kokopelli Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 First of all, I love Pumpkin's avatar. Good job. Secondly Koko was thinking a more sexy avatar but maybe after his election for President. What do you think? Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 I don't like red because yes, it is a danger signal. No doubt understandably, I fear you are confusing western and Asian concepts, and perhaps a quick drink is not sufficient to see through anyone’s surface veneer. I may not be Chinese, but my Chinese friends in Hong Kong are all convinced I was a Chinese in a previous life. Perhaps it’s time I tried to explore that part of my history! In fact red is extremely common and auspicious in Chinese culture. A bride’s traditional wedding outfit is red. At the lunar New Year, young people receive lucky “red packets” from their elders as tokens of good luck and prosperity. Red wards off evil. It is used to signify celebrations and happiness, and often success, loyalty and bravery. Red is also the colour of fire, the only colour to give one heat, and the one that provides light to drive away the darkness of the night! I appreciate that the mask is very different from the previous avatar. But that was certainly not me! Indeed, I have no idea who it was. My torso never looked like that avatar photo – alas! So what, I wonder, is wrong with replacing one visual fiction with another? Let me assure you I am definitely not broadcasting dangerous signals! I am no Joker; but then neither am I what you make me out to be (but thanks anyway)! Do remember, we are often not what we seem to be, especially on first meeting. I may not wear a Beijing Opera mask, but I have more than once been described as chameleon-like. Indeed, throughout my career I have lost track of the number of times I had to tell my political and other masters what they wanted to hear with a smile on my face – despite my wanting to stab them in the back! Which of course brings us to red being also the colour of the blood – without which none of us could not exist Incidentally, I like pumpkin's avatar! Quote
Guest Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Amusing, scary, appropriate, sexy, they're all there.... Even Thaiworthy has selected something from the horror show now. Should I ditch the budgie smuggling Asian guy & replace him with another scary pic? Got to try & fit in... Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Those are pretty scary, Z. The only thing scarier would be a real picture of yours truly. I'm only going to keep Hannibal until Fountainhall changes his or a week goes by, whichever occurs first. And if we all did that, it would really put on the pressure. Or mebbe not. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I'm only going to keep Hannibal until Fountainhall changes his or a week goes by, whichever occurs first Or until either Orion Pictures or Sir Anthony Hopkins sue you for use of copyright material. perhaps??? I don't know why people find the Chinese Opera mark scary. It isn't, and isn't meant to be! It's artistic and full of Asian significance Quote
Guest Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Maybe it's not meant to be scary, but it is. I'm only going to keep Hannibal until Fountainhall changes his or a week goes by, whichever occurs first. And if we all did that, it would really put on the pressure. Think it may be necessary to stick it out for more than a week. I'm just looking for a suitable picture for my attempt to join the loud & not very gay avatar campaign. Perhaps something showing the the aftermath of a crazed axe murder ? Quote
Rogie Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Perhaps something showing the the aftermath of a crazed axe murder ? Short on ideas? How about this? #7 Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 z - I've even done some research for you I think #3 is quite fetching Quote
Guest xiandarkthorne Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Actually Fountainhall's mask avatar isn't quite red. It's more pink, albeit a somewhat rosier pink. It's almost the exact same colour as the giant tortoise buns we Chinese offer to the gods at certain festivals. Luckily he didn't choose the yellow one beside the pink one. I think that would have made him semi-divine at the very least, if I recall the colour associations correctly. Quote

SInce that breed are all dead, I'd rather not be a ghost But I am not sure what the colour represents in masks. Xian - do those buns have fillings, or are they just like the bread buns you get in northern Beijing cuisine? I love the cha siu bau - barbequed pork filled buns - in Cantonese dim sum. I could eat half a dozen any time! Quote

Is that what your friends meant about you having been a Chinese in a previous life? That would make it mandatory for you to wear bright yellow every day! Xian - do those buns have fillings, or are they just like the bread buns you get in northern Beijing cuisine? I love the cha siu bau - barbequed pork filled buns - in Cantonese dim sum. I could eat half a dozen any time! I am afraid these buns are just plain bread ones. The right way to eat them is with roast pork, preferably fatty roasted pork with lots of crispy crackling. Most people also eat them with lots of salted butter after re-steaming them the next morning, as they don't keep for more than a day or two (no preservatives). I know what you mean about the barbecued pork buns. I stuff my face with them regularly, whether they're baked or steamed. Hey! Maybe I should use a picture of those as my avatar every time I go on a depression eating binge and put on weight! Quote

Doesn't it depend in part on how good or otherwise you were? I'm actually surprised I came back at all, when I consider the tricks I'm sure I got up to with all those gorgeous young Chinese men in the Forbidden City Perhaps I was supposed to be a buffalo but somehow things got a bit mixed up!! Guest Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 How long are we going to continue this tasteless avatar campaign for? First impressions are shocking. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 How long are we going to continue this tasteless avatar campaign for? First impressions are shocking. I agree. I am totally shocked. The ends of my split hairs have been arcing all week. This is me: http://youtu.be/xLlOjWmFaS4 Quote

Guest Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Good to see the traditional Fountainhall avatar has been restored. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Haha! I have been experimenting with others, but it's so difficult to find an image that is relatively clear at such a small size. I looked at this one from the Taipei Parade, but thought it would attract too many comments! Quote
KhorTose Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Thank heavens, now I don't have to use my sunglasses to read this site anymore. Quote
Rogie Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Time for our vegetarian khun Hannibal to go too? Quote
Guest Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I looked at this one from the Taipei Parade, but thought it would attract too many comments! You're right there..... That's superb avatar material, PLEASE use it . Let's see what Thaiworthy comes up with...... Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Fountainhall's old avatar has returned, so therefore so shall mine. At last, peace and harmony have returned to the Universe once again. Quote
Rogie Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 peace and harmony have returned to the Universe once again. Yes This is the 49th post in the avatar thread so here is an apt tribute: The International Peace Garden is located at the border between Manitoba and North Dakota, about midway between the nearby communities of Boissevain, Manitoba and Dunseith, North Dakota. It has as its focal point the Peace Tower (actually four identical monuments 120 feet (36.6 m) tall set parallel only a few feet apart, two on each side of the border, giving the appearance of a double tower from most vantage points in the Garden). Source: wikipedia I assume the significance is clear to our north American readers! Quote
kokopelli Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 I just noticed the topic of the post by Pumpkin was Avator, not Avatar; maybe someone noticed earlier but too lazy to read through all the replies generated by Pumpkin. Quote
