The forecourt outside Q House Lumpini (which has an LH Bank at ground level). The same blue Christmas Tree is there this year!

 

B. 3

Mount Fuji, taken at sunset from the top floor of the New Otani Hotel, Tokyo. Here is the same view in daylight –

The gorgeous Opera Theatre built by the rubber barons in Manaus, 1,000 miles up the Amazon, at the end of the 19th century. The movie was “Fitzcarraldo”. The clue I gave relates to the dome featuring the colours of the Brazilian flag.

(Thaiworthy actually did say if “I ever make it to the Amazon” in the Petra thread. As an unsubtle hint, I mentioned I had been there!)

The city is Budapest where agent Jim Prideaux is shot near the start of the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. (Sorry Michael – it is the Hungarian Parliament Building but you got the wrong movie)

This is the street location of the New Amsterdam Theater and also the name of the “other” musical.

I. Bugs Bunny

The postage stamp was a 32-cent stamp issued in 1997. Eating healthily refers to chewing carrots. Use of a medical term refers to “What’s Up, Doc?” Rhapsodic skills refer to the cartoon featuring Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody”. The Rossini opera is “Barber of Seville” which becomes “Rabbit of Seville”, and the Wagner operas are featured in “What’s Opera Doc?”

USA. The Byodo-in Temple in the ‘Valley of the Temples’ Memorial Park in Oahu, Hawaii. This is an exact replica of a temple of the same name in Kyoto, Japan, but the paint colour is different and the volcanic hill behind can only be Hawaii.

USA. Not sure exactly where, but it is an American Airlines plane (silver livery) and I was en route from DFW to Las Vegas.

 

L. They are all left-handed

It may well be that they have all appeared on the cover of Vogue but I'm sorry I have no way of checking that!

So, quite unexpectedly, we have a 3-way tie for the two prizes. I’ll come to that in a moment. In the meantime, for those who decided not to enter, here is a quick word about finding answers.

 

FINDING ANSWERS

 

if you look at Question Q about skyscrapers, I did stress they were very tall (Clue 1). A quick google search provides a list of the world’s tallest buildings. No. 4 and no. 9 are in Shanghai (Clue 2). Click on either and it is obvious that these are the buildings in the photo (Clue 3). Then google the individual building titles and you note that each has a hotel at the top (Clue 4). Each hotel is a Hyatt which only has one ‘A’. Surely, not that difficult!

 

So, thanks to everyone who took part, and even to those who looked at the questions and just gave up. I enjoyed setting the Quiz. SInce there were only six entries, lessons have been learned. Perhaps champagne is not an ideal prize and long quizzes are not so popular. Whatever, there’ll be another next year.

THE RUN OFF ROUND

 

Only the three joint winners of the previous round can take part – Kokopelli, Abang and Thaiworthy. (I have received no objections to the scoring so far. Results can be amended if I am notified of an objection in the next 24 hours).

 

The rules are simple.

 

1. Only one entry can be made and must be posted on this thread. There are 10 questions and each correct answer gains one point.

 

2. The clock starts as soon as this post appears. The run-off has a closing deadline of 11:00 pm on Saturday 22 December. Please note, though, that this is now against the clock - so the first all-correct answer posted wins the First Prize. The Second Prize will be awarded to the entrant who is the first to get the next highest number of points.

That Q was the one I spent most time on and in the end gave up and just guessed. I even tried the four film directors who'd been on stamps - Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston and Billy Wilder - could any of them sing? didn't look like it, or play the piano? - that neither. On a health kick? No sirree!

He said it came out of left field (Jomtien). I assume from your tone you are upset that I failed to realise that Jomtien was your good self rather than a thought which happened to occur to him on Jomtien Beach. If that's the case, how did you work it out, because that was pretty tough.

It is a real shame I did not make it into the second round as I am 100 percent positive that I know each and every question.

 

As for Jomtien, we live in the same building and when he doesn't hear the pitter patter of Thai boys feet upstairs he begins to worry and wonder if the world is coming to an end. He knew I had trouble with the one answer (now I guess I know it was more than one), so he lent a helping hand. Such a kind man. I can't tell you how he knew as only he knows how to get into his mind frame, but I will share that his impressions of cartoon characters are pretty fucking impressive and that the US Government used him as a counter espionage agent for many years. His partner was Roger Rabbit. Shit. I have said too much.

Ya know, I had this as my first answer but did not have time to get all the movies again. I guess I was just hoping it was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was a great movie and I loved it. I also loved Tinker Tailor and was pretty sure the Hungarian Parliament Building was in the movie but wasn't sure it was in the opening scene. It was a tough question without seeing the movies again but at least I was close.

 

Again, FH, great quiz and some really tough questions. I wish the other 3 gentlemen great luck in the final round! A very impressive group of individuals here on Gay Thailand!

I now have to apologise to all three finalists. About 30 minutes ago I received a request from one of the three that entries be made by pm. This is because with the questions being harder, it becomes much easier for the second/third entrants to crib from the answers of the first/second entrants and consequently seek to verify them. I wrote to all three saying I was now considering this, but abang has posted his entry!

 

SInce abang has been so quick off the mark, I now feel it would be quite wrong to change the rules and will keep them as they stood when first posted last night.
