Guest fountainhall Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 We've had this topic several times before, but I cannot find the old threads. So I'm starting a new one. Saw this when I checked in this morning - "I am a Thai guy. I am not a butterfly but I want to know every body in the world. Waiting for you." Well, I guess that's a new description for butterfly! Quote
Rogie Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Well, I guess that's a new description for butterfly! This is my favourite description of a butterfly and it comes from Elton John's Someone Saved my Life Tonight: And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear You almost had your hooks in me didn't you dear You nearly had me roped and tied Altar-bound, hypnotized Sweet freedom whispered in my ear You're a butterfly And butterflies are free to fly Fly away, high away, bye bye I thought he was looking good on Saturday night at the Queen's Jubille concert in front of Buckingham Palace. He sang Crocodile Rock. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 It is certainly an accurate description, Rogie. However, I despise the verse and what it stands for. If you want to leave a relationship because that person is totally wrong for you, perhaps having discovered something about them that is unsettling seems fair to me. But the lyrics describe one said person's rather insensitive view of self and a loathing of being in any relationship. Personally I do not admire the butterfly, but don't condemn him. After all, in this verse particularly, hooks, roped and tied, altar-bound and hypnotized all convey being the object of a very possessive person. This might describe some straight women in search of a husband. While the victim is compared to a butterfly, he seems more like a moth to me who comes too close to the light and barely escapes. In my mind, among gay people particularly it seems, some just want new experiences and want to avoid the hassle of "chain-bound" relationships. More so, evading capture so one can happily satiate himself in blissful, promiscuous wanderlust holds no virtue, in my opinion. I hope never to be a butterfly, or a moth, and would be terribly depressed if it ever came to that. Butterflies please fly away and say bye bye. Quote
Rogie Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Butterflies please fly away and say bye bye. It seems a shame really to drag butterflies into this in the first place. Unless it is the delicacy and perceived fragility of their wings that strikes a chord with people, any winged creature could fill that role, even a pterodactyl. The role we are speaking about is freedom. Freedom being the opposite of commitment. So how about Thaiworthy and myself when referring to anybody formerly known as a butterfly now using the term terror-dactyl? Visions of talons and a sharp beak may serve to strip away any romantic illusions use of the former word butterfly implied. Back to the Elton John song, Someone Saved my Life Tonight: I have no strong feelings either way about Bernie Taupin's lyrics in this song. After seeing Elton singing at the Jubilee concert I started humming a few of his back catalogue and that one was the one that stuck in my mind, so when FH's post appeared mentioning butterflies it seemed an interesting coincidence. ChristianPFC Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 One has to keep in mind that some of the comments are generated by automatic translation or by people with limited knowledge of English. The Thai word for butterfly (the animal) is ผีเสื้อ which literally means "a ghost with clothes". I thought longtime that this is used for a promiscuous person as well (seems kind of logic to me, the animal flies from flower to flower and the person flies from boy to boy), but then I learned that butterfly (promiscuous person) is เจ้าชู้ (literally: person who often changes his sexual partner). Guest fountainhall Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Sorry to bring up an old thread but it seems a waste to start a new one. Has anyone noticed that a lot of the guys who are now signing on to gay romeo state their ages as 43 - yet they are clearly in their 20s? In 5 pages this morning, 12 such guys with photos are 43. 9 are without photos and so it's impossible to know how accurate their claimed ages are. I can't believe all these Thai guys are doctoring their photos to look up to 20 years younger! What's the magic about 43, I wonder? Quote
Guest Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I can't believe all these Thai guys are doctoring their photos to look up to 20 years younger! What's the magic about 43, I wonder? I don't get that. I could understand 45, considering when people state the age range they are looking for, 18~45 is one of the age ranges that crops up frequently. People who include over 45s quite often set the upper limit as 60, 70 or more. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Today there are 7 new members allegedly aged 43. Oddly, all complete only the 'Language' and 'Body and Ethics' questions. The rest of the profiles are blank, whether with or without photos. Could it be some form of flooding using stolen photos? Quote
Guest timmberty Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 i tend to look for ages between 18 and 30 .. so if it says 43 i wouldnt even click on the link .. i dont get why people leave poems etc in guest books .. most annoying .. does a 60 or 70 year old have to be so childish ? leave a poem that the owner of the guest book would probably not even understand !!! Guest Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Today there are 7 new members allegedly aged 43. Well, if these all are in a similar area AND the numbers are significantly above the number of 41 and 44 year old new members, how about reporting the suspicious activity to Gay Romeo? Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I'm not sure altering your age up or down can be regarded as 'suspicious'. I know several people in their 50s/60s who happily lop off anything from 5 - 10 years from their real age. If guys want to add up to 20 years, they are surely only doing a disservice to themselves. As timmberty says, a lot of readers may not even bother to check the full profiles. I am merely curious why they are doing this and why it seems to be becoming more common. Quote

I have yet to figure this out as well. If you are looking for a hook up, and you make a date, don't you think your "date" will find out at the door? Why fib or lie? Quote
