informative regarding our common interests in gay Thailand and all its gay delights.

I'm looking forward to up to date info on bars, restaurants, where to go, etc. Simple as that..

Cheers

True internet won't let me access the "other" board mentioned so, other than having glimpsed it briefly through a proxy a month or two ago, I don't have a clue what's going on over there.

And, in my view, as the old saying goes, ignorance is bliss.  Please help me stay blissfully ignorant by not mentioning, even in passing, whatever it is one knows or thinks he knows might have occurred over there.  Thanks.

Sorry have I missed something about this forum, Khor tose owns it or is a moderator?  I didn't realise, i thought 'scooby'? was owner/moderator.  and why the fanfare from him for a couple of guys who have decided to join here? And why would you feel you have to go out of your way to make to promise to make them feel especially welcome?  They are just a couple of new handles here in a world of internet anonymity. All anyone here needs to do is stick by the rules. Dont most guys read and are members on more than one gay forum?

Whilst glad to see a447 and Nirish, caution is the only instinct i have regarding the first of the newbies mr scottishguy, whilst lauded by khor tose, for what reason i'm not entirely sure, my experience of reading SGF leads me to know that he was responsible for a great deal of board-rage, pissing contests and upsetting members with sarcasm and apparently witty funnies at the expense of others which actually caused 'tension' over there. I'm not altogether sure their loss is our gain here, more potentially their gain, whether it is also gain for here too would require a massive change in this scottishguys attitude to other forum/board members if his history over at SGF is anything to go by.

But it has been known for some to turn a new leaf, however spots and leopards also is hard to argue against. Maybe we can see where this is going if he decides to answer some of the posts here and the substance of any replies. As for not mentioning where he has come from, that to me is something which does need to be noted, given the 'style' of postings accept as the norm over there. This forum is a different animal all together, I read and contribute to most of the forums and adjust posting style/content to each one as per the accepted standards, only a run-in with LMTU in the past was off-rail here.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, nothing wrong with stating a few facts and genuine opinions. I fear Khor tose has gone rather 'over the top' this time.

I am not sure I understand everything you are saying here, but I go out of the way to make all new posters welcome and I wrote this just because of some of that baggage that you mentioned that may be coming over with them from SGT.  However, I am going out of my way, to say in far fewer words then you use, that I am more then willing to work with them and hope their experience here is a plus for both them and us.  Now what is hard to understand about that.  All I am doing is really talking about the elephant in the room before it becomes an issue as at least one of the people that A447a is talking about is a registered member here and will post if he so chooses.  You are aware of that I hope, or would you rather wait until it happens and we have a blow up. Don't know about you but I believe problems are often best solved with rational discussion when emotions are not running high.  I call it being adult and hardly over the top.

I don't know anything about any of the new posters but as KT says, they are most welcome here.

As someone who doesn't often read other boards, I find it very easy to welcome anyone new with open arms. This site has always been about people who love Thailand and anyone that wishes to participate in that is most welcome.

So, although I don't know about any of you newbies that are here now, let me say welcome and if there are things we can do to make you feel at home, please tell us.

Well I have never seen a 'headlined' open letter to any other new member(s) here before, the fact you are drawing attention to the fairly mundane act of someone choosing to join this forum is puzzling given the ebb and flow of handles from one forum to another.

Why would you "need to work" with 3 anonymous individuals who have chosen to join here like so many others have in the past. Why do they need to be worked with? If the known previously problematic scottishguy changes his SGF attitude there will/should be no need for any dramatic headline offers to 'work with' anyone. There is NOTHING "hard to understand" about any of your posts content other than the actual reason for doing it in the first place. Immediatly you have now put three anonymous handles in the spotlight....for what?  Wouldn't a short hello and welcome not have been suffice?

And what 'problems' are you referencing that need to be "solved" you seem to be finding problems where none exist and if everyone sticks by the rules there should be none. But you are of course entitled to air your opinion just as I am.

Quite Michael. As someone who does read other boards I also find it easy to welcome anyone with open arms, however reading other boards allows a little caution to come into play with certain individuals with the type of history which would be at odds with this forum were it repeated here. Nothing wrong with a bit of caution in my opinion.

As a relatively new member, I would have to say to any new members, "Welcome, Bienvenue".

No, I am not going to break into a song now although most forum members know my affinity to music and singing.

Two months ago, I joined the board and found it to be refreshing from the one I used to read.

Then of course, my active participation in the Christmas Quiz.

It was all fun until a certain member started to "harass" me for NO obvious reasons.

It reached my threshold of tolerance.

I quit the board for a couple of weeks after my nemesis evaporated into thin air.

Now back for the second time, I am glad that I am much wiser by ignoring "offending" posts.

In fact some of the older members were so generous and caring that they PM me to disregard those postings.

What I am advocating is "Contribute as often as you can. Tell us, teach us your experience in every and any thing".

I picked up several tips on car rentals in Bangkok here.

So to those who share generously, keep up the good work.

The darn quote feature does not work the way it should.  Why are you playing with semantics.  Saying I will work with them means I will take them like they present themselves and either get along or not.  How is that different then what you are saying.  Gee I can do this too.  You say a degree of caution is necessary, but seem to avoid stating what that means.  Should we put one of them on moderated status, is that what you are stating, or is it just the simple you are willing to work with him.

I am taking it for granted that English is your first language and wonder why you are reading so many ominous things into my trying to be out front before a problem occurs.  These are members who have all left another board and the reason one of them gave points to trouble in the future as one of these people they left to avoid is registered here and has more post then you do.  The capitals in my topic heading have nothing to do with anything, other then I did not notice that my cap lock was on.  Would it have been less alarming if I had not done that by accident.

If nothing else shouldn't these poster be aware that one member they do not like did and can post here, or do you think it is better that they just get surprised.

I don't know who the other poster is, KT and I don't care.

I didn't leave the board on account of the contents of one poster's posts. I felt a group of guys had hijacked the board and I didn't want to be a part of their "fun." I've got no interest in discussing chicken soup, which is one of their latest topics started by one of the group. That's all.

If someone posts here and follows the guidelines, then there should be no problem. And no "blow up."

I haven't de-registered from that board.  I just don't post there any more.

Whilst I appreciate what you are trying to do Khor Torse at the risk of repeating myself please do not deem to speak for me, I have not spoken anywhere about leaving anything, speaking personally I don't do drama and my simply regisitering here is ( to me anyway) no big deal and as I've already said nothing should be read into that by anyone and the fact that three different people all registered here for their own individual reasons is really nothing that this board should feel the need to worry about or discuss any more than any other random person joining.

As has already been mentioned assuming that I ( and the other people I guess) adhere to the rules of this site I really don't see the need for any further discussion re this matter.  And again in the very nicest possible way please don't assume to know my reasons for regisitering here as they may well and do in fact have absolutely nothing to do with ANY one individual poster who may or may not be posting on both boards ( actually I don't even know who you're talking about nor care less). I'm all for a quiet life and having a bit of fun and mutual enjoyment on the various Thailand boards is my aim, simple as that. I'm surmising by your posts that you maybe believe that three people joining all at once was some sort of coreographed move, I can assure you that it wasn't and in fact the three of us weren't even aware the others had also joined until we noticed each others names here after signing up.

So, I do understand your believing (incorrectly) that there may be a need for caution at some level I can assure you (certainly in my case and I'm sure i can also speak for the others in this regard too) there is really no need for undue concern or discussion re this matter further and assuming all board rules are adhered to that should be the end of the matter.

So lets all post or read or whatever it is we do as normal and move on now please as this thread has already raised the subject of three random people subscribing to this board much much more than should ever have been necessary anyway I believe.  Many thanks  - and thank you (all) for the welcome as well by the way !

Yes one chapter ends and another begins.

It is pointless to discuss PAST events, especially when they are seen in less positive light.

Come over and start afresh.. :p

I have seen this often. There is a little light switch at the top of this edit box. Click it and see if that helps.

I just tried it. It's not essential to use it - but it does make it slightly easier, as long as you remember to switch it off before posting!

But I really do not understand why we have to use that light switch at all when it was not necessary before the layout changes were made! Quoting and multi-quoting before then was easy - especially quoting across different threads. Now it's complex - unless everyone knows that they have to use that light switch, and even then quoting across threads doesn't seem to be possible.

And it's clear than not all posters do. I don't mean to be critical; merely to find a way of making basic posting functions easier.

I just used the multiquote and it worked for me. :)

I also can use it with either light switch on or off.

Okay, much better but I really need to try it on a long message where I only want parts of it to quote.

Thanks Michael

Saying I will work with them means I will take them like they present themselves and either get along or not.

That's probably the most logical way to roll with this. Who really cares if folks from a different place join in here or on another forum to participate with a change of handle (or attitude), as long as they can be civil.

My feeling is that while some sites are keen to drive their numbers up for more of a profit when selling it off I don't feel this is one of them.  Since he doesn't have any advertising I'd say Gaybutton isn't beholden to anyone, either. I don't have a problem with his posting frequently on his own board; it's called conversation, and that's what most boards encourage. Some members on other forums post on a dozen threads in a row, too, but so what?

I'm relatively new here myself, but I'm happy to see other new folks. After almost seven years on SGT I decided not to participate there nearly a year ago, should memory serve. I wish it well - always have.

To be fair to the owner of SGT, he keeps the worst offender on a short leash and moderated status.  So far, he has been

a thorn but under control.  It seems his connection to the closed bitchboard was a major issue for many posters and

the owner was a major target of ugly abuse and pure nastiness.

He forgave them so I guess some of us are taking

this a little too seriously.  I do wonder if the owner of SGT made the right decision and I guess time will tell.

But have you tried it across different threads? I can get it to work with more than one quote from one thread, but not across different threads like before. If you can, I must be doing something wrong.
