TotallyOz Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Like most Apple enthusiasts, I enjoyed the new features on the IPhone that was announced yesterday. I did hear that the Sim Card is going to be even smaller than the current one. I remember when they first did this, the local Thai phone people cut the sim card and it worked. Does anyone know if this is going to be possible with the new updates? Does DTAC have any announcements out for the new phones there? I know in October there is to be yet another Apple announcement and that is expected to be an upgrade to the IPad and a new IPad Mini as well as updates to the IMac and Mac Mini lineups. Perfect time right before Xmas so all the buzz can build up. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I doubt if anyone knows what is going to be possible with the iPhone 5 in Thailand until it is actually released. Yes, I have seen them trim the SIM card with that special gadget they have and it does work. If there's a way to do it, the Thais will figure it out. I wish I had gone the DTAC route instead of TRUE. I am not impressed by their customer service, but maybe it's not much different with anybody else. I might buy the Mac Mini, it's been around a while and has a small footprint for a computer. If you want to buy for Christmas, wait till the Friday after Thanksgiving Day. Some of the more popular products go on sale for that one day only. If there is no Apple store near you, buy online. TotallyOz Posted September 14, 2012 Author Posted September 14, 2012 TW, I have purchased over 20 of these Mac Mini's for companies I work with in the USA because it is versatile, fast and pretty amazing. Once they do the upgrade, I have decided that I'll buy one for myself as it really is all I need and very small and easy to transport. Everyone I know what has one likes it. Plus, it is pretty to look at. I have the 27inch IMac and I love it but it is not easy to transport. I have transported it back and forth to Thailand on every trip and it always looks odd. I will be happy when they upgrade the Mac Mini as I'll be moving to that. I did buy the 17inch laptop when they stopped production a few months back and I love it. I had to purchase at Amazon as I could not find any store in Thailand or India that had one in stock. I also added 16G RAM to it even thought Apple recommends 8 as Max. However, all the support staff I work with in LA have the newest laptops and they double the RAM and it does not invalidate the warranty and it makes the speed amazing. I'll be interested to see how the next IPad update is as I hear they may do a smaller version. I don't need that but I look forward to seeing it. Quote
mahjongguy Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Does anyone know if this is going to be possible with the new updates? Yes, a standard SIM and a micro SIM can be trimmed to the size of a nano SIM. There already are video guides on YouTube. It requires a steady hand and a fair amount of precision. We can expect to soon see handheld punches for this purpose, same as the existing punches for making micro SIMs. BUT... The nano SIM is also 15% thinner and there's not much you can do about that. It will take some force to get it into and out of the iPhone and might damage the phone's contacts. TotallyOz 1 Quote
Bob Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Yes, a standard SIM and a micro SIM can be trimmed to the size of a nano SIM. Not all of them can be trimmed to fit. I bought an unlocked Galaxy III about a month ago and just went to the AIS shop here in Chiangmai to get my old 1-2-Call standard sim trimmed to micro-sim size. They couldn't do it - said that my sim card was "too old" (heck, it's only 4-5 years old, maybe). Anyway, no problem.....got a new micro sim and they then somehow electronically transferred my old mobile number along with the prepaid minutes to it in a jiffy. Quote
Guest HeyGay Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I own the Iphone 4s more than happy with that, its so easy to use and I send photos to friends abroad they get it in seconds, unless your a tecky like Michael, I just can see the point for the man in the street to change phones, till a new shape comes on the market, the add ons now. really don’t warrant a change now?
