Those who take part in such activity have to concern themselves not only with HIV; it’s other STD’s like gonorrhea. Once easily treatable with antibiotics if discovered early, the WHO is now warning of - . . . potentially untreatable strains of drug resistant gonorrhea and are calling for more vigilance on the proper treatment of the disease with antibiotics.” The widely spreading “superbug” strains of the sexually transmitted infection are resistant to cephalosporin antibiotics, normally the last line of defense against gonorrhea. Last year scientists reported finding a strain of gonorrhea in Japan in 2008 that was resistant to all recommended antibiotics; at the time, the researchers warned that it could turn the disease into a serious global health issue. Now, WHO reports that drug-resistant strains are popping up in many more countries, including Australia, France, Norway, Sweden and the U.K. Unless doctors catch and treat cases earlier, millions of people may run out of treatment options. “This organism has basically been developing resistance against every medication we’ve thrown at it,” Dr. Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan, a scientist in the WHO’s department of sexually transmitted diseases, told the Associated Press. ”In a couple of years it will have become resistant to every treatment option we have available now.” http://healthland.ti...wide-who-warns/ The WHO estimates there are 106 million new infections annually. Like all viruses, the gonorrhea virus has been adapting so that it is less easy to detect and can survive longer. "Now people with gonorrhea sometimes...only notice the discharge if they look when they pass urine, it's not that painful anymore. I realized that the standard STD blood test that I had all these years does not test for Gonorrhea. Urine n swap test are available but only if u have symptoms n specifically request the tests to be included. What if the infection was not at the urinary tract e.g. oral or rectal, and what if there are no serious symptoms or symptoms like ulcer which are dismissed as nothing serious. Hence, I search for blood test for this STD n it seems it is not common or available around me. Given that Thailand seems to be a one stop professional health care centre, I wonder if anyone know if the hospital in Bangkok has blood testing for this STD. Is it in the standard STD blood test package. If not, how much is the test, if available. Thanks! Quote

I indulged in unprotected sex a good few years ago and also during my first couple of visits to Pats 14 years ago. But I believe I have used all my luck and now I am blessed with fear of the possible consequences. I often wonder about the odds on picking up something nasty in Thailand. 2% maybe with different random partners ?. So given a four week visit by an average gay sex tourist indulging it would be odds on. Quote

So if trying 15 different ones on a holiday, well I'm not going to brush up on my statistics calculations & provide a precise number, but the probability of being with one is a lot higher than 50%. I believe the transmission rate is not 100% for unprotected sex, so that would need to be a factor. Then we have all the other nasty diseases. Using protection makes sense. Quote

I also feel of having used my supply of good luck in this last decade where I have been more sexually active than earlier in life. I would be more optimistic about my chances in a place where every HIV+ person is treated with antivirals, since this significantly reduces the risk of infection. But I know nothing about how people in Thailand learn about their HIV status and how they handle it. As for the other STDs (more relevant for me since anal sex is not my forte) I am concerned about the new antibiotic resistant bugs. I won't swear that I give up all sex with strangers. I also see limits on how much trouble I will take with "protection". But I will limit casual sex to a minimum, maybe only when everything comes together 100%. Just to know that I'm still good at it This is what I already can do with all the junk food I love. Quote
