Guest terrychris Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I dont wish to sound like a "cheap charlie" but do bars give out free condoms via the Take Care Charity? Sometimes I have boys turn up via Gayromeo without condoms,so have to use a packet i have bought from seven eleven , Condoms are not cheap ,45 baht for 3. Now if I off a boy from a bar I ask him if he has condoms with him . Can I ask if you buy your condoms or do you get them free via bars? Does the Take Care charity give out free condoms because im finding boys are not receiving them,or asking for them. Quote
Bob Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I dont wish to sound like a "cheap charlie" Hmmm, I think you failed in that mission. For Christ's sake, buy some condoms, you can get them at any 7/11, Tesco, pharmacy, etc. Quote
Guest Jovianmoon Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Can I ask if you buy your condoms or do you get them free via bars? I don't know whether or not you live in Thailand terrychris, but I don't so I'll give you a tourist's answer to that question: I bring a small supply of Ansell with me from home, bought from a pharmacy for about 12 bucks... Quote
kokopelli Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I bring a small supply of Ansell with me from home, bought from a pharmacy for about 12 bucks... Ok, jovianmoon, what the heck is Ansell? Regarding condoms they are made readily available by Take Care to all the bar boys and their customers, that is their mission. Quote
Guest Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 A few years ago I was buying some condoms in a Pattaya Family Mart & their cute young sales person blushed, pointed to the numbers on the back and said these are too small, you need these. This wasn't guesswork on his part. He knew my requirements quite well, as we had met at Dongtang beach and spent several nights together. Anyhow, considering the shops in Thailand sell a range of condom sizes, it makes sense to buy some that fit. I tend not to see such a range of sizes when people are giving them away. Quote
TMax Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Like Jovianmoon I take a supply of condoms with me, if I run out I just go to the nearest pharmacy. Quote
Guest Jovianmoon Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Ok, jovianmoon, what the heck is Ansell? Oops, sorry - brand name there (obviously not as internationally well-known as I'd assumed). My bad. My comment should have read simply "I bring a small supply of condoms with me from home..." I don't have any reason to believe that condoms dispensed in Thailand are any less effective (though some claim this is the case, without evidence I think), but for me it is just convenient to bring a couple of packets with me since it's not much of an expense or effort in any way. Regarding condoms they are made readily available by Take Care to all the bar boys and their customers, that is their mission. And a damned fine job they are doing, by all accounts. I've got my own though, so I'll leave the free condoms for others who may not have their own and may be embarrassed by a visit to 7-Eleven - or in the case of bar boys, those who may prefer to spend the money on their next meal. Guest timmberty Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 a small supply ?? i dont have any room in my suitcase for any clothes after ive packed in my condoms!!! trouble is i end up taking them all back home. Quote
Guest Jovianmoon Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 a small supply ?? i dont have any room in my suitcase for any clothes after ive packed in my condoms!!!trouble is i end up taking them all back home. Then you're packing too many. Small supply for me - 24. I'm usually in Thailand for about three weeks at a time and still come home with some unused. I don't have sex every day while I'm there. Just my libido I guess. I suppose it depends on how long you spend in Thailand at any one time and how, er, voracious your appetite is. For me, sex in Thailand is only one part of the deal. Diving and snorkelling rates highly, as well as just relaxing and wandering around. Whatever... My colleagues here in Oz still jest with me that I'm a sex tourist though - you only need to admit to one encounter to be called a sex tourist. Not even that - mere suspicion is enough ! Okay - that's probably a good topic for a separate thread. I will conclude by saying that if you cannot fit the condoms you will actually use into a suitcase, you are either a sex maniac and/or you need to buy a bigger suitcase! [suit]case closed! Quote
Guest dale1 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Relative to this discussion of condoms and bar boys in Pattaya .... Dale, speaking of free Condoms. In my home town,Seattle, condoms are free at every bar supplied by the AIDS foundation and I am pretty sure that is true in most major cities across the USA. Have you or take care ever asked people to bring some of these condoms with them to donate to "take care"? Quote
Bob Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Any efforts to promote safe sex, including the efforts of Take Care, certainly deserve praise. I've noticed that the OP, like Elvis, has left the building. Presuming you're still reading the thread, terrychris, I'm wondering if you might respond to a question. You spend $2,000-3,000+ for airflight, hotel/guesthouse, food, alchohol and off fees, etc., and you're complaining about spending $1.50 to buy 3 condoms? And you think you're entitled to get some free condoms from somebody? It's not my business to say who gets the free condoms provided by Take Care and other great charities but, frankly, I'd hope that those free condoms would be used only by those that can't afford the cost of condoms and/or as an incentive to the bar boys to practice safe sex. If any significant percentage of the free condoms are going to falang (read: cheap charlies), I'd be disappointed. KhorTose and ChristianPFC 2 Quote

Guest dale1 Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 KhorTose >>>> thanks for the comment ...... we have had several Friends of TAKE CARE!! load up their suitcases with condoms (and sometime lubricant, as well) when they travel to Pattaya .... these supplies have certainly been a welcome addition to our resources. Currently our Safer Sex Pack are costing about 13 baht each .... this includes two condoms, a lubricant sachet, as well as the cost of packing supplies and the inserted printed material. So, as you can see, each person that brings along a supply of condoms/lub for TAKE CARE!! when visiting Pattaya, helps us stretch our fundraising baht just that much further. Needless to say we encourage and can use all the help we can get. Friends reading this thread who would like to lend a hand in this regard can contact us at our email address <takecarepattaya@yahoo.com> to facilitate the handing over process. TAKE CARE!! Quote

Condoms are very light to bring in quantity to worthwhile groups like this and can be purchased through Amazon or other sources in bulk for very little money... much less than in 12-packs at the pharmacy. At street fairs and other events where condoms are given away I used to talk to the people in the booth, tell them where I'd be taking the supplies and ask if they wanted to make a donation. It's a little like trick-or-treating on Halloween - I'd hold a bag out, and they usually scoop up a handful or two to drop into it. Lately I've just been ordering bulk online to bring. Easier to just donate the money, I suppose, but that's how I've preferred to do it. One trip I dropped off a box of 700+ condoms at the Thais4Life bookstore to help Dr. Philippe, and another time I left a bag of condoms and sachets for Dale at Gaymede the night before a fundraiser, since I was leaving town the next morning. One of these times I'll meet him, I suppose. There are several worthy groups in Thailand who can use such supplies, but Take Care seems to be doing about the best job of stretching a baht. If you are going to bring a bag of condoms with you then I strongly suggest that you leave the bag of Halloween candy at home. Customs have an adversion to the combo of these two. TotallyOz 1 Quote
Guest Echmoth Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Now maybe it's just me but ... Last night a clinic from somewhere in Pattaya delivered boxes of condoms to Sunee Plaza, tonight Swing came round doing the same. Maybe the (now three?) organisations can get together and sort their act out? I'm sure the boys don't need quite so many ... Quote

Guest dale1 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Just a short comment in regards to the number of condoms that are being distributed to the various venues in the Pattaya/Jomtien area. Of course, TAKE CARE!! welcomes collaboration with all organizations involved in condom distribution as an HIV/AIDS prevention method. We certainly do not see it as competition. From an epidemiological stand point, the use of condoms as a method of safer sex must reach a saturation point of 80% before a reversal of the epidemic will be realized. Quote
