A Macabre and Horrific Gay Murder

It doesn’t seem like 21 years ago. Yet the image conjured by that episode remains seared in my mind.

In May 1991, police in Milwaukee answered a 911 call. They found a slight, mid-teens boy in an alley, screaming in a foreign language, naked and bleeding. The white man calmly following him explained that the boy was his young lover and that they had had a quarrel.

Police transcripts reveal what happened next. The officers joked and laughed about the incident with the dispatcher: “Intoxicated Asian, naked male . . . It is all taken care of . . .” They made discriminatory comments about homosexuals: “it's a boyfriend-boyfriend thing."

They failed to check the boy's ID. They failed to note the drill holes in his head. Instead, they led the terrified 14-year old boy back to the amiable young man’s apartment – and to his death.

The boy was Konerak Sinthasomphone from Laos. The adult was Jeffrey Dahmer. Three years earlier, Dahmer had been convicted of molesting Konerak’s younger brother. On re-entering Dahmer’s apartment, Konerak was strangled, his body abused, photographed, dismembered, parts of it eaten, and the skull kept as a trophy.

Another omission of the police that dreadful May evening was in not investigating the pronounced smell emanating from Dahmer’s apartment. For Konerak was not his only victim. He was the 13^th. All the others were boys or young men, parts of whose bodies had also been eaten and others kept as souvenirs. In all, Dahmer succeeded in killing four more victims until his eventual discovery two months later. He was sentenced to a minimum of 936 years in prison. After serving six years, another inmate murdered him.

The story of Jeffrey Dahmer and young Konerak came to my mind as soon as I saw the news stories this week. Not so far from Milwaukee, Montreal has been the scene of another gruesome gay murder, although this time not involving underage boys. The story is equally intriguing, equally horrifying, and another example of warning signs not being acted upon.

Last Tuesday, a human torso was found in a suitcase left for garbage collection outside a Montreal apartment. That same day, a severed foot was discovered in a parcel mailed to the political Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa. Later, at a postal warehouse, a human hand was found inside a package addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada. A link was soon made between the three body parts.

Jun Lin from Wuhan in China was a 33-year old student of engineering and computer science at Concordia University. In his spare time, he worked ten hours a week at a convenience store. According to the store owner, he had never missed a shift since starting to work there. Yet, on May 25 he failed to turn up for work. He was finally reported missing on May 29. Soon reports were appearing of a video on the internet titled ,“1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick”. This showed –

a man tied to a bed frame being hacked with a kitchen knife and the ice pick. The victim’s throat is then slashed and he is stabbed before being decapitated and dismembered. The killer also appears to eat some of the flesh.

Police now believe that Lin had started some form of gay relationship with Canadian citizen, 29 year old Luka Rocco Magnotta. It was outside Magnotta’s apartment that the torso was found. Inside, police found bloodstains. They believe now that Lin was the victim. On May 28, Magnotta is thought to have left Canada on a flight to Paris and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the meantime, the world is starting to learn a great deal about a man who has all the hallmarks of a monster, destined to join that pantheon of psychopaths best exemplified by the fictional Hannibal Lecter and the all-too-real Jeffrey Dahmer.

Gay, a one-time porn star and escort, a decade ago Magnotta had dated a transsexual who claimed they met at a strip club, but the relationship lasted only three weeks because Magnotta was so unstable he would pick fights in the street. As his jigsaw is being pieced together, it is clear that he is a man who craved attention and laid several clues along the way.

Six months ago, Magnotta visited Britain on a sightseeing trip. Whilst there, police became aware of an internet video showing a live kitten being fed to a python. Confronted by journalists, he supposedly said, “You will be hearing from me again. This time, however, the victims won’t be small animals.”

As the search for Magnotta goes on, it has been revealed that he also uses two other names – Eric Clapton Newman and Vladimir Romanov. An attractive looking man, it is also suggested that he may be travelling disguised as a woman. A warrant is out for his arrest for first degree murder. He is on Interpol’s Most Wanted list.

Whilst Magnotta’s alleged crime seems similar in many ways to those of Dahmer, we do not yet know if it is a single incident or the tip of an iceberg. What we do know is that Magnotta seemed to crave attention, whereas Dahmer was a recluse. Yet, Magnotta’s very visibility and background failed to alert police and the authorities that something might not be quite right. In that sense, sadly this case has some similarities to that of Dahmer and young Konerak.

And what of the officers whose indifference and failure to follow procedures had condemned young Konerak to his gruesome death?

Citizens complained that Dahmer escaped detection because police made investigating disappearances of homosexuals and racial minorities a low priority. The three cops who returned young Sinthasomphone to Dahmer were terminated from the Milwaukee Police Department. After they appealed their termination they were reinstated with back pay. They were honored as "officers of the year" by the police union for a "righteous" battle to reclaim their jobs.

Wow. Good work, Fountainhall. I wish you were investigating this. (I would like to think Fountainhall always gets his man.) When I read about things like this, it makes me very sad to think that people could do such things. When one murderer is caught, it seems like another one steps in to take his place and so on. I hope this person is apprehended soon. He must surely know he will eventually be caught. And sadly, considering the ego that accompanies his depraved behavior he is probably thinking ahead to books and movie deals! He has already made a career from a sordid lifestyle. But these are the times in which we live. A personality like that thrives on attention. The most appropriate punishment of all then, along with a long prison term, is a destiny of absent media attention. But that will not happen. The more bizarre these cases are, the more notoriety it gets and the more profit there is to be exploited. The next victim will be another chapter in a book, and I doubt any victims shall live to tell their story.

The international manhunt for Luka Magnotta appears to be over. German police have arrested a man whom they believe to be Magnotta in an internet café in Berlin.

It also now seems police believe Luka Magnotta may well have killed before. They plan to launch an investigation into all unsolved murders now that he has been formally arrested.

Detectives hunting alleged 'cannibal killer' Luka Magnotta will investigate whether he has committed other murders in the past.

Montreal Police Cmdr Ian Lafreniere said when gay porn star Magnotta is caught, they will launch a review of all cold cases and unsolved murders.

I do think he wanted to be caught. Given his behavior and ego, this reminds me of the character played by Kevin Spacey in the movie, Seven, the story of a sadistic serial killer, looking for fame, and whose basic motive is go down in history books to be studied and analyzed for generations to come. Magnotta may not play as dramatically in real life as the character in the film, but I do see some similarities.

"You got me," he said as he was apprehended. This admission is a little too obvious, I think.

Well surprise surprise, look who's taking the credit for this crazy caper's denouement . . .

The video, titled “1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick” and posted on the Best Gore website last week, shows a naked man tied to a bed in a dimly lit room with a poster of the movieCasablanca on the wall behind it. Another man wearing a dark hoodie begins stabbing the individual and a series of edits show the body eventually dismembered.

There were reports Tuesday out of Montreal that police are investigating the site with an eye to laying charges. There are provisions in the Criminal Code that deal with obscenity.

But in an email to The Canadian Press, site operator Mark Marek said he removed the video the day that police publicly identified Magnotta as a suspect.

“Up to this point, the police have not made contact with me. I removed the video on my own terms, not on the request by the police,” he wrote.

Marek has said he originally thought the video was a bad joke and could have been made by someone with access to dead bodies.

He said this case has turned his life into one “big media jamboree,” but isn’t making any apologies for his website or posting the video. I don’t seek controversy out. I may point fingers at it but I’m merely a messenger, a bringer of truth, regardless of how controversial,” he wrote.

I looked at that site. It's utterly disgusting! If it did not exist, perhaps some of the crazies out there would not be encouraged to enact their evil deeds. As for the site owner's defence, it's akin to the owner of a child porn site saying he does it to show others how disgusting it is! Just try persuading a jury of that one!

In post #7 I listed the topics that were included on that site, and Fountainhall has reported his disgust.

Either this is a different site, the one showing the obese young man and the couple with emo hairstyles, or there is a mixture of harmless and toxic stuff.

Maybe the toxic stuff is hidden away and you have to give them your credit card number in order to access it. Lots of sites do that, give you the old come on and then hit you for the dosh.

Rogie, I think Khun Fountainhill is referring to the Best Gore website that you mentioned in your post; if so (and, yes, I realize you weren't promoting it at all), I'd have to agree that the Best Gore website is beyond disgusting. There's no legitimate purpose in posting graphic photos of deaths, etc., and one would have to wonder about the mental health of those that post such stuff and/or the viewers that might get off on it.

The chair is described as "a rather unimpressive office chair, but one that is guaranteed to be an unbeatable 'conversation piece' in your home".

It was posted on Friday night and had received 36 bids - the highest for 1,111 euros, before eBay shut it down on Sunday.

I had not heard much about people eating human flesh since the Jeffrey Dahmer case - until the Magnotta one. But others are popping up. I came across some horrible photos in one of the UK tabloids just a couple of days ago about a crazed naked guy in Miami attacking a homeless man. I'll not post the site, but if you want to read more just google "Miami cannibal". Be warned, though! The photos are disgusting.

Whilst there is always likely to be a copy-cat element in some instances of weird crimes, so perhaps cannabilism might appeal to a few disturbed people, and of course if there is a whiff of glamour (not a nice word to use but it seems Magnotta, or Newman to use his real name, courted it), and notoriety to be gained by indulging in it that might influence some people.

My guess would be cannibilism is no more common now than it has been in the past. Every generation has its strange people, acting outside the box. If you are going to do that sort of thing, as has already been mentioned, you probably want to be discovered. Perhaps the police files at Scotland Yard or indeed any country's police force going back to the 19th century contain a few grisly murders the fine details of which were kept hidden to protect people's sensibilities. The difference now is it's so much easier for the murderer to self-publicise and the media lust after variety so much they will go to extraordinary lengths to satisfy the craving they conveniently asume WE are guilty of! The police don't get much of a look-in in that kind of situation.

Seriously, their food is quite good from what I remember, and the franchise is operating under a different command. The real thing to worry about is the health aspect, all that cholesterol and fat. I'm pretty sure no one wants me to get on my soapbox to talk about that. While heteroburgers are a misnomer, I used to have pretty funny ideas when I saw a carton of milk with the big letters spelling HOMO. My God! That's why I'm gay I thought as a child, I've been drinking too much HOMO milk! Little did I realize that meant homogenized. Thank God, it wasn't lactating lesbians. To this day, it still brings a giggle.

Now that you have mentioned it, I do remember this one. But I don't recall if the deed was actually done before he was arrested.

Here's a report from Britain's Guardian newspaper from December 2003:

To the family next door, Armin Meiwes seemed the perfect neighbour. He mowed their lawn, repaired their car and even invited them round for dinner.

Other residents in the small German town of Rotenburg also believed there was nothing odd about the 42-year-old computer expert, whose light burned late into the night inside his creaking mansion. Yesterday, however, Meiwes appeared in court charged with killing - and then frying and eating - another man.

In one of the most extraordinary trials in German criminal history, the self-confessed cannibal admitted that he had met a 43-year-old Berlin engineer, Bernd Brandes, after advertising on the internet, and had chopped him up and eaten him.

It was, he said, something he had wanted to do for a long time. "I always had the fantasy and in the end I fulfilled it," Meiwes told the court on the first day of his trial for murder in the nearby city of Kassel.

Yesterday German prosecutors described how Meiwes had fantasised about killing and devouring someone, including his classmates, from the age of eight.

The desire grew stronger after the death of his mother in 1999, prosecutor Marcus Köhler said.

In March 2001 Meiwes advertised on the internet for a "young well-built man, who wanted to be eaten". Brandes replied.

On the evening of March 9, the two men went up to the bedroom in Meiwes' rambling timbered farmhouse. Mr Brandes swallowed 20 sleeping tablets and half a bottle of schnapps before Meiwes cut off Brandes' penis, with his agreement, and fried it for both of them to eat.

Brandes - by this stage bleeding heavily - then took a bath, while Meiwes read a Star Trek novel.

In the early hours of the morning, he finished off his victim by stabbing him in the neck with a large kitchen knife, kissing him first.

The cannibal then chopped Mr Brandes into pieces and put several bits of him in his freezer, next to a takeaway pizza, and buried the skull in his garden.

Over the next few weeks, he defrosted and cooked parts of Mr Brandes in olive oil and garlic, eventually consuming 20kg of human flesh before police finally turned up at his door.

"With every bite, my memory of him grew stronger," he said.

Behind bars, Meiwes told detectives that he had consumed his victim with a bottle of South African red wine, had got out his best cutlery and decorated his dinner table with candles. He tasted of pork, he added.

I suppose we should not be surprised that to the rest of the world, the people who harbour such desires are usually the 'boy next door' types. At the service for the Miami cannibal, he was described as "a loving relative, a close friend" and "a boy who aspired to be the best . . . a man who was focused on enjoying his piece of the American dream."

With regard to my earlier comment about cannibilism and sex, Colin Wilson in his book 'A Criminal History oI Mankind' mentions a rather strange account of what is alleged to happen;

In a book called The Beginning Was the End written in 1971, a Hungarian anthropologist called Oscar Maerth comes up with a theory whose starting poin tis the evidence for widespread cannibilism among our ancestors. Wilson wrote: "Basing his theory on his study of modern head-hunters in Borneo, Sumatra and New Guinea, Maerth argues that the eating of human brains stimulates intelligence and increases sexual excitability. He points out that in parts of Asia, fresh ape brain is still regarded as a delicacy, and can be bought in restaurants. The animal is killed immediately before the meal , and its brains are eaten raw". Maerth says:

According to my own experience, about twenty hours after such a repast there is a feeling of warmth in the brain, like a gentle pressure. After about 28 hours the body is flooded with vitality, with increased sexual impulses

Wilson goes on: "Early man ate the brains of his enemies - perhaps believing he could absorb his courage and other virtues - and discovered it made him more intelligent. It also caused him to become obsessed with sex, and removed the animal inhibitions against having sex when the female was not in season".

As far as I am aware Maerth's theory is unproven. It all sounds a bit far-fetched to me, but bear in mind what the German cannibal said happened to him after eating the other man - he spoke good English, and afterwards he noticed an improvement in his abilities. Believe it or not, it is a very difficult theory to disprove!

When I moved to Hong Kong in 1979, it was not uncommon to hear tales of restaurants in Guangdong Province where 'live' monkey brains were on the menu. Like a number of 'exotic' dishes, including the members of various animals, this was all in the name of improved sexual prowess. There's even a penis and testicle restaurant in Beijing -

A visit to the Guolizhuang Restaurant in Beijing is not for the faint-hearted. Here the menu consists almost entirely of penis and testicle dishes -- made from the private parts of deer, snakes, yaks, horses, seals and ducks, among others.

The platters have names like "The Essence of the Golden Buddha," "Phoenix Rising," "Jasmine Flowers with 1,000 Layers" and "Look for the Treasure in the Desert Sand." Are such flowery names meant to prevent guests from prematurely running off? After all, the "jasmine flowers" are made of layers of thinly sliced donkey penis, and the "treasure in the desert" is actually sheep gonads on a bed of curry.

"Chinese eat anything with four legs, except tables. And everything that flies, except airplanes," says Zhaoran, quoting a well-known Chinese saying.

A Swiss politician has been accused of advertising for cannibals to kill and eat the mother and daughter of a policeman friend going through a ‘tricky’ divorce.

Hans Ulrich Rudel, a convicted murderer, allegedly sought a ‘sadistic master or butcher who can educate us mindless creatures.’

Rudel, 53, is said to have placed the German language ad in the names of his best friend's wife, Patricia Joachim, 27, and her 12-year-old daughter.

It added: ‘We are keen to meet gentlemen interested in slaughter and dolce who would like to roast us on a spit.’

Rudel, a founder of a local conservative party, later told police that ‘dolce’ – the Italian word for ‘sweet’ - was his term for cannibalism.

Previously, he had served a decade in jail for the ritualistic killing of a young woman in 1988 - he shot her and then impaled her body on a tree branch.

Both he and Joachim – his co-founder of a branch of the Swiss conservative party BDP in Embrachertal - were members of a sado-masochistic club.

Rudel, who worked in the town planning office, was known as ‘Marquis el Diablo’ who specialised in spanking, whippings and ‘hot wax’ torture.

Rudel, who goes on trial tomorrow, told police after his arrest in 2010 that he posted the ad in the hope that someone ‘would get the wife out of the way.’
