Z, I have know many of those "straight" males and they say they are straight and they will do with ladyboys but they will occasionally go with fem boys as well. IMHO, they are not straight. They are only afraid to term themselves as straight.

Here in many countries in Asia, cultural values and social mores dictate that a lot of gay guys are seemingly 'straight'. In Japan recently I had an amazing time with a Japanese guy. Only at the end of a very heavy session did we exchange a few pleasantries. He did not have a boyfriend, he told me. Eventually, he admitted he was married with two young kids! One evening a week he'd hit the sauna and try to meet as many gaijin as possible! He said he was bisexual - but I have serious doubts about that!

PS: I have had a PM from a poster who suggests - nicely - that my comments about the ladyboy site were over the top. Fair enough! That's his opinion. All I'll add is that a Message Board is not a Photo site. Yes, photos are often used to illustrate points made in the text, often amusingly. I also believe they are invaluable on travel-related posts. After all, what's the point of having lengthy descriptions of interesting places if you can not see what is being described?

 

But a very long string of posts only containing 420+ photos of the same ladyboys from one bar is vastly over the top and should, in my opinion, have been stopped by the moderators long before it was. For those who disagree, name me any other gay Thailand Message Board site which has ever had more than a few dozen photos illustrating any one thread. I'll even spread it further - name me ANY such Message Board that is not dedicated to photographic material.

The ladyboy message boards do this all the time. Their photo threads are not only popular but what keeps the boards going and doing well. That segment of the market loves to look at the photos and I have seen threads longer than the one you mentioned.

I did go back to that Obsessions thread and looked up a site Astrrro mentioned - www.ladyboyreview.com. In a forum titled “The Ladyboy Scene in Thailand”, there is a poll thread “Best LB bar in Pattaya”. Goodness! I had no idea there are so many! In its 35 posts, there was precisely one photo.

 

And interestingly – at least to me – Obsessions is ranked equal bottom of the 12 bars which received votes! That thread has run from 20 December 2010 to 7 April 2012. Now might perhaps that be one reason why this Board was flooded with pics of Obsessions bar? Mere speculation, I agree!

I can't even read the Message Board parts. I will therefore concede defeat on this part of the argument! However, with a little sting in the tail!! I'll close my comments on this thread with the suggestion that you are perhaps not comparing like with like, since anyone can at least read the messages (if not always see the pics) on gt.com

 

Like others, I too would like to see more go-go boy pics. It seems the boys are far more shy when it comes to pics than the gals - even on their own bar websites. There was a discussion on another site recently where the owner of Eros bar in Pattaya said he could not persuade some of the boys to have their pics on the website!

I think it may be more a feeling of not knowing the Internet. The boys I know in Brazil (straight as well) do not mind being photographed often and put on sites. Not sure why the Thai boys are so different.

I can't say I know any of the bar boys other than casually. But in the last few years I have got to know one guy who used to work as a waiter in one of Bangkok's best restaurants. Not only is he hugely handsome, he is a really nice guy. Since I went a lot to the restaurant for their inexpensive set lunch and he used to live quite close to me, he eventually started coming round after finishing at night - for several glasses of wine and something to eat! I love his company, not only because it's wonderful having such a good-looking guy on the sofa with me, but also because he is very, very funny! We have great times. Sometimes he'll stay over, but only on the sofa bed - never in mine.

 

Whilst sex has very occasionally been on the agenda, mostly it is not. He is terrified of any of his work colleagues knowing that he might have been with another guy, especially a farang. So we meet on my turf. On the one occasion I met one of his friends, I was aware I had to tread carefully - but he begged me to say nothing other than we'd met at his restaurant.

 

Of the rest of his life, I know nothing, except the name of his home town. I don't know if he is basically gay or straight - and I don't think he knows either. But like many Thai guys, he is very conservative in his approach to life.

 

I mention this because, however open and accepting many bar boys seem, I am sure a large number would be horrified if their families and even some friends were aware of what they do for a living. In my view, it is this largely conservative streak that prevents many bar boys being more open to personal publicity.

Some bar boys are quite happy to be photographed & others do not like it. Trying another sample of people, searching the 18~30 age range in Pattaya on GayRomeo, there were 30 entries on the first page of results and 18 had photos including their faces. I wouldn't be surprised if a similar ratio of bar boys were prepared to be photographed. Of course, some who are photographed request their photos are not shared on the internet.

 

I would imagine the resistance would be because they don't want everyone to know what they do for a living. That would be the same in many countries.

If there's a very hands off moderating style valid factual & interesting threads are often swiftly taken off topic. For example a thread may be started asking "where are the gay bars in Hat Yai?"

Such information is not widely available, so when someone swiftly takes the thread off topic with abuse, a sequence of negative posts or even witty banter, that's very unhelpful for the readers.

The "This is a Suck Ass Site" thread can go off topic down whatever avenue it likes as far as I'm concerned, as the original topic is not factual. Now if someone asks for information on some more obscure topic, such as the gay scene in Hat Yai, I think it's important to keep the thread on topic so relevant information can be shared.
