. . . leaving me with 4 full hours to kill.

Dont miss the MEE REBUS at Yong Peng, the final stop before Singapore.

4 hours in Hat Yai! Happened to me a few years ago, marooned there for a few hours en route between Penang and Bkk. I had to change from a bus to the train. I spotted a massage place and nipped in for one. Nice way to 'kill' a few hours to be sure.

What is the Mee Rebus at Yong Peng?

Mee Rebus is a Malay noodle dish.

Please google it and you will find all the information on this yummy dish.

There are some choices in Thailand especially in Bangkok and Pattaya that are not easily available in much of the world.

I refer to serviced apartments which give you much more space then most Hotel rooms but still give you the advantage  of daily cleaning if you wish.

Bangkok is just unbelievable for these types of apartments.  I can stay in the best area in a 700 sq foot apartment with every convenience including washer and dryer for as little as $70 per night and for true luxury up to $150 per night.

And there are also quite a few of these type apartments for even less.  The price varies with whether it is Motel 6 furniture or Four Seasons. Whether breakfast buffet is included  and free wifi in all the rooms.  But in all cases you get anywhere from 2x to 3x the space and the niceties of full kitchen , washer , dryer etc etc.

What you usually give up although not in all cases are palatial Lobbys and onsite Bars and restaurants. I have never stayed at one where there were not a multitude of choices for restaurants and bars within a few blocks.

The best prices are usually found on Agoda or Booking .com.  Big advantage with Booking is rarely do you have to pay in advance where as with Agoda you almost always do.

i must admit i dont get why you would need to book a hotel room if you where going somewhere for a day trip ! the word's DAY TRIP means its a trip taken within a day ...

therefore no hotel is needed ??

p.s. for my next stay in pattaya i will use the mosaik again ..i called them direct to book a room .. which cost £100 less then using agoda ..

this is not a day trip tho.

I think the OP meant to say cheap per day trip rather then a trip of just one day. Since you see early on he refers to bringing the average cost down after you have paid for your transportation on the first day.

yes you are indeed right .. i see i mentioned earlier about a beach boy whos room i went too .. id forgotten till i just re-read it .. he paid 170baht a night it wasnt very nice and not a place id want to live in myself .. but if you want cheap its there ...

i reckon you could live easy on 500 baht a day if need be ..

170 the room

150 3 street meals a day

150 3 big beers from 7/11 other outlets are available

then 30 baht to waste as you see fit ..

see you by the bins.

One question comes to my mind: Why should we be mis-treating ourselves in Thailand (or any part of the world)?

Living cheap does not mean belittling one's standard of living.

No one asks to stay in 5* hotels but for many of us, basic needs must be met.

Lub di

For example, we need to sleep well in SAFE and HYGIENIC places.

A good hostel like some of the better ones in Bangkok are generally inexpensive and clean/safe.

From my limited experience, I had interacted with many handsome younger men.

Sorry just see and no touch.... :hi:

Until you said that I had no idea I was in such agony by not staying at the Pattaya Marriott!

Like the old story about the optimist's twin brother*, you can be happy if your attitude is right. Happy in a hellhole, sad in a palace, depending on your point-of-view. Sometimes a low budget has nothing to do with it. I know farang who could easily afford 5-star hotels every night, but choose not to for a multitude of reasons like this.

Well, that's no fun! But imagination can be interesting at times and just meeting people can be a real turn-on.

BTW, what does Lub di mean?

I agree it should not be a question of the perceived quality or the cost of accommodation. We're all different and we all have to work within budgets. I've stayed in some great guesthouses. Thanks largely to my work - or major discount offers from sites like Travelzoo, I've also stayed in some really good hotels which would normally be way out of my budget.

Often, though, I could not visit a certain country unless I booked into guesthouses. If I ever were to return to Buenos Aires, I would not contemplate staying anywhere other than at the lovely guesthouse run by 2 gay guys I stayed in last time. Everyone was so friendly, I got tips about visiting great places that were not in the main guidebooks, and I enjoyed it much more than if I'd stayed in an impersonal hotel.

As for hostels, I did enough of that in my youth! That was fun, though, especially in the morning as guys lumbered out of their bunks, some sporting very enviable bulges!  :hot:  But like abang, it was "just see and no touch"  :cray:

I can only recall staying in a hostel once.  That was in Berlin & I had a double room with en-suite bathroom.  Having seen how cute some of the other customers were, it was tempting to wander down the corridor to one of the shared shower facilities.

For more recent visits to that city, I've been renting a small apartment via the EBAB website.
