we all meet them, the ones who tell you they work for banks, insurance, or whatever earning thousands of dollars a day, they tell you that altho they are on holiday their phone is always on as there is always a deal to be done another million dollars to be earnt ..

then they sit at the bar and empty their pockets onto the bar top ..

along with their keys one old phone from the 1800s and 20 baht in loose change ...

a beer is ordered and drank over the space of 90 minutes .. then the phone goes off .. theres a glint in the eye as your new friend goes outside to answer it .. and altho hes not gone far enough for you not to be able to hear it ..he walks back in telling you hes just done a deal making his company several million dollars ..

even tho to your ears it sounded more like he said .. ill give you 500baht short time and no more !!!

these creatures tend to be quite amusing at first but soon become a drain ...

im sure many of the members of this board must have stories to tell about these bar/beachlovers.??

I can’t quite match your story, but did have an odd encounter about 10 years ago.

I had an early meeting with a client who was staying at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. Chatting near the reception desk, we noticed an elegant, rather elderly man in a light tweed jacket and a small trilby hat trying to pay his bill. He looked quite out of place - as though he had just stepped out of a movie set rather than the lift in a hotel in the tropics.

He presented a credit card. Eventually, the cashier informed him very tactfully that the card was not accepted. In a very posh English accent, he asked her to try again. Same result. This is quite ridiculous, he said. I know I topped up the card before I left so there is plenty of credit. A third time the card was rejected. Do you have any other card, he was asked? No, he replied, he had left them at home.

“Don’t you realise it’s a Coutts Bank card? Of course it will be fine. It’s the Queen’s bank, for goodness sake!” he said, as though that would make any difference.

Unable - or unwilling - to phone the card centre in the UK, he turned to his wife who had appeared and asked her if she remembered him topping up the card account. “Of course you did, darling. I remember it well.”

Eventually, he gave up on the card, opened his carry bag and fished out a wad of tens of thousands of Baht. As we had to leave, we assume he was then relieved a considerable amount of them.

I’d love to know who the guy was and if he was trying to con the hotel. I just can’t imagine anyone else staying at that hotel who did not have a decently high credit limit and actually had to top up a card before taking a vacation – even if he had in fact left other cards at home! So not a bar/beachlover – but definitely not what he seemed!  :fool:

You have to admit that these people must have very deep pockets if they can fit one of these inside:

Oh come now, timmberty, that was unnecessary - we all knew who you were pointing the finger at  :acute:

Some of the elderly people are more familiar with traditional cash payments and don't go around with a folder full of credit cards.

As for holiday bores, well on my first visit to Thailand, I recall sitting outside The Ambiance taking a morning coffee and chatting to someone who managed to tell me how much money he was making and little else. Thankfully most people I meet on holiday are much more interesting to talk to.

To me, a bore is someone who tries to pick a fight without provocation.  They bore me to death. Life is so short that I don't see the need to spend on those I don't like.

When I encounter a bore, I do the easiest thing on earth, I ignore them.  Odd concept ey?

No no, I am so sorry.  I just saw your post and it reminded me of him for some reason.  Perhaps it is your writing style and not your hot off the presses stories. :)

He and I are one. But, since I don't know the he you are referring to, I'll just take the blame for peace sake.  I am me.  Are you you or he? Is he you or me? Are we all the same?

I welcome you and your posts on this board.  I have no issue with that at all.  However, when I see an entire thread dedicated to teasing another member, it just brings back such horrid memories of my youth and those school yard bullies.  Tears are flowing down my cheeks right now just thinking about all the teasing and nastiness.

I agree that you have different points of view. We all do and that is what makes sites like this great.  I did not know you were on SGT.  I honestly do not read the other boards very much unless someone sends me a link to read a thread.  I didn't even know you were on other GT related boards and a known quantity.  However, that is great that you are so knowledgeable about the boards.

You are confusing being bullied, with people bullying a bully for being a bully. Not even in the same ball park.

To coin a phrase, totally agree!

Can you possibly please explain to me how the poster is being a bully? Please.

I agree that it is not in the same ball park. I don't even think we are playing the same sport.

History teaches us a lot of things. One lesson is surely that leaders are often too preoccupied with principles to appreciate the bigger picture and therefore fail to act in time. Had Britain's PM Neville Chamberlain and his colleagues taken the time to consider in more depth the consequences of his appeasement policy, perhaps the Nazis would not have had the same freedom to ride rampant all over Europe and beyond. And with reference to the topic of this thread, perhaps if we simply confronted the bores and told them to bugger off, our holidays would become more enjoyable.

I think you might be referring to me there. My "reprimand" of you pointing the finger at a certain person (who shall remain nameless for fear of bullying accusations) was entirely tongue-in-cheek. I actually found your play on words using 'bar/beach' and a certain poster's name on another board quite amusing. My comment and image about the 1800s telephone was likewise tongue-in-cheek. Sorry it didn't come across that way. Clearly I should have added some wink smilies. Oh, and, please don't infer that I have any association with said nameless person whatsoever. The mere thought gives me the willies. ;)

While I think your analogy of the appeasement of certain annoying posters on this board with the appeasement of Hitler is a little over the top, I agree in principal with your sentiment. No wait, I would agree a little bit more that the particular annoying poster in question might fit Lloyd George's description of Chamberlain: 'a pinhead'. Oops, is that perhaps out of line for the moderators  - even though said poster is not named?

Here's an amusing holiday bore. Imagine sitting next to a passenger and he suddenly tries to grope you one minute and strangle you the next. Or so it happened, according to the Gothamist in this link. They had to restrain him in his seat with duct tape!

http://gothamist.com/2013/01/05/uruly_passenger_groped_and_choked_b.php

Yesterday, a photo of an unruly Icelandair passenger who had to be restrained with duct tape and plastic ties on a flight from Reykjavik to JFK on Thursday spread across the internet faster than a dog driving a power wheel car by himself. Passenger Gudmundur Karl Arthorsson, 46, may not have been arrested, but he did make it to the front cover of the NY Post. And some more details about his drunken antics leading up to the photo have been revealed.
“He drank an entire bottle of hard liquor two to three hours into the flight,” Manhattan resident Andy Ellwood, who posted the photo to his Tumblr, told the Post. Ellwood's friend, who was on the flight, was the one who snapped the picture. Another source said a flight attendant confiscated two liquor bottles after that, but Arthorsson “went into the seat pocket in front of him and began consuming a variety of mini bottles" (including Grand Marnier, whiskey and schnapps).
Then about two hours before the flight landed, police say Arthorsson “became intoxicated, verbally abusive toward the flight crew as well as other passengers.” That's when things got very messy: “He tried to grope and strangle fellow passengers and they said absolutely not,” Ellwood said. He tried to “choke the woman next to him” and was “screaming the plane was going to crash,” other passengers said. “Just think of a typical drunk, when he starts taking fighting poses,” a police source told the Post, adding that Arthorsson appeared to be “completely out of his mind.”

Story mentions that the passenger was not arrested. Amazing! Other passengers wouldn’t come forward to detail his threatening behavior. I think if someone had been trying to strangle me, I would be inclined to do something about it.
